Sorry I didn’t proof my post and I meant bear and not best in your trailer or maybe it was a cabin. Speaking of that I bet you don’t leave your door open any more when you leave for a few minutes.

That was this video, shot by a buddy of mine when yes, a black bear climbed into our trailer and did his thing. He sold the video rights (my buddy, not the bear!) to a viral video outfit, and also had it used in UK show about trailer fails. I've gotten a case of beer out of the deal...ha. I didn't shoot it..just provided the trailer and buns apparently for the bear to snack on.

Well, here's the latest chapter in the garage project.

2018 Nissan LEAF (red) Service - 101 603 kms
- Brake fluid flush Bosch DOT 5.1

This time there's a video to go with it :) The ending is my attempt at comedy...

Dennis, I just watched this this morning (after doing a brake flush this weekend, unfortunately). Would have been good timing as it was my first. And forgive me, I used regular boring DOT4. 🤣

It seems you've got some real views on your channel. And ad supported? Curious... what kind of stats do you need for ad support, are there some kind of metrics like views, or is it all an AI algorithm this days? 🤣

In any case you're doing a great job with the videos, they are very informative and I'm sure will find an audience as they are useful. I definitely enjoyed the comedy bit at the end... reminds me of the @smarthomesolver channel about smart home automation ideas mostly, that always has a comedy bumper at the end.

As a bit of friendly constructive feedback (take it or leave it), I think if there's any way you could condense them a little, they would be even more appealing. I really think you have a lot of valuable information to share, so I don't mean dumbing it down (there's too much of that out there!!), but maybe some more scripted bits or being judicious about cutting out the few delivery flubs, etc. Other than that, they look and sound professional and I could really see it taking off for you! Clearly you've put a ton of effort into them so far... trust me I know it takes a lot of time to film and edit a 30min video, no matter what it is.

Love the header art your friend did... maybe you should create an intro card for your videos, wouldn't even need to be animated, with an audio sting as a hook / some branding.

Also, I subscribed 😁

Wow Nick, that is some solid advice. You're 100% right with the length as I do them non-scripted. What I used to do in the Cinevate days is just have a hit list of essential points on a flip chart off frame, and my team would be off camera to suggest a new take if something was too wordy etc. Then of course we also had a dedicated video editor in house. The flip chart/script is something I will do 100% either before, or after so I am editing to a tight list. I struggle a bit with the desire to include everything I think will be helpful, vs keeping it super short. I know 3-4 minutes is a nice length to target. Your advice is very much valued coming from your line of work :)

Right now there is no monetization in place, but after 1000 subscribers (and at least 4000 hours view time over the last year ) I can at least apply. My aspirations are quite low with respect to revenue...ha. Right now I enjoy the process as I learn to shoot pretty much solo, record decent audio and learn more least about basic editing. The good news is that there is so much to learn, I'll never be bored!

Picked up a drone this week so that will be interesting.

i'm looking forward to hearing about your drone. i've seen drones around my house for years in all shapes and sizes and noise levels. I also watched 1/2 Cup (may he still RIP) train on one that was about $60,000 for his work checking on towers in Austrailia. does the drone fly in below zero weather too and how windy is it in your areas?

of course we all hear of the millions of dollars given to content makers who have youtube channels and I know there are a few that still may get that, but my guess is now that they have 20+ years of content they can sell subscriptions and reduce the payouts, but not quite sure about any of that.

i'm sure i would be the top poster on GJ even though I didn't join to start posting about 8 years after it started, but I always preferred to address multiple poster's posts and questions in one post rather than 2-10 to avoid cluttering up a thread. I'm not sure I ever have much of value to say or if anybody has gained anything from my posts, but I do try to be positive most of the time.

that said you've always been one of my favorite posters to read what you have to say and I think even before you started remodeling your garage for the lift you sharpened a lawnmower and made a video.

since the drizzle has started and our temps are nearing freezing at night now i'm guessing you are getting ready for another deep freeze so best of luck with staying warm and healthy for another winter.

take care!!

Thanks Drives...you are indeed a fixture on this forum. Every one of your posts is a great example of kindness and courtesy, truly a model to aspire to. Your posts in my thread are a real motivation when it seems like it's radio silence out there...ha.

You're correct in that the first video I shot (sharpening the Fiskars reel mower) was right around the garage refurb project 10 years ago, and that one has seen over 240K plays. Fiskars customer service completely surprised me this month by actually sending out some parts to repair the mower, no questions asked really, 10 years after purchase. A follow up video is indeed in order.

