Upon closer inspection, I found a stamp on the end of the inside tray (pic below). It is stamped JAPAN. I was a little shocked to see this because of how heavy & well made it is. I'm sure they made quality stuff too. I'm not seeing much online about vintage Japanese toolboxes. Are they uncommon?
Greetings Ben,

I’ve never seen a box marked JAPAN like that. I especially like the indents along the sides; very cool box indeed!

How tall is it? I’d say paint it a medium Satin Green? You can pay tribute to what’s probably the original color, and give a nod to your SK side at the same time. IIRC, Krylon just re released their Satin Italian Olive, which is a really nice color. Not to flat, not too bright.😎.

Keep us posted on this !

I'll have to post measurements tomorrow when I'm back out in the shop. I'm tempted to paint it blue like in the underline Craftsman logo pic below. I could also put this logo on the box once it's painted. I'm considering this because I'm going to put a set of Craftsman underlined circle H in it. Or I could paint it green like it's original color? 🤔

There are a few threads from here where someone has restored a 1930s CM Bandsaw and Drillpress, and he gives the Brand/Color for this period CM blue aerosol. I’ll look in my bookmarked links and report back.

I was only curious on the height to give context to those interesting notches in the side walls. I appreciate you checking on the measurements though.

I’ll be back👆🏽

Picked up this late 40's old craftsman workhorse yesterday for $45. Looks rough but has the cool early "trunk corner" lid. Drawers and slides are nice and straight. Should clean up well and it has "the look" for sure! (ignore the visual monstrosity on the left...its going to find a home with a local collector friend :) )

Excellent score JoCo. The Rallye Box (?) is treasure to some, and I’ll bet your buddy is happy it’s heading his way🤙🏼

The Rallye box looks like it was made by Pennens Corp, with the hump shaped top corner edges?

I just sold a mid 1970s JC. Penney box which shared a similar look; very well constructed box in its own right.

I had to pay up for my “visual monstrosity” at a Tahoe yard sale. It started at $5.00 but I ended up paying $1.00 and I might have overpaid.🤑IMG_6596.jpeg

I knew it looked recently familiar! You did good Don. They were the talk of the crowd ( to about the curb in most neighborhoods) when I was a wee lad😂. Still a cool style, and a nice memory for many.

The box is 4-1/2" tall, 6" deep & 19" wide. It's perfect size for my 1/2" drive Craftsman circle H socket set.

That’s going to be a great kit. I didn’t have the CM resto in my articles, so I know it’s in my YT saved list. I’ll check and advise later.

Ok Ben,
I found the bandsaw refurb project over at Winky’s Workshop YT Channel. DON’T go over there!!!! 😂😁😂 He’s got tons of great ideas and machines!

Anyway, I was wrong in that he custom matched his paint and sprayed it himself. I suggest Krylon satin aerosols-I think they have an ink/indigo blue that might suit your style.

Tip: If you go with any “primer and paint” in one brand, ALWAYS put primer down first, especially with Krylon. I learned the hard way. Using primer makes the color and final finish 10X more durable and attractive.

JoCo is usually the one pulling the craftsman but I'm the one who posted the box. It's not Sears most attractive design by a long shot but it's a sign of the times back then :). Fake wood was all the rage :). I figured for $10 it was totally worth it based on how straight it is and the badge is also intact so it was a no brainer. Actually one of the most uncommon craftsman tool boxes is the rallye edition 3 drawer lower roller. I'm sure this box was most likely made by waterloo as they were Sears go to.

Where can I get replacement springs for this type of lock mechanism? Its a 1952-59 3-drawer Rolling Cabinet. This thing has been flooded several times with saltwater, so I think its time to replace them.

A few weeks ago, I posted about an ugly pink-primered Husky tool box that I picked up cheap...

20241019_124841.jpg

I throwed some paint at it... cleaned the pink overspray off the casters... and cleaned it out...

20241113_090347.jpg

It's not perfect, but at least it's not pink primer...

Looks great. I believe the most recent consensus on those is they're from an unknown Canadian factory right around when Stanley bought Beach.

Here is a cute little Kennedy side box I picked up today at a swap meet. I hadn't seen this particular cantilever box before but have a spot for it on the side of a machinist chest. Cleaned up pretty easy. Ed.

Post pix when its in place. I have one hiding around here somewhere, and no where good to mount it.

Grabbed it in D42's hood.

I've had one similar for ages, but it has dividers sort of tacle box style. I have it on a smaller 7 drawer roller with small bits of reloading stuff in it. The roller has mostly reloading stuff in it too.

I have a red one on my brown crinkle finish Kennedy stack, keeping my eyes open for the brown one. Looks like I just missed ORC at yesterdays event, and the brown cantilever.

Here's a few pics of where I mounted it. The big wooden chest has carried too heavy a load for quite a while. Smaller taps, end mills, and misc items get lost in the jumble and this little guy will help. There are mounting challenges for sure and I think mid height is best so you can easily see inside. Anyway it's mounted for now...pics below. Ed.

Could be they are a little more common than I thought. Reloading bench would be a great spot for one.
That's nifty. Great find, ORC!
Thanks zanyad. Hopefully it will help keep that small tooling a little more organized.

I was keeping an eye out for you and smoke too bmw but with four large sheds and that crowd it was easy to cross paths and not see people. I had a decent day and picked up a couple other neat things as well. Box was in the dirt floor show barn. The first one I went into. Ed.

I'm a vintage tools and toolbox junkie like most here I guess. Glad to have found this site. I recently picked up what I believe is a 50's Snap On set. I cannot find a date stamp on this. I also cannot find another double door, 8 drawer top box. Seems to be a bit of a unicorn. If anyone has any info on it, I'd be most appreciative. I have checked all the catalogues on collecting snap on, to no avail, save for the bottom box that seems pretty easy to identify.Set.jpg

I bought this Beach carry box used about 20 years ago. It was in beautiful shape then and I've tried to keep it that way. I've always been curious about its age and I'm asking if anyone knows if these boxes had a date or code stamped into the sheet metal somewhere. Any input would be appreciated.

Tom B.
I have the same box. Bought at auction. It's in my restoration queue. It is pretty beat up, but nice enough, certainly not as nice as yours. Good job keeping it looking that good.

That is a unique box indeed. It appears to be as tall or taller than the roller that it is sitting on. What are the dimensions if you don't mind?
