^ Too time consuming.
When I'm looking for free lawnmowers, the search string is:
mower | mowers | lawnmower | lawnmowers
that way they all come up with a single search.

And I don't even bother going to "lawn and garden" or "tools" - I just search the entire "For Sale" section... that way you get all the oddballs that people list in "General" or "Antiques" or whatever.

(* upper left hand corner: note there are 4 listings in "Baby and Kid Stuff" *)

Easy peasy:
Very smart !

Found a Reed 204 at an antique store. What's a good price for these? Has the swivel base, but missing the nut to tighten it.

Good American made vises don't seem to pop up too often in my area which is why I'm asking. He's asking $150, which seems a bit high but figured I'd ask!

@NBraun $150 isn't a bad price, though I'd push for closer to $125. I'd recommend pointing out the missing swivel lockdown nut on as well as the chip on the face of the static jaw. I'd also recommend taking apart the vise and making sure the main nut is intact and not repaired.

That's about "the going rate" around here.
That seller looks to have a great assortment of vintage kitchen utensils, but the prices seem a bit stiff for 1920s-1930s Ekco stuff, unless the paint on the handles is 100% intact.

I should note that my paint curing convection oven was purpose bought for that and lives outside. Of course, I use it to cure paint, not to warm cans up. I just wish it was larger... a lot larger.
Mine too, although it lives in the garage. $10 Toastmaster convection oven's cavity is 15"W x 10"D. The bottom grill is 7.5" from the top opening. I've only had one piece I couldn't break down enough to get in there and the Texas sun took care of that.

Thanks for the response guys. Just for reference, I'm in South Dakota.

I decided to pass on it, I'd really like to find a slightly larger reed, or preferably a starrett so I'll just keep on looking!

What part of the kitchen do you store that vise in? With those other kitchen gadgets?

This may be stereotyping, or complete ignorance of your neighborhood, but
I don't think I would pass up too many items out there. It's not like you're right on the edge of a big manufacturing center where lots of vises hung out in nice dry shops. Around here anything that comes off of farm has had the life used out of it

I've seen quite a bit of vice tease over the years.....that may be the first vise tease I've seen though. :)

Ah, I was just impressed with Australia Post, I got a notification saying will be delivered b/w 8.30 -10.30 pm, arrived 9pm, they work extra hours leading up to Christmas and half a kg over max weight at 20.5kg (45lb)

It be quite good as well, no major damage/repairs, works ok, jaws been replaced, jaw supports a bit weathered, but may be cause it's a early 5..L.P, which is a nice bonus ( 1930's/40's.don't have to worry about taking any paint off either, a quick clean and into the molasses.

Thoughts on this 130 lb Rock Island 597 Vise for $150 asking price?

I currently have a Chas Parker 974 1/2 and a Reed 204 R. I really like them and want a larger version of either to restore. So this Rock Island isn't exactly what I'm looking for but do you guys think it's a good deal? Do the jaws look too far gone?

I'm filling in some history gaps, helps working out eras and sizes, and I need something to do,

I have a 3 1/2 SP which is same weight/ size as a 4L(don't like the 4L), don't mind the 5L and like bringing back the rusty examples.

Gives me a 4 1/4 Garage Special, 4 1/2 Workshop, 5L, 5 SP, Steel 5 1/4 HP, 6 swivel, 6 SQ for comparison

And your doing this wrong, only enablers on this thread as far as I can tell, what are you doing here ?

I would be curious to know what the bases are off. -just curious, don't want one

New Dawn 8" no swivel approx $1800 AUD, 6" no swivel approx $600 AUD, no new 3", 4" swivel $650-non swivel $320 AUD

Second-hand 8" fairly uncommon as you would expect, the rest you can get for good prices 1/4 and up of new prices

The big downer on buying used Dawns is the cost of a new nut ...around $200 .........the Record nut comes with a new screw for $40 ..........I also note that the revised jaw design causes the edges of the casting to bend back ,something that never happens with the old slotted countersunk screw design.

Merry Christmas to all the vise-a-holics here on GJ.
Santa is working under our vintage mid century Evergleam aluminum tree and enjoying the no name blue vise I bought for him.
(Yes, we also have the requisite vintage motorized color wheel.)
(Santa is a one of a kind hand made doll from a Grass Valley CA. woman. Her husband made the workbench and wooden tools and toys. I added the vise)

Fixed up an Erie 0C combination vise. Had some hard maple I wanted to use. Dovetailed the stand together to make a shelf Queen. Normally I restore my vises to go back to work but just wanted to do something different. Left the jaws original, tightened up the backlash and added a new handle.

3” jaws that opens to 2-3/4” and weights 23 lbs.

Excellent work on the vise as usual Kevin. Are we looking at a Sculpt Noveau black oil finish?
Your woodworking dovetail joints are superb! 🍻

Yep Black Oil from Sculpt Nouveau.

I am building two workbenches for some wealthy Islanders from trees that fell during the hurricane earlier this year. The farm has a big sawmill. I’ll use Loblolly Pine. So practicing some joint work. No screws in my workbenches. These two islanders already bought a couple of my vises and paid our community farm big bucks for my workbenches. I donate 2 hours a day in there woodworking/Blacksmith shop and garden. Daufuskie Community Farm is what it is called.

I have a soft spot for those oval-slide Eries.

colmal: Here is a page from a 1962 Paramo (F. Parramore & Sons) catalogue.
And, for good measure, a page from a 1957 Woden catalogue.

Found a pic of the other side, can't see a pipe bender thou, unless thy mean use the pipe jaws to do that ?

1734701078232.png

Wouldn't mind it thou, was using a Columbian clamp-on (Chinese made) as my inside vice till I couldn't take the fingers down a blackboard operation anymore, swapped to a 720 degree Clamp-on (CE- think Taiwan ?) a few weeks ago, Last night however while putting a small Rededa and Marples together the thing just kept slipping when I put pressure on it. keeping both to throw at someone that annoys me now, no good for anything else.

Would love to use my Record Imp, (really, really good vice) as my inside vice, but I stuffed up and got one in very good original condition/paint. need to find one I can use,

colmal: I don't see the same type of bender as on Imps and Titans. Maybe it's this boss and groove which is in line with the "pipe" jaws.

Late edit: It seems we both came to the same conclusion simultaneously. "Great minds" and all that.
