Multitools - what say you? Aye or Nay?

The concept of basically a pocket knife, but incorporating pliers or similar, is not new.

The British Special Operations Executive used these Sheffield made knives during the war, and they in turn, were based on a similar Sheffield pattern dating from the previous century.
IMG_0926.jpeg

When the now famous Leatherman tool was introduced I wasn’t convinced. I knew something of tools, and knew that cast pliers were always going to be a bit second rate. I knew something of knives too, and didn’t rate the quality of the knife blade that highly.

One thing that Leatherman did get right was the size. The SOE knives, as an SOE officer of my Fathers circle pointed out, were far too big for regular carry. Leatherman tools were little bigger than a pocket knife, and that was important.
IMG_0928.jpeg

In the end, I seldom carried mine.

I ended up working as a pilot on big old turboprop airliners, and carried long nose pliers to access the fuel dipsticks, together with a reversible screwdriver. Despite the limitations of the tools however, all the engineers carried Leathermans. You could remove a couple of screws, or change a bulb without needing to get more tools, or more importantly, book out tools.

When Victorinox introduced their multitool I thought this was more like it. They were big and hefty.
IMG_0932.jpeg

And tools were much higher quality.
IMG_0933.jpeg

I had to have one, and used it for a couple of years.

The problem of course, much like the SOE knives, was that the tool was far too big and heavy.

Too big for a pocket it lived in my flight bag, until a change to a less maintenance intensive aircraft, and a desire to reduce the weight I was carrying around, led me to replace it with a small bit driver.
IMG_0934.jpeg

However, things change.

Victorinox introduced their “Spirit” tool, and I ended up owning a rental property that needed maintenance.

This time round I totally “got it”.

If I was simply decorating, this tool was just enough to unscrew a light switch or pull out a tack.

Having elderly tenants, I found I could do about 30% of the “maintenance” just with this.

And of course being all stainless was a winner too. If it (and I) got wet it didn’t matter. If I spilled a bit of paint on it, I could clean it off without damage.
IMG_0935.jpeg

And this time round we were back to pocket knife dimensions too.
IMG_0938.jpeg

Finally, I saw that one of the newer Leatherman tools went back, pretty much, to the original design, but with a few improvements.

The tools are still not as good as the Victorinox, but Leatherman have kept the price under control. For me this is a winner, as I think the size and bulk are just a bit more pocketable than the Spirit, although the two see equal “jacket time”.
IMG_0941.jpeg

After several decades deliberation, I’m voting “Aye” to multitools, but would be interested to hear others experiences.

For me, it’s all about capability while remaining compact, but I know of others who find tools such as the Leatherman Surge, with it’s interchangeable saw, to be invaluable.

A few of my colleagues got together and gave me a nice Leatherman when I retired 13 years ago. I'd never previously felt the need for one. I put it in the glove box of the car in case i needed such a tool while away from home. I've never touched it since, except to move it out of the way while digging around for something else. That's not to say they aren't useful to others, though.

I have several different Leatherman tools, but really only carry three for the most part. I have a Wingman I carry at work, mostly for the scissors but there have been times I dropped a real set of pliers from a ladder and instead of coming down, used the multi tool. When out and about outside of work I usually have a Wave+, and when I'm screwing around at home, a Surge. It seems I use the pliers quite often, but everything else, not so much. The screwdrivers are borderline useless, but better than nothing and I always have a pocket knife on my so the blades don't get touched on the multi. I also have a Skeletool, an OHT, a Supertool, and an original but none of those see much action.

I carried an original Leatherman on my Uniform belt, A supertool in my turnouts. When I left the Fire Dept for a stationary engineer position at the same company the supertool was handy for quick repairs along w/a 6" adjustable and a Klien multi tip for most adjustments or simple repairs.
On the railroad the leatherman was valuable on or off the train.
Being retired now I have my older gerber pliers that stay in my fishing bucket as it opens one handed and my leatherman sits in my bureau.

I had a gerber that I tried carrying on my uniform belt at work. Tried it a couple different times. Lasted about six months or so both times. I just couldn't see the value of it. I mostly didn't like how it rode under the waistband/belt of my turnout pants when geared up. It's been in the bottom of a junk drawer for decades.

I have a few, a Leatherman and a Gerber. I don't use tools in my job. But I am a serious dyi for just about any project. Only used the Leatherman once or twice in 20+ years and never used the Gerber.

Aye.

I've got a "James Brand" pocket knife with the scissors/prybar/pocket clip functions, thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but have grown to really like having it, used mostly for cleaning terminals and opening up wiring looms/bottles etc.

Not really a knife/pocket tool guy but it seems very well designed and decent quality.

Always had Victorinox Army knifes, but I like the simplicity of this one more (and it's UK legal)

I carry Gerber Suspension NXT every day, very handy and convenient. It has a clip on the side so it doesn’t sit at the bottom of a pocket. I don’t like something that big and heavy in my pocket. I use mine every day for something.

