Took a little while to get through the stainless, but it worked out in the end. To top it all off, when I stopped at Fastenal to get some bolts, the guy gave them to me for free! Something about he wants me to tell my friends about Fastenal, yada, yada, yada.

Anyway, here she is cleaned up, but not painted. I decided to leave her as is.

That stainless bench is so clean, where is it, in your kitchen? Nice vise.

I was actually filthy before I took the picts, but I cleaned the table off for the first time in months. Easy as pie...a little Windex to get rid of the dust, carb cleaner to get rid of the oil, followed-up with some stainless polish spray.

Thanks for the compliment.

Speaking of Fastenal, I noted in a thread a year or so ago a similar experience. They didn't have the coupling nuts I wanted, I wanted longer ones, and they had some exactly like I wanted, same size and all, in the trash can where they had thrown them that morning. Last remaining box of discontinued stock! The manager was quite happy to lead me back to the trash can and allow me to retrieve all of them and take them home!

Fastenal folks are a really good bunch of people.

I used to work right next to a Fastenal store; I could not understand why every time I went out to dump my trash I kept finding boxes and sealed new bags of misc. hdw! I thought some employee was stealing the stuff with the intention of going back later and getting the goods, I asked about it and was told, nope we just throw the stuff out. Needless to say I checked every day (since they would not set it back for me) I must have hauled 50-60 lbs of hdw home this way! In the two years that I worked there.

Makes you wonder how much profit they must be making when they can afford to throw product away when it becomes discontinued? Seems like a waste to me not to try to sell it at a discounted price.....

One great looking work area. Is the vise something old? Just wondering if they make them like that anymore.

I've been trying to find out, but haven't found anything yet. They don't seem to make these anymore.

Where did it come from, and how did you acquire it????

My Dad picked it up for me at an auction somewhere in PA - not sure where. But from the looks of things, it came from a John Deere shop, since there was JD green paint all over it, as well as JD yellow.

I'll see if he has any more info...

I work in a Fastenal warehouse in Indianapolis. We have meetings every now and then to talk about the company and such. Last year, Fastenal had $1.3 Billion in sales.

As far as products in the trash, the stores are just a drop in the bucket. If you were to dig through the compactor at the warehouses and sell what you found in there, you'd be a millionaire in no time. Where all of the fasteners are kept, we have brooms and grain shovels to clean up messes. We throw away shovel fulls at a time. It's actually more efficient, both time wise and monetarily, to just throw it away than it is to sort out the product, box it up, send it to receiving, look up the part number, repackage it, label it, and restock it.

LOL,
Glad I was not the only one caught by this thread title!

Hey - That looks great, I wanted to do the same but I only have 1 6' bench and if I mount a monster like that on there I won't be able to work on the occasional "long" stuff I have to put on it. I see it's not a problem for you as you have more workbench like that. I think a removable mount for a vise that big might not be feasable either. I guess you are not worried about it?

No, not worried. I mad sure I had plenty of bench space. I have another top that sticks out like a peninsula for other stuff as well.
