Nothing too involved today. Check engine light came on(and it seems the car went into some kind of half assed limp mode) in my old Volvo V70xc. The code was for the coolant temperature sensor.

I ordered a sensor and a thermostat. When I removed the thermostat housing, I discovered this(the one on the left)

20241210_144953.jpg

I didn't bother replacing the sensor. All is well for now and the Volvo lives to fight another day.
I'll ask a stupid question, did you find the rest of that? It would truly **** if the water pump choked on it.

Got the engine from my Z mostly stripped down. It's always had noisy lifters. I found one soft lifter so far and I'm going to spend a bit more time looking at the rest before I dig in further
That looks just like the engine in my old Nissan pickup truck. I know the Z and the PU shared a 3.0l engine at one time. Those engines were stupid noisy in the top end.

My daughter's car decided to puke a left rear brake caliper so it's in my garage. I'll order 2 rotors, a pad kit and a remanufactured caliper in the morning. I'm at a loss as to why this **** has to happen during a winter storm warning. Onward and upward.....

Fixed your misspelling....

Seriously... I would hope/assume there's going to be some netting or blocking mechanism on the inside.

Most folks put a 2x4 across at about 4 feet and call it good. Personally, I like a sheet of 3/4 plywood, or a chunk of 4' high fencing hung across the opening. Keeps the feets inside, too.

That’s funny. It was supposed to say feel like a big shot lol.

Funny you should mention the blocking mechanism. So far it’s had nothing but I plan to put a 2x4 across the opening that falls into some brackets on the doors so they won’t open if the 2x4 is installed. That, and painting the doors, is on today’s to do list.

Received engine kit for Iseki in MF1440V from Southern Global in MS. When I took this thing apart, it had only 423 hours on the clock so I didn't even LOOK at the valves - just planned on putting them back into same hole. When I started in on the head, I cleaned them up and noticed the intake faces fairly deeply grooved from landing on seats. Went to the manual and no spec given at all for face angle, so measured it up (45, not big surprise), set up the grinder and right away found them so small the couldn't stroke full width, so out come the diamond dresser to cut a relief. Figured it would take 1 or at most 2 extremely light passes, but the grooves were many times the depth I expected. In the end, the margins were below spec - and on top of that I did not want to put a valve that soft back into the engine.

Now starts the nightmare of finding parts. M-F usually out of stock or claims part NLA saying they are only obligated to support for 10 years and tractor is now 20 years old. I could get support from Iseki UK, but part numbers do not cross over so sometimes hard to get results.

There at least used to be catalogs online and paper that showed dimensioned images of valves along with keeper groove specs. I would expect that you could find something suitable that way fairly easily. And likely in a more suitable material.

I just got off the phone with Agco support, and they are trying to answer my questions about physical compatibility and materials improvements. Iseki UK service manager has educated me to expect that the parts from ANY E3CD are physically interchangeable, but I am not ready to spend $300 on parts I can't return to find out if he is right in this case.

That’s why you need at least one extra.

Of course that multiplies the opportunity for even more **** to break…
I think the opposite, multiple things dialed in minimizes things to go wrong.

oh car is dead….fire up the truck…..

her car is dead, take mine, its even more reliable than her Honda, so then I will put her Honda in shop and use the truck.

it’s a nice ‘problem‘ to have. Won’t be long til I throw the Bronco in the mix.

Not my garage but I saw this truck "crabbing" going down the hwy. Truck and trailer not in aline.
I see cars and light trucks doing this pretty routinely; the rear axle has shifted ****-eyed. Did it once with my 69 chevy PU. I had to jack it up, roll one wheel forward to get it back on the spring pin, and nurse it home...

Well, my bedroom, not the garage--but I upgraded a computer without frying it.

I bought a Lenovo Ideacentre Creator Edition 5i with a 10th gen i5 and a Nvidia GTX1660 SUPER new back in 2021. The 12GB of RAM was pretty basic back then, and inadequate now. Put it off for two years as the case was rather cramped, but later found a YT video that shwoed a complete teardown--and it was really simple--unscrew the side panel, pop off the front, release the tab on the drive caddy, and put it aside. I cleaned it about two months back, and found it was as easy as I hoped to get apart. Looked at some RAM online, but never really did anything concrete.

I was surprised to find Walmart had a Kingston FURY 16 GB set (2x 8GB) on the shelf for $50 last week, and wanted to double check if it would work. Well, I didn't, really. Today, I went ahead and bought it.

First attempt didn't work, and I thought I'd fried it. The CMOS beeper was going nuts. Well, as it turns out, I just didn't have the RAM seated well enough. A bit more pressure, and they locked in.

After that--booted right up, and it DEFINITELY seems faster.

After the best part of a year I finally got around to finishing up this 50's air pump; the UK equivalent of an Eco Air Meter. It sat outside a shop in the Highlands for god knows how many years. It was sheer luck we managed to purchase it considering we did enquire years ago to be told it was part of the building. Sadly the lower 8 inches of the body was encased in concrete, along with its cast iron base, and upon removal, someone simply pushed it over, shearing it.

