FB market place *****. I thought I finally had my machine sold. Had a price that was agreed and were gonna meet at my bank. The dude even sent me a picture of the cashiers check. In order to sell my Skidsteer I needed to arrange transport. My buddy rob has a diamond C gooseneck that he let me barrow. I picked up the trailer sunday morning. Loaded my kubota that afternoon ready to transport to the new owner in the am... or so I thought. First that morning I got a message saying he'd be late... with no updated time given. Finally an hour later he said 1030.... Just as im about to leave he informs me that he cant make it at 1030. I wait till noon still havent heard from him. I have things I have to do and im wasting my time. I unload my machine put it back in the shop and go to drop my trailer off. I was so heated that this guy wasted my time and money.

That's one of the reasons I have so much stuff I don't need. Selling something used to be "Meet me at the Shell Station" and ten minutes later the deal was done. Now it's "Meet me at the end of that big sewer pipe" and some ******* flushes just as you get there.

Well I finally sold it. Basically sold it for what I paid for it. The market for machines is weird. Now I have some room in my shop for activities. Im sure later down the road Ill get another one but Im happy to no longer have it. I was going to use it for my business but I decided to move in a different direction.

Not garage related. This was my solo trip to Seattle. Ive never traveled there. Wasnt looking forward to going during the holiday season but the Host of the podcast I got invited to had the date set. The morning I leave to the airport I go to find a Jeep blocking my driveway. I was in a rush. This day was the last day of school and there was a performance. During these events ppl sorta park all over the place. I ran up to the school and told the principle that theres a car blocking the driveway. By the time I ran back to the house the lady that was blocking my driveway had realized what she had done and fixed the Issue. Make it to the Air port on time. I cannot recommend TSA pre for those who travel a lot. Im not much of a traveler but I decided to get it. My wifes had it for awhile. Both airports were crazy busy. I think I waiting in line 10 mins each time. It went by very quick.
Made it to Seattle, Stayed sorta down town. Walking distance to the space needle. The area I was in was sorta tech hub. Google, Microsoft, amazon had offices all around. Most of the ppl there were young kids I assume having some sorta tech job with one of the 3. It took me a while to find good places to each. When I finally got to my hotel I walked a few blocks found a place that looked nice. Before I sat down I looked at the menu. It was a vegan restaurant. Not my cup of tea. The next place I went to... same thing. Finally I found a decent sports bar. The craft beer they have in washington was amazing. Not to far away I found a roof time bar that made great old fashions. It was a trip to see gardens, trees and grass growing on top of these buildings roofs. Its a concrete jungle so they had to adapt.
Overall awesome trip had a good conversation with a retired cop that owns a Jiu Jitsu gym. Im going to go back next yr for a Jiu Jitsu / gun class that he hosts.

Since Ive been back from my trip I havent had much time in the shop. Now its a few days after xmas I was able to sneak in for a few. Prior to that I had to set up my sons 3d printer. Hes been busy printing things as we speak. Next I sorta had to help my youngest with his concord lego set. He typically doesn't need help but I think he skipped a few steps. Once we found the problem it was not too bad to fix. Finally got to season my Cigar humidor. Its been sitting in my shop for almost two weeks.
Wife wanted Tomahawk steaks for xmas dinner. Finished the night with a old fashion.

Cheers

I finally had to move my humidor out of my shop. It gets too cold in there and was messing up the temp. Ive adopted the 70-70 rule. 70 degrees and 70 RH. Since its been inside the house Its stayed in that range. Now at some point I have to fill the sand thing out with all my cigars.
Finally I was able to score some fire wood at the facility that I work at. They dropped 70ish trees prior to x mas. The Boss incharge was kind enough to have the workers leave me a pile. I tried to grab it a few days while they were working but I could access the pile. They parked their trucks blocking the entrance. I could have asked them to move but I didnt wanna bug them. The day after Xmas I got up early so I could pick up the wood. Looked like someone beat me too it. My pile was gone and some a hole brought a mini skid and was loading a trailer. I was pretty pissed that I got screwed out of wood.
That was short lived I found a pile yesterday. 4 truck loads of mostly eucalyptus and a little bit of pine. My back and arms are sore but Im happy to have slightly over a cord for next yr. I doubt my family will go through all that in a yr but its nice not have to pay for it. Most yrs im able to get wood for free. Some from where I work some from friends.

