Well the handle coatings on my favorite pair of Klein pliers is coming apart. Instead of being very comfortable, they now hurt to use. Before I start
wrapping em with gaff tape, thought I'd ask what everyone else has had success with? I guess an new pair is not out of the question as the current
ones lasted 30+ years.

Knipex, they have multiple choices for grip style/metal finish and reasonably priced.

The only thing that really works and holds up as a replacement grip is a very thick, high quality heat shrink. There used to be replacement grips available from various brands but I don't really know of any anymore.

Will those handles work with other brands? I bought some pliers from another brand, and while the grips are visually very sharp, they somehow have less friction than bare metal.

Must depend on the store, or maybe on the employee. Are thirty year old grips covered?

I warrantied a pair of pliers with Journeyman grips that failed prematurely at HD.
The young girl helping me pointed to the forging marks just above the grips and said they weren't the same, assuming that was the part number and was going to decline warranty. That was a first. Needless to say, I got them exchanged after doing a little training. :rolleyes2 🤣

The Klein Koat grips are great but do add a little buik.
I've also had good success with dipping using Loctite Color Guard.