It's only quite recently that I decided to make it a goal to get to 1000 subscribers on YT just to keep thing interesting and keep the learning train on the tracks. Shooting, editing, audio etc...it's a ton of stuff to learn.

The drone is probably the least expensive drone you can buy right now, with a 4K camera on a tiny 3 axis gimbal. I flew it for the first time today...very cool. Winds were gusting up to 80 km/h today and it worked surprisingly well, although I only flew it in my back yard at less than 20 feet to start. I had a small RC helicopter quite a few years back, and this drone is 1000% percent easier to fly. Today was my first time ever "flying" a drone. I use the word flying loosely as between the GPS, built in computer controls, and machine vision you're not so much flying it as just telling it where to go :) I had no issues flying it around my back yard, fully forested, in pretty high winds..and then landing it manually on a small piece of plywood 8-10 times for practice. The tech you're getting these days for $400 is insane.

4K video, 3 axis gimbal, 32 minutes flight time per battery, max speed 57 km/h, max wind speed resistance 38km/h. We had some gusts here well beyond that, and it got pretty "excited" but managed them just fine with no intervention. It was 2C today and very windy..no issues at all. I see no issues in very cold weather, as long as the battery is kept warm before use. It generates a fair bit of heat in use, so should be just fine in the cold. We'll find out this winter!

Pic credits and review here:

1731377211465.png

Folded up it's pretty small and would fit no problem in a jacket pocket. With the battery it's also under 250 grams, so doesn't require a license to fly.

I edited up a shorter clip on the use of camber bolts to adjust front end camber on cars like the LEAF that have no factory camber adjustment for front end alignment. Mine was about 2 degrees negative after all the front end work I had done last month. These bits got us back to within the factory spec of 0.5 degrees negative. Given the expense of the low rolling resistance tires I had installed a few years back, it made sense to get alignment back to spec. Certainly, replacing ball joints and drive shafts, a proper realignment was in order as well. I spend about $200 more on labor than I should have due to an important missing detail in the MOOG instructions for these parts. The omission (asymmetric washer orientation) is covered in the video.

A few drone shots from my folk's place this morning at sunrise :) Fog rolled in right after so I was glad to be up and flying right at sunrise! I was flying 50-100 feet up. Air temps were just about freezing, however at this time of year the water in Lake Superior (which is up to 1300 feet deep) is relatively warm. It makes for some amazing visuals, particularly in January when temps might dip to -25C, but the water in many areas is still not frozen over as it slowly cools down.

Wow, for a 'cheap' drone I'm very impressed, those images look great, especially pulled from video! (and amazing nature / landscape, too)

Obviously a drone is perfect for landscapes like that, but maybe there is some creative use for your YouTube endeavors?

Ah, Nick ( @nicholam77 ) you have me figured out :)

10 years back I posted a "How to Sharpen A Fiskars Reel Mower.." vid that is at about 240K plays now. At the end, I put in a bit of cheesy dad humor (at 16:11) which has garnered quite a few comments.

So in my 10 year product update to come (Fiskars sent me some replacement bits for free, no questions asked) I wanted to keep to that ah, tradition. Now my daughter is 21 and was not into a remake, but my 83 old Dad was. Below is my rough cut for the new extra cheesy ending :)

wow that is some pics and would love to see the fly over video you took those pics off of. have you posted it on your YouTube channel yet? I need to check it out and others and subscribe. originally I thought SUBSCRIBE meant you had to pay something, but really it's just to mark that YouTube channel so you can go back to it, AND I think eventually with enough subscribers they send that content maker a check. i'm not sure how that all works and yes I haven't recieved a penny for posting here on GJ, but I did have a member scold me for not paying the $50 to GJ to have my name a different color. funny thing is that member wasn't one of those paying a $50 annual fee.

I tried a fiskar mower and it just didn't work well for my small yard that I now put in a 8 inch wide (and 7 inches thick) concrete boarder. in case anybody is interested in making a form that curves I did mine with 1x6 trex (plastic) decking that is one inch thick and if I needed a tight bend I cut out material about every 1/4 inch with my little Ryobi 18v skill saw and staked it with concrete stakes. my 15x25 & 15x30 sections of my front yard took about 100 60 pound bags of concrete I picked up at Lowe's and HD. I had double bricks for a few years but that ended up being too hard to weed. i'm getting my 80 year old Craftsman push mower sharpened by my small engine wizard that goes by the name of SANTA and he has the suit and reputation and of course the look to go with the nickname.