I contemplated making a whole new body for it, but given its truncated pyramid shape (Straight back/sides, sloping front), that was folded out of a singular piece (difficult to find a big enough folder) with a soldered join, it was deemed easier weld in a new section to take it back to its original height. Ended up spending an age filling it, in hindsight remaking the body out of 4 pieces wouldn't have been questioned, but a god welding project none the less. Sourcing a base would be unlikely, so a new base was made up out of some folded - heavy - sheet. A new decal was made up for the face, and the unit rewired. I had a friend paint it, who used what he had on hand, hence the red not matching the vinyl I had used on the sides of the pump. The final colour scheme Is derived from a post card of the shop where the pump Is seen in the back ground.

Sorely tempted to wrap some tinsel around it and use it as a Christmas tree!

I worked on POS Element some more. In diagnosing the radio inop, I took a step back and started reading the story this car was telling me.

- Aftermarket amplifier wiring
- **** LED gauge lights
- All four struts are new w/ cheap no-name stuff
- 2005-2006 CRV wheels installed

This car was obviously modified, or at the very least had a large sound system installed, so rather than do the basic diagnosis of the radio, I pulled two door panels to find that the speakers are non-existent. Whomever sold this car to the owner undid all their **** mods and sold the car as-is. Time to order four speakers and re-test.

I drove the car to the grocery store, which is about ten miles away. Getting up to 60mph, shifting thru all the gears in the LKQ transmission, which was fine. Left-front wheel bearing is roaring, and at parking lot speeds the rear differential is groaning, which means the rear diff fluid hasn't been changed in "who-knows-how-long". I cannot wait for this car to be out of my life, but I cannot return it with glaring issues that they'll have to address in the future.

Today 16 is bare minimum; I'm bogging down with 32, But I also abuse the heck out of computers... Work comp is at 27.7 in use right now...

Eventually, I'm probably going to 32. That was the original plan, but I wanted something inexpensive as my first attempt. But, I'm going to wait and see what Sam's Club does with the display gaming PCs--to see if they disappear as soon as the "Christmas special" gaming PCs disappear or get a yellow tag "AS IS" for cheap . Most have a much better GPU and either a generation or two newer i5 or even i7 on the nicest one. These should allow me to run what I have better, and even more intensive titles than I thought were possible on this unit.

I'm honestly surprised how many (even pricey) PCs have 8 and 12 gigs. I mean, they're at least half a grand, so what's an extra $50 for an appropriate amount of RAM?

May I suggest a half-box of dynamite, some flash cord and an electric cap...........

Finished repairing wiring harness/connector issues on the POS Element (yes, the ugly one), topped off the fluids, and drove it up and down the road to test the new/used transmission. After I contacted the lady, she asked "Can you look at the radio too?, it doesn't make sound". I want this thing out of my life.
just needs the antitheft code right? pita

Hi, I'm new here. I just signed up. I like old things that were built right and built to last. One of my biggest hobbies is restoring old Weber gas grills. 1st and 2nd generation Genesis. Now I want to dabble in Vises. I picked up my first. Just a Craftsman 3.5 made in USA. Now I want something bigger and nicer. From my recent research I'm thinking a nice Reed. Maybe 4" or bigger. Think I'd like a swivel base.

Any thoughts or Advice?
i grew up in bothell, canyon park and thrashers corner areas

Today I tore down a Rotax 800 from an old Seadoo. Poor guy bought it, didn't get to ride even ONE HOUR before it quit........and it wasn't running right at that! I found compression in front cylinder a bit low but that wasn't what prompted a complete teardown. After cranking and letting off the start button I could hear a "click click". Not rythmic really but I've heard that noise a few times through the years. Compression issue:.....the piston tops show a decent "wash" pattern but see how the carbon on the left is disappearing? =water intrusion.....which also washes the lube off and the piston skirt and cylinder wall are all scored up.
Clicking noise:.....look inside that mag cup, you can see a shiny pattern from rubbing, a "witness" mark. And once I got everything off the front.......LOOK MA, NO BEARING CAGE! When that cage disintegrates the balls are free to run around the race and bang into each other........"click,clack, click".
Now I just have to tally up the total and call the customer with the bad news.......complete overhaul!
boreable right? crank rebuild or just outer bearings

It’s finally time to close in the loft wall and fancy up the stairs !! My cousin Danny is the brains behind this project. I asked him to do this last winter when we got the wall up and he’s a busy guy so he just got here now. He’s the pinnacle of what guys want in GJ. He ain’t cheap and doesn’t do things cheap. He’s giving me a family discount and I’m paying cash for his labor so he’s knocking $40/hr OFF the bill. He works 90% in high end million dollar homes and has no trouble finding work.
IMG_2706.jpeg

This is all stuff I’m capable of doing but he did in an afternoon what would take me days so it’s money well spent. He hollered out measurements and angles and I played saw operator throwing him pieces as fast as I could cut them. I asked him if he could line up the ribs on the loft and stairs walls with the ribs on the ceiling and he said “if you don’t want it that way I don’t want to do it”. Yup. I’m more excited about that than having it all enclosed lol
IMG_2707.jpeg

An afternoon of work and I’m very happy so far. I’m planning on putting a 1” varnished red oak board on top the railing to cap it and either painting the plywood white or putting a tongue and groove something of sorts over the plywood. It’ll likely get painted. I think I may have another carpet installing cousin come put some industrial high traffic short nap carpet on the steps. We’ll see.

i never really did sidework, the 1 time i did was piping & jetting on a banshee after owner/neighbor tried to it himself. of course he screwed things up himself and tried to blame me i decided it just wasnt worth it to me. i never wrenched a lot at the dealership, i'm comfortable working on my own stuff but dont need customer hassles at home as well with at work.