Its been a busy few couple of weeks. Last week my mom went into the ER. Thursday - Monday I was out in AZ taking care of her. My mom has been pretty healthy up to this point. She developed Afib with some flu like symptoms. She's never had that before. Her friend drove her to the ER. She stayed in the hospital for 3 days. Finally She was able to go home. The DR thought it might be a viral infection and the AFib was secondary. All her blood work came back negative. EKG and echocardiogram were unremarkable. She seems to be on the mend. I missed one day of work. Not that big of a deal it was just an orientation day. Monday I was able to clean up my safe a bit. My son printed m some AR mag holders. I installed them while the kids were back in school.
Wednesday morning the power went out at 7am. Santa Ana winds came through. Edison shut the power off to most of the town. Lucky for us we have a generator. Kids stayed home from school. No power at the schools either. This little generator powered 3 fridges, wifi router, tankless water heater, my sons pc, living room tv and a couple iPhone chargers. We were out of power for 40 hrs. It came back on this am at 3am. Didnt get much work down in my shop. I have a few projects i need to get done this weekend. I did have a flathead cigar in the shop yesterday. Outside was too windy. Not too bad in the shop.

Anyone of you guys interested in podcasts. I mentioned I was on a podcast last month. Here's the link if you guys wanna listen. Its related to the fire service.

Same deal here with the power. The electrician will be here tomorrow to upgrade our old panel, and install the interlock/inlet for the gen so then it will only take one cord not 6. Plus we can run the furnace.
If you dont mind me asking how much is he charging you? I need to get that done as well. This sadly will most likely be a common occurrence when it gets too hot or too windy.

Nothing much has been going on. Ive been pretty busy with school and work. I decided to go take some Online classes to finish up my AS. Lucky for me I only needed two. Also have to take some CFO classes for work. Fun stuff.... One thing I did get to was fixing my gate. A few months ago when we got Santa Ana winds the wind pushed my gate and the motor pad. It put a 1 ft gap in the fence. We finally got tired of it. typically we'd use my skid steer to fix it. Id push the pad with the end of my bucket. Since I've sold the skid steer The next best thing was wrapping a chain around the base and pulling it with my truck. I was able to pull it into position and close the gap but this will be a short term fix. The problem is that the concrete pad that the motor sits on isn't anchored to the ground very well. When they poured the base they just poured it flush with the ground... I have no idea why they didn't go down a ft. We re probably going to have to take the motor off, pour another base that's deeper into the ground. Then attach the motor to the new base. I don't think this is something im going to do. I might get the gate company to do it.
A buddy of mine came by the house the other day with his 16 dodge 2500. He said it's throwing a U010C code. Lost communication with turbo charger. Im not a dodge guy or cummins dude but im sure I could figure this out. Sounds like it's probably the turbo actuator. The part ranges from 300 to 1000k. He told me that he's only noticed performance issues while towing his 5thwheel. Other than that no issues. He's just over 107k which is pretty common with a replacement actuator. Just reading through the grape vine of the inter webs it sounds like if you take it to dodge they try and tell you that it's a bad turbo and that's 4k. Once the actuators off you can tell if the turbos bad. The problem is that once you replace the actuator its needs to be calibrated. I don't have the software nor do I know any friends that have it. Most of my friends are ford guys. Looks like city diesel sells a replacement for 1k without it needing to be calibrated. Im gonna try and get him to come over next weekend and take a look at it. I can use a volt meter to test the actuator. The ****** part is that you need to take the passenger side tire off.... For those of you interested I'll keep you posted.