I did buy a Fiskar's hand edger that I just about every other week during the spring and summer that works great. happy to hear your old video got you some new parts and you and your dad have a good video in the making for the next one.

take care and stay warm!!!

Woody: of course I appreciate you replying to all my questions and requests as per usual, but now I have more if you don't mind answering a few more. did you buy and did you use that drone you posted to shoot that video? wasn't it under $200? WOW. i'm sure you have more skills than most (and especially me), but what is the range on that since it looks like you flew about a mile? hard to learn how to fly and take videos? i'd love to take one on vacation so can it be carried on a plane in our luggage or do we have to check it? how did you put music on your video? WELL DONE!!

EB: I think for your $50 (not sure what the price is now) GJ was giving out maybe T shirts or tools or something that if I recall was worth the money and then GJ turned your name to red. If you might know an alliance member that might know more if you don't find the link Zanyard posted helpful. When I retired (without a pension or SS in 2008) I opted to do all the DIY around here instead of learning a new trade or participating in the BS that the job I had for 30 years had become. My bride who's job was advancing in leaps and bounds agreed "sort of like I agreed" to be the only income the first 15 years we were married so she could raise our kids. I turned this into a bit of a long story which might be my montra. hence money was a bit tight then so being a big participant for me personally and helping others here was what I could do. I almost forgot about it and might opt for paying that now that things are different, but i've almost run out of time to post on here now that my bride isn't working cause we are loving life and our kid's and grandchildren.

@drivesitfar , loving that Craftsman mower!

Drives, yes, I used the Potensic Atom to shoot the video. I also used the Drone in the 2nd video I posted to get the aerial shots with my Dad pushing the reel mower. I was just trying to get a sunrise out at my folks place and conditions turned out to be pretty amazing. Right place, right time on that front. The basic drone is $299 USD...so pretty affordable. I flew it about 3.2 km (10 000 feet) away over the lake yesterday, but the issue is not range, but rather battery power. It has 32 minutes of flight time, max. Advertised range (under ideal conditions with line of sight and no radio interference) is 6 km. That said, for a drone under 250 grams, in most cases you need to be able to see it during flight as per "VLOS" rules. If you do lose signal, or the drone thinks it will run out of battery, it will return to the launch site by itself. You can also just press the "Return" button if you're lost etc. and it will return as well :) It's capable of maintaining position in up to 38 km/h winds, and will fly at about 60 km/h in "sport" mode. Flying is easy mostly because you don't really have to "fly" the drone. It has GPS, downward vision, and a barometer so if you get confused or lost, you just take your hands off the controls and it will stop and hover in place via GPS etc. You could take it on a trip very easily as it is under 250 grams and exempt from licensing etc. in most countries. You'd want to check regs in the country you're visiting. The "fly more" kit has 2 extra batteries, fast charger and comes in a bag that is about the size of a small lunch kit.

I'm using a paid version of Davinci Resolve Studio to do editing these days, but they have a free version that is crazy good, and more than capable of cutting a few clips and putting sound to it. Youtube has a royalty free sound library that you can access if you create an account. You can also use Youtube to edit and host your clips for free, and they don't have to be public.

Great information and I’m going to do more research and hopefully in 2025 I’ll be flying a drone too. I’m sure I’ll have more questions but you answered my original ones with enough good detail and facts to not only peak my interest but make me smile that I might actually be able to fly one. Thanks

Now my **** is getting dialed in I plan to add a drone to ‘follow’ me as well go pro on the cage.
You should look at the DJI NEO for this application. Max follow-me speeds are 30km/h or so, but it is small, cheap and will follow without a controller. Shoots in 4K too. It's super simple to use for basic follow-me stuff. You launch and retrieve it in your hand.

You can also fly it from a phone, or a DJI controller :)

I am my own worst enemy. I returned the Potensic Atom and upgraded to a DJI Mini 4 Pro. There is a night and day difference in both price and performance, in all respects. Like the Atom, the mini is under 250 grams so does not require licensing etc.

