Maybe your can came over here after the war after it was “liberated” from a shop.
Can you fill the trench before cold weather and just leave it open where you need to make connections?

I did manage to get the trench filled in, but likely won't get it hooked up this year.
That's an interesting idea about the can, I never thought it could be that old.
Wow, that is a lot of trenching for the rainwater. I'm really interested to see how it turns out.
I really should have rented a trenching machine for the day. The ground was very hard so it was very hard digging with the loader. My knee isn't 100% and it really didn't like the constant clutching I had to do.