Monday this week I saw a few drops of oil in my shop. Sure enough my 250 has an oil leak. It was really hard to tell where it was coming from. I tried using my scope to narrow it down. Where ever it was coming from was on top of the motor on the drivers side. My truck has 140K on it. I assumed it was the crank case vent. It hadn't been replaced. ****** part is that I couldn't find the OEM part at any dealer and I couldn't tare into it until Friday. I was afraid driving the truck. If the vent is clogged it can put a lot of back pressure on the seals which will lead to other leaks. I was able to find a knock off brand on amazon. It took about 30mins to take off. In the process I dropped one nut and a hex socket. I looked and looked with no success of finding either. My lovely wife climbed up with a new set of eyes to find my missing items. There still there somewhere. They'll just fall off at some point. I thought the filter was clogged but once I got the old one out I found that a plastic piece that goes through a stud had broken off. There's where the leak came from. Im 90% done. Just need to find a nut for the cold air clamp.
Our hot water heater took a dump wed. I got up in the am to take a shower before I went to a class that im taking for work. Nothing like a really really cold shower in the am. The heater is being replaced under warranty. It was a pain in the *** dealing with the supplier. Trying to find order numbers and invoices from 2016... When finding the information only for them to tell me that they don't send replacements. After fighting with them they sent me a new heater.... just to the wrong address. They sent the heater to the plumber who originally installed it. Hopefully they can fix this issue. it's one thing after the other. still looking for a win.

Try blowing around with some compressed air to dislodge the missing nut and socket

@Xti04 I will try that. I took my truck for a short rip yesterday. Im sure they fell out somewhere. I have a pretty long driveway. I'll check the yard today.

Updated picture of the CCV box with the broken mount. The broken piece was still on the stud. 100% that's where the leak was coming from. This means back pressure wasn't the cause. Which is good for my seals. Been meaning to do an oil change this week. Finally had the time. I used to be able to change oil without making a mess. Now every time I make some sort of mess. That's even with using cardboard....

That's interesting I smacked/drug my breather box against the degas bracket pretty good when I pulled the engine. All I did was scratch it. It appears to be ABS. Wonder if they went to some kinda "green" plastic?
It's the OG from 2011 im not sure but it could be the issue. Obviously we don't build things like we used to back in the day.

Something showed up in the mail that was big and heavy. Turns out it's a spartan helmet. My buddy sent it for a late birthday gift. I have no idea where im gonna put it. I guess you could wear it too but I doubt I will. Probably just take up some space in the shop. The other day I printed a Harbor freight volt meter electrode holder. It turned out pretty good. I figured out how to add supports to prints. Now I just need to print a couple more.

A buddy of mine hit me up about taking the upper manifold off his F350. He's going to install a new fuel pump from S&S diesel. He wants to get rid of his CP4. I don't blame him Id like to do the same but right now I'll just deal with my bypass kit. My buddy is mechanically inclined but he's never pulled the manifolds off. He told me that was a *****. To make matters worse he broke his CCV hose. He's still got a lot of work to do. He's gotta pull tilt the radiator so he can pull the pump out. I watched a few YouTube videos. It's defiantly doable but it not easy. Im busy this weekend or id be helping him do it. We ll see how it goes.
My new hot water heater was installed with a water softener. My wife wanted a softener after showering at a friends house that had one. We were out of hot water for a week. I probably could have installed it but im really not the best a sweating pipes or plumbing in general. So to save time we had a new one installed by a company. The heater was mounted outside. It was protected by a cover I built to match the house. They offered to install it in the garage. I figured that would be best being out of the elements. Over all we're pretty happy with it. After a long couple of weeks of taking the instructor series classes for work I ended it with a good ol fashioned and a flathead cigar.

When I did the oil cooler/egr/water pump on the Smashed Truck I left the front end on. After pulling it to pull the engine I'm gonna do it that way anytime I need to get in there for major work. SO much easier with all the bodywork out of the way, and it's not hard to take apart.

@M.Brane My buddy was thinking about taking the cab off to do this. I told him it would probably take him longer to take the cab off than to do the work he needs to do. Good mechanics can get it off in about an hour. Ive never done it. I assume it would take me a few more hrs. I think at this point he's removed the fuel pump. Last I talked to him he was removing all the fuel lines. I think he's got another days worth of work. Maybe he'll finish today. Ive never had to take the radiator out. I could only imagine all the room you have to work with without that in the way.

