Stacked my toolboxes

I have been thinking this for years
Stacking two snap on bottom boxes to make a drawer cabinet.

I tiped one on its back to take off the wheels.
Then using calipers I measured the location of 4 of the caster bolt holes.
Used the calipers to scrib the hole locations and trilled some holes.
Stacked the boxes and using longer bold I bolted them together.

I’m rather happy with the results

I use a few of the husky boxes, cheap fast storage. Drawers make it so much easier to organize the small stuff.
I'm not short, but I'd probably need one of those kick-around stools with spring loaded casters to see into the top drawer.

Some blocking sandwiched between a couple pieces of plywood/osb makes a nice slide out step under the box depending on the caster height.

Looks good, almost factory designed.

Will the original castors and their mounting points under the bottom box be able to support the weight of (now) 2 boxes plus contents?

Where those 2 boxes now meet, are they meeting flange to flange - seems so in the pics?
If so, maybe put some spacers between the 2 panels being bolted together so that the sheet metal doesn't start collapsing around the bolts you're using to connect the boxes.

I did leave out that I cut pieces of plywood the right thickness that goes between the boxes

we have two 42" husky chests at work for special tools. Rather than stacking them we just bolted the backs of them together. Had to swap the wheels around so the whole thing would roll/turn properly but the whole ordeal was easy. we are taking on another brand and it'll come with a bunch more tools, so we may end up stealing the stacking idea.

I won't need them with the new boxes and at work so I can't take a picture.

Just 3-4 pieces of 4x4 down to 16-18" and lay side by side, Take a measurement, cut 2 pieces of plywood/OSB that size and sandwich the 4x4s with the plywood. Screw/nail it together for an instant step. A section of webbing can be nailed to the side and used to pull it out from under the box.

Using 1/2" plywood and 4x4 will give you a 4.5" tall step. That should fit under most toolboxes.