If you want simple, cheap, easy to fly, don't mess with camera settings, will be shooting on bright days, and want a kit that is ready to fly out of the box, the Potensic Atom is about perfect. That said, I could not get past the low light performance, and noise in the video. It's not a fair comparison really as the Mini Pro 4 has an image sensor that is twice the size, and has vastly better video performance, ability to shoot LOG-D format (kind of like RAW but for video) and has full camera/exposure controls. It has quite more flight/control options to take things up quite a few notches for ultra smooth, controlled shots as well. Comparing footage straight off the drones on a 65" 4K TV, the difference in video quality is startling. Oh, and the Mini 4 has full 360 degree obstacle avoidance...

More later :)

Temps have dropped down to -25C, so naturally I'm out flying the drone. DJI lists the operating cutoff as -10C, but I'm here in wind chills of -31 C, doing just fine :)

Temps are low, however the lake has not frozen yet due to it's mass. The result is some pretty stunning images like this screen grab from the video. It only happens for a few weeks each year so I always try to grab a few pics...

Woooy: great tips on the drones not only on which one to buy and giving a few pros and cons, but great operating tips too. stay warm!!

just a quick questions since you've been experiencing below zero temps for years now which brand is your long johns and brands and types of clothing and jacket? pretty cool that you don't need a scarf or face protection when it's that cold or maybe you do if it's more than a few minutes. thanks for the drone vids and until I actually saw a car move down a street I thought it was a painting you were showing.

Thanks as always for the kind words Drives :) The images straight from the DJI Mini 4 Pro drone are pretty crazy, even on a 65" 4K HDR TV. I'm shooting in 10 bit HLG formats which translate to very nice HDR images on TVs etc.

Clothing would be pretty long topic. We'd save a pile of cash having only one season to deal with, that's for sure.

Winter clothing for outdoor activities boils down to:

1. Boots (super cold heavy duty, light general use, fat biking, and of course the special ones for cross country and downhill skiing)
2. Headgear (everything from full face covering, to light caps, and of course the helmets etc. for downhill skiing and fat biking)
3. Layers (2-3 first two super breathable and the third layer depending on the activity. Columbia breathable layer 1, light fleece over that, and then the top layer depending on temp and activity.
4. Gloves/mitts (specialized for cross country, downhill, fat biking, and then light/heavy for stuff around the house).

So ya, we do a rotation twice a year from the storage bins for all that stuff. It's crazy when you think about it. I very much look forward to the warm seasons where all I have to worry about is t-shirts, shorts and sandals...ha.

Thanks for the 411 on your winter gear. Even at 40 degrees (f) I usually have long underwear under my work pants, a t shirt under 2 hoodie sweatshirts and my favorite gear for maybe all year round are Duluth copper wool socks cause they keep me warm but I don’t sweat in them.

Here’s to a great holiday season and stay warm and safe.

^This is why us northern folks need basements, big garages, and sheds. For seasons of weather means FOUR seasons of clothes and associated equipment. If I told you I have 3 pairs of winter boots would you think less of me?

No, because I have 3 pairs of winter boots as well, and 5 if you count the ski boots for downhill and cross country skiing :-(

We don't have hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides or much for tornadoes. There's no poisonous snakes, and not much else that will kill you. Instead, we're under snow for 4-5 months, and have the joy of mosquitoes (at least out at camp) in the summer. Apparently we spend a lot on boots.

Well then you've got warm and wet weather gear too...duh. Well, you might be a bit too far north for warm weather gear but you get the idea. ;)
Yes, with a family of four, you definitely need storage for the seasonal stuff...and spring and fall bring different challenges. You're right though in that there's essentially four seasons to sort.

It's a bit frustrating for biking/skiing though in the shoulder months when you're dealing with mud/slush. My weight profile tends to follow a predictable trend

Our 2nd EV is my daughter's car, so not something I drive regularly. After doing a designated driver pick up last week for my daughter and friends, I was surprised with how poor the night lighting was on the highway. Now this is the same car exactly as our 1st EV, which has excellent LED headlights so I knew something was amiss. Even the high beams were ****.

Fast forward to the weekend when I checked the headlight aim. They were aimed so low that the cutoff was about 30 feet in front of the car...so actually dangerous in my opinion. This video goes over the aiming (easiest job ever) and also updated the OEM driving lamps from 35 watt halogen, to 8.5 watt LEDs with a much brighter, but more diffuse illumination pattern.

There are so many cars out there with retinal burning LED headlights, rest assured I have no desire to be one of those guys...but properly aiming and updating these lights can dramatically ramp up light illumination, while being responsible in terms of other drivers eyeballs too. :)