That is (was?) a 2005 Super Cab FX4. It was a pretty nice low mileage truck until a giant tree fell on it.

Pulling the engine wasn't that bad once I got all the other stuff out of the way. The cab is junk so that's why so much other stuff is missing in there. Got another high mileage truck with a good cab for the swap.

@M.Brane Excellent work! Id hate to have to pull my motor out of my truck. I have the tools and equipment to do it. Ive pulled big inline 6 cummins out of my dad's peterbilt. what are you gonna do with the motor?

Update on my buddies f350. He installed the S&S fuel pump but after all was said and done he had a few leak. IT was toward the end of the day so he decided just to take it to a near by shop. I told him that it would only take him about an hour to pull the manifolds off and intakes. At that point he'd be able to see where the leak is coming from. He was going back to work for several days so I get it. The shop called him and told him that it was one of the fuel lines that gos from steel tubing (or Cooper... not sure) to a plastic flex joint. So it appears this leak was not his fault and that there's a defect on s&s's part. He's gonna get in contact with them and see what they're willing to do.

The engine from the '05 (150K) has been rebuilt, and is waiting on the stand. I will drive the Toolbox Truck ('07 93K) for a while to see how I like it for general use, and pulling the toyhauler. The Donor Truck ('04 280K) is in waiting. Whichever one I decide to keep will get the rebuilt engine, and all the fancy **** from the FX4. The other will get sold, and I might come out even not counting labor. Nothing is ever easy.IMG_1892.jpegIMG_2276.jpeg

@M.Brane those mtns look familiar. You in social? IE? Pretty nice having two trucks. Was that motor a 7.3 or 6.0?

It's been nice having the week off and getting back into the gym. Yesterday I woke up with a cough. I feel like im starting to get sick. So I took the time to do some prints since my son was at school. I printed a glove holder for the shop. Once that was done I started a print for my ring door bell camera. When it rains there's no cover over it so rain can obscure the picture. To fix this I printed a cover that mounts on the back of it. I had to modify it a little so it would fit through the mount.

I grew up in the IE, but started gradually moving west in the '80s until I ran out of land. Ended up in Ventura CO.

All the trucks are 6.0s. The redheaded stepchildren of IH/Ford's relationship. If it wasn't for the whole TTY bolt/EGR/tuner boost fiasco they wouldn't have such a bad rep. The rebuilt engine has new KDD heads with ARP studs, FelPro gaskets, stage 2 cam, Johnson lifters etc. It should be a runner for the rest of my lifetime.

Been working a lot of 12hr night shifts this month due to weather so not much time in the garage.

I used to have an account on that site (I think) way back in the F-150 days. These days just lurk a lot there when I can't figure something out.

The smashed truck had a lot of BPD parts on it. They will get transferred to the keeper. I also got a lot of upgrades from Ficm repair.

@Boostingaz that is a sweet truck. I remember when my neighbor bought his dually he was sitting in it one day I thought WTF is he doing in there then I realized it was idling. I used it to pull our 30' bumper pull once, and almost forgot the trailer was back there.

Yesterday I went to Home Depot while I was there I picked up some plants. Wife wanted some lavender plants in the back where the chickens hang out. I added two there and I have 3 near the pool area. During the summer months we get mosquitoes really bad. The bug off candles don't seem to work that well. Someone mentioned lavender will help keep them away. I added some cilantro and jalapeño to the garden. Also put some seeds in the ground. Corn, lettuce, squash, onion and tomatillo. I wanted to get them in the ground prior to heading out to az. Kids an I are gonna go see my mom. She's hasn't been feeling well lately. She's gone to so many Dr appointments without any results.

