2024 Garage Sale Thread (13th Annual)

Hit the Tallahassee flea market with my 10 year old daughter. Here I was digging through piles of wrenches and tools, not finding anything spectacular. I did notice my box trailers rims have rusted through and needed to be replaced. So I walked out with a NOS trailer rim and tire for $40 (Wally World wants $97). Not one of my best deals, but it's something I needed.

But my Daughter found a necklace/ cross she liked and paid $5.00 bucks. Owner threw in a new baseball cap in with it. She comes rushing up to me excited over what she got. As I'm inspecting it looking for the made in China or Taiwan stamp. Turns out the necklace and cross are 14 karat gold. Looked online, they're on sale all over the place for $269- $289.

I was like dang girl, nice find. Not at all what I expected to drag home today, but hey that's life!

Another FBM find I’m afraid - idle browsing for garage/barn building stuff lead me to looking at a lathe out of curiosity - I have been vaguely thinking about acquiring a bigger one. The ad described “2 lathe machines“, but I could only really see one... till I got to the last (terrible) picture.

Another low level background quest for the last decade has been to find a replacement head for my milling machine. Parts are nigh on impossible to find for niche interest 50’s german toolroom mills, so I have also been looking at complete machines too - however they are sufficiently well regarded that good condition well tooled machines regularly change hands for 3-5000 Euros… often in Germany…

back to the random awful FBM lathe machines… turns out the last picture is actually of a rather neglected Thiel 158 Milling machine - exactly what I have been hunting for, and only an hour up the road.



we agreed on £325 and I brought it home there and then.

I went to two estate sales up in "the city" to the north of me, and then did some swapping with a collector friend in the afternoon, before we both rushed off to see the college football games. Here is what I dragged back to the lair:

The first estate sale was on it's third day, and I expected most things to be gone by the time I was able to get there, but it was still full of things, unsurprising as it was overpriced low end things for the most part. So, after much searching I found the Snap-on drill index and a small Duro wrench for not too much, $12.

After that, I hit the sale that Smokeshow hit the day before, and the difference between then and when I was able to get there was striking! It had been picked pretty clean, unsurprising, seeing what Smoke dragged home. But I did find a few things: two old books on steam engineering, Lufkin catalog, manual for a mill, sockets and extension for a Duro/Indestro 1/4 hex drive, vintage ignition screwdriver (bent), Starrett machine chart, and a box of steel pins, $13.

And then the trading began! I brought him a box of vintage Craftsman misc. and a P&C 3/4" set, and this is what I got in return:

Union machinist chest (Murry approved!), but I still owe him a Craftsman machinist chest in return.


Blue Point ignition wrench set, Blackhawk 1/4" breaker bar, five (5) Truth DBE's, and...


this early socket wrench set. It seems complete, but I cannot for the life of me remember who made it, so if anyone else remembers, please let me know.

Got the chain saw to fire up and then promptly broke the starter recoil spring. I know that the saw is a rebranded Remington 34cc Mighty Mite so hopefully be able to find a replacement spring.​

Casual solo stop at the Weil Antiques Center parking lot flea market left me $8 lighter, with a No1S&H nail puller, Bonney stamped steel 3/8x7/16 No120 DOE, Bonney war-era stubbie, and a 1930 collection of Joseph Addison’s Sir Roger de Coverley Papers edited by Howard Bement.

That nail puller is cool!

...The starrett thread gauge was a bonus...

Very slow day today -walked the collage FM 2X (got there early) and left with nothing I didn't walk in with. Shortage of Weekend warriors too. 3 planned yard sales, minimal there too but I did manage to spend 7-1/2 bucks total. The TOOs were drive bys.


First "producing" YS: I think the bronze "tools" are sculpting tools? and a Mini whisk broom. that's headed for camp gear. A buck each:



And from their Free Pile - Mostly "Supplies" but a rusty multi bit driver tool that may be for clock work - I'll know more after de-rusting, and a double end driver, the tiny DOE is Vlchek and was in the box of rust. brass handle. NOS nickle plated Clevis, Bearing on a stud - That cleaned up nicely later, a Cable cuff, I use these a lot; Electrical parts, aluminum stock and some brackets of some sort, also aluminum.





Second yard sale - Cedar strip canoe model. For cents 50, I'll put it up in the hallway with the "fishing" stuff






Last stop, A 1/4" Xcelite nut driver with a 17" shank, a small, likely Craftsman mini Driver, no markings but...
, and some heavy magnet wire. $4 all:

I've been watching "local" online auctions lately. Apparently, so are a number of professional pickers as the bids go right out of my ball park with two days to go... A Wilton 4" Bullet is currently bidding at $140 and I'd have to drive ten hours RT to pick it up ("local" can be a long ways away out here)! Desirable Coleman lanterns, pretty much the same.

