Can a Honda EU6500is be rebuilt?

We have a EU6500is with 5200 hours on it on our food truck, it quit putting out power today, the electric overload light is on if it stays running.

Can these be rebuilt or am I better off buying new?

$4400.00 plus tax where I live.

Sound like a mission critical piece of equipment, so down time has a very high cost.

In my mind repaired is very different than rebuilt. Are you really wanting a total disassembly, inspection and every worn part replaced?

Well, the generator just broke today and luckily it’s our last day selling food until maybe March and I do have a couple Honda 2200s that I’m running the food truck on right now. I just curious cost-effective if I’m just better I’m just going to buy a new one I do like the Honda so I don’t care to buy a knock off.

If the engine runs, it is either the inverter ($$$) or the stator ($$$) (Do they use permanent magnets ? If not, could be the rotor.) Until you figure out which one, you won't know what the repair costs are.

Do you need 240VAC. If not, use a pair of EU2200s or a EU3000 (IMHO the EU3200i is WAY OVER PRICED !) if possible.

That EU7000 does look like a deal that's hard to pass up... A little extra capacity might open some new possibilities on a food truck. If the 6500 is a cheap fix you could sell it or keep for another backup unit.

5200 hours is an insane amount of hours for a small air cooled engine. You got every penny out of it. Normall anything over 2500-3000 hours is good

Even if you were to rebuild it I would be worried about having issues with the inverter or generator

I used to use two of the Hondas parallel together, but I like the big one for the bigger gas tank. Sometimes we have a line for six hours straight selling food and I don’t have time to add gas.

Yeah, I found that one a couple hours ago, went to a local place to see if they would match that because it looks like there’s a rebate. They said they know nothing about a rebate so I said OK. I gotta save $500 then so I’ll buy it online.

So looking around on the Internet, I find this YouTube video describing exactly what mine is doing, so now I gotta decide do I take a gamble and change out $800-$1000 part or buy a new generator if the video is right?

I would check for any videos by James Condon on you tube for your generator . he goes in to a lot of detail with his diagnosing and seems to be the you tube guru for generators.
I do tend to agree that your unit has a ton of hours and probably should look at replacing it since you need to rely on it.

On top of that the new unit gives you a warranty where repairing the 6500 leave you with a well used peice of equipment and 100% responsibility for repairs... if your repair actually fixes the problem.

If you are sure that will fix it... you got to ask yourself, would I buy a "x" number of years old EU6500 with 5200 hours on it with no warranty (except the new part) for $1000? If yes go for it.

I would be highly dubious of that claim. The best large(69L) medium speed generator engines need a major overhaul in the 30,000 hour range.

But 13 times the usual high end of the life of air cooled engine?

The OPs 5200 hours is an outlier, but it’s a number that can be believed, especially as it’s a Honda.

But even honda doesn’t have magical metals that don’t wear

I was going to say that 5000 hours is an absolute ton of hours for small air cooled engines. Shoot, it's a lot for just about any piece of equipment. When you get the new unit, I'd probably do a compression test on the 6500is. If it comes back good, I'd would probably get a multimeter and start checking out the stator. If that stator ohm's out, I think it'd be worth a shot to shotgun an inverter into it.

Gotta wonder why it's selling for $99 bucks? Maybe they let the smoke out already... from what I've read, those are some where between hard and impossible to bench test.

We have "alternative agriculture" guys in Northern California with well over 10,000 hours on them. They change the oil while running so as not to disrupt their grow operations.

The YouTube video I found shows it running and writing just like mine so I would guess inverter.