@Boostingaz Thanks were headed to the Fort Mohave area. A hell of a lot closer to CA.
@zanyad thanks, My mom is in her mid 70s lives by herself. Up until December she was very active and relatively healthy. After many ER visits and MD appointments they're not sure what's wrong. They think some autoimmune. Now she's gotta wait to see specialist. It's frustrating because I have no idea if she's telling me what's wrong is the truth. She doesn't tell me everything because she's afraid Im going to make her move closer to us. I told her a long time ago after my dad passed away that she could live out on her own as long as she can take care of herself. At the point she can't do that then she's going to live closer to me. Not to mention she's not a good advocate for herself. She had a Drs appointment a few weeks ago. I asked her what her dr said was wrong.... she never asked.
@M.Brane I wish my family lived closer. It seems when they all retired the first thing they did was move out of state. My MIL wants to move back here but she's stuck for a while. My FIL doesn't want anything to do with CA.

Got back from AZ last Sunday. Mom's doing ok. She's just gotta not over do it. Up until 3 months ago she was very active, still got her 10,000 steps a day. I think her new life is a little bit slower paced. She thinks that there's some magical pharmaceutical on the market that will make her feel better. She's in her late 70s Father Time catches up to us all. While I was there I was able to grill some stuff on the Blackstone. The thing is freaking awesome. My mom got rid of her bbq. Sadly my dad was the only one that bbq. She says she doesn't know how. My dad did a great job taking care of her but it put my mom at a disadvantage. She's not able to do things that my dad would do for her. My kids were impressed with the Blackstone. Sounds like we ll be using it more often.
Wife and I went somewhere with the family. We actually got to sit together on a plane. Typically each one of us sits with a child. If anyones interested ill post pics next week sometime.
At the moment Im working on my F250.... IT seems my truck is still leaking oil. It's at the same spot. I really don't want to take the CCV off. If that's the issue than IM going to get a bypass kit for it. Im tired of this issue. The only thing I can think of is the CCV box isn't motorcraft. It's an off brand I bought on amazon. It was cheaper and in stock. some of the reviews said that it wouldn't fit right. When I put it on I felt snug I have no idea wtf. I'll soon find out.

The family and I flew up to northern Virginia to see some family. This is the Farthest east we've been. Flew out of so cal had a two hr lay over in Atlanta then a small flight to Virginia. We stayed at an AirBnb. Decent place for 6 ppl. One morning we saw a group of deer walking through the yard. Our back yard is nothing but forest. We visited the wife's cousins place. He moved from tx to Virginia to be closer to his grandkids. He lives in a newer development. Lots of ponds around. We took the boys on a short hike. My youngest is a huge fan of turtles. He was pretty excited to see a snapping turtle in the pond by their place. One of our days we took at trip to Appomattox to see where the Civil war concluded. The Appomattox court house is ran by the parks service. It's a free museum. Very interesting place. It was about an hour from our AirBnb.

While on our trip we planned a day to go up to DC. It should have only taken us 3.5 hrs. Which is a long car ride for two kids. We left at 7am. We hit a **** ton of traffic which ended up taking use 5 hours to get there. I had no idea that DC would have been so busy. Id never seen sooooo many freaking people. This was worse than any day at Disneyland x 100. We did a guided tour that we were hoping would let us see everything we wanted. Typically the tour takes 1.5 hours to hit all 15 stops. That day it took 3.5 hours and they only did 9 stops due to the large amount of humanity and construction. Ended up just getting off the tour on one stop to see the Lincoln memorial. After that we got back on the tour and headed back to Union station to head home. It was nice to see but it was a wasted trip. Just getting out of DC took about an hour. Its lawless, scooters/bikes in traffic, ppl walking in the street... IF we end up going back we're gonna stay in DC.

One of the interesting parts I found was DC fire. We drove by one of the oldest fire stations. It's 200 yrs old. It was burned down by the British in 1812 before they set fire to the White House. As we drove by we saw one of their engines pull into quarters. Old school station they back into... no pull through. As the engine drove by I saw the Engineer had dreadlocks. Id never seen that before. Later into the tour we saw one of their TDAs (tractor drawn Aerial) aka ladder truck. It looked like a seagrave. Older rig that didn't appear to be in the best of shape. The Driver had his hat on sideways. I guess it's just a different culture out here. We're headed back looking forward to getting back to normal. It's gonna take a few days to get back onto pacific time.