Hit a couple sales this weekend, still really sparse and not many deals to be found at first day prices. Dragged home a bunch of **** anyway...

Can't remember what I paid for this stuff but nothing too crazy. Grabbed the Craftsman Professional speed lok set for 5 bucks just because it was complete and not used much. Can't really tell if this is USA though as the packaging isn't marked USA although a few of the bits are. Maybe a mix...



Interesting little snappy driver, I don't know if I've ever found one with a wood handle...



Unfortunately I do remember what I paid for this lot, they counted everything up at a buck or so each (other than the socket sets) and ended up at $45. Probably should have put some stuff back but oh well. Pretty sure I have everything I need to complete both socket sets and the craftsman combo wrenches always sell fast. There's also a Proto 1/4 rat, Walden hinge, and some kind of interesting Snap on 12 point impacts...haven't seen this particular variety before.

I'm finally back in the game after a full month of nada!
I spied a little unidentifiable box in the ES pictures and using my keen navigational skill, triangulated its position in the garage so when the starting bell sounded, I was first to find it. More than one of the guys who beat me into the garage said they were after it, but couldn't find it. It turned out to be a Kennedy Mechanics Kit. Measurements of 14x7x9 make it a No. 114. Early versions show up in 1916 & 17 catalog excerpts, this one makes appearances in 1924, 27 & 30. In the 1941 cat, larger versions are available, but this size has vanished.


I was expecting it to be empty, but found a load of long-arm cleaning equipment and supplies.


It would be an understatement to say everything was well oiled. The two Hoppe's pamphlet's pages are stuck together and very brittle--the No. 9 has a 1946 printing date. I have no idea what the group of gray and brass sliders are--sound off if you know!
Of particular interest are the two wooden cleaning rods. The lighter one on top is unmarked but the darker one is stamped B.G.I. Co, with a patent date of Feb 9, 1892. BGI is Bridgeport Gun Implement Co. and the patent concerns the manufacture of the threaded rod couplings.


Also included was an M10 .30cal cleaning rod from 1954--the box is completely soppy with gun oil. Two more items I am at a loss to identify are the pair of obvious wrenches, but for what application, and the small steel rod threaded into a very sturdy steel protective case. The case is stamped on the end with SI or possibly IS, depending on which way you hold it--a true labeling blunder.


I also picked up a 3/8 Blackhawk 3" extension and a Snap-on Ferret F-6 extension with an E ('44) date code.
Everything totaled $30, but after exiting, one of the guys I see frequently at sales was curious about the contents, and noting some apparent gun sighting hardware in one of the small compartments, he offered and I accepted $15 for the very small handful of bits I had absolutely no use for. So, $15 on the day.

A nearly 8-foot jointer plane (note the door frame) for $150.

Last yard sale of the day. Skunked on tools. I am positive this is not an authentic Victorian bird cage. However, it's extremely well made (zero bolts, everything spot welded), and looks cool as hell in person. The lady sold it super cheap to buy weed.

I spotted one estate sale that mentioned tools this morning so we were off to Corte Madera in Marin County. After a scenic ride across the San Rafael bridge past San Quentin we took the Sir Francis Drake exit on our way to Golden Hind Passage in Corte Madera. We came home with a few rusty treasures.
A Crown carry box
Wartime S-K 3/8” drive ratchet and short extension.
Wartime 3/8” drive D-I sockets
Some Plomb 3/8” drive WF tools.

Silly complete Pocket Socket set, my second.

The steel and brass strips are strippers clips for loading old fixed-box magazine rifles. They typically hold five cartridges.

Hoppe products always leak. The new, plastic bottles are worse than those old glass ones. I save the glass bottles and re-use them for this reason.

I think those "Legos" are actually "American Plastic Bricks" and Halsam brand - by Elgo Plastics Inc. Date range is right. No affiliation with Legos and the histories I found researching after finding a set a while back claims no linkage at all - Not sure I believe that... the timing was near simultaneous

It's about 30 percent Halsam and the rest Lego. Great eye! None of it's rare or valuable, but interesting history.

Those two wrenches are M1 Carbine gas piston nut wrenches. The oil bottle is for an M1 Carbine as well made by International Silver.

That set is an unusual find. Very nice! Love the box with the zip. That style ratchet mechanism was used by Williams in both chrome and industrial , Hornet, and Columbia branded tools as well .