Most of the time nowadays my “Multitool” is a red handled Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.
The only time I don’t carry it, is if I know I eill have yo visit a building were knives get confiscated.
In the oast, I’ve carried a SOG Switchplier, a SOG Powerlock, a Leatherman Wave, a Victorinox Spirit, and a few variants of the Victorinox red handled SAKs, in a couple sizes.
The SOG multitools seem to usually have the best functioning pliers.
Ergonomically, the SOG Switchplier (first gen with aluminum handle), was best, followed by the Victorinox Spirit.
Victorinox seems to make the better accessory blade and tools.
I’d like to try one of the newer fancy Leatherman Free multitools, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I have carried a leatherman wave daily for almost 20 years. My original one lasted about 13 years. Now I have 3 that I rotate out and sent them in for warranty repair.
I carried a Wave for about 25 years when I was a sprinkler fitter, I broke a screw driver trying to pry something with it, my own doing. I contacted Leatherman about sending it in and paying to fix it, the gave me the address, I sent it in and I’m guessing they sent me a new one, it was spotless, no scratches and never sent a bill for it.

As a contractor I'm usually in reach of the right tool for the job. That said in the rare instances I have used my Leatherman rebar. But If I find my self turning a fastner with my multitool I can't help but think "if I only had a screw driver"

I have a few. Other than a trip to Europe, where I have been told that I was carrying one illegally. I have carried a multi tool less than two months of my life.

You hardly ever carry a multi tool but you carry one to Europe?

Currently carrying a Leatherman K2 for the last month. While sometimes its nice to have pliers or scissors the knife and pry bar are pretty handy for my day to day "modern man" tasks of opening amazon boxes and swapping batteries in the kid's toys.

It had a corkscrew and a knife.

As I said, I have a few. The one I carried very occasionally around here is the Wave. The one I carried for a summer in Europe is a Flair. Supposedly, the Flair is worth a bit of money.

I have a few others, but those two are the nicest ones.

I am very careful if i leave the country. Often their aws are very different. Many of my knives are very illegal in the UK, including almost every multi-tool I own.

I carried a Wingman or a SAK daily at my last job. Work gear had plenty of big pockets so no worries about size.

I have an Original Leatherman, a SAK multi tool with hex bits, a Gerber, and some other Leatherman. Never carried any of them, either in my pocket or on my belt. Not at work, not around the house, or in the yard. The Original lives in the car, the Gerber in my truck, the SAK goes when I’m traveling by airplane for more than a few days, in case something needs tweaking on a computer, camera, or hotel amenity.

The second Leatherman was a gift from my daughter as a wedding memento gift. Sits on my desk at home.

The Gerber helped remove a GS cabinet from a wall, when my regular Philips was too long.

Nothing else memorable besides some knife work, when my EDC knife gets forgotten at home.

Like the idea of them just never seem to use them. I’ve got military issue Gerbers on my range bags. Have Leatherman in vehicles etc.

I own a few, but never really carry one. Carried a SAK as a teen, and when leathermans started coming out they seemed like a big upgrade, but that roughly coincided with realising I don’t need to carry pliers/screwdrivers/knife everywhere I go.

I’ve got a leatherman skeletool that lives in my chainsaw pants, the decent sized blade with one handed opening works well, but the pliers are disappointing, no spring opening so they’re hard to use one handed.

On holiday in Europe recently, I needed something to cut bread/cheese for lunches so bought the cheapest SAK at the local shop, turns out it’s perfectly optimised for picnics.

I carried a Leatherman Wave for yrs in my daily bag and found it useful, but just felt a bit small/dainty for my hands. Gifted it to my stepson and bought the Surge with the bit set/ratcheting adapter. Will honestly say that even though I don't use it often I have no doubt it will do anything thrown at it when needed.

I carried a Leatherman or Gerber multitool on my belt for years, on and off duty when I worked at the fire department. I tried several different models over the years but really hard to beat the original Leatherman for size, weight and utility.

When I retired I went back to one of the basic Swiss Army knife models, as it is far more pocketable, and really the main needs for me are a knife or screwdriver. The model I have replaces the cork screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

I thought some of the larger more complex multi tools might be nice to keep in a bag, but once you get away from pocket / belt carry it is really easy to get a small bag with real screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench and maybe even a mini socket set. Not any more expensive, and far better tools than any multi tool. The pocket knife in the pocket takes care of knife needs.

Aye, Here is one I retrieved from the scrap bucket. Sharpened the knife on the side of the grinding wheel.

IMG_1272.jpeg

This one I bought when installing PEX at my son’s house. The knife is super sharp and the cutters work great on rubber hoses found on our cars too.

Nay

Tried years ago, mostly just ended up something else to carry around.

With the proliferation of inexpensive tools, pretty easy to keep the basics nearby.

I just carry a pocket knife and use it a lot. I use it pretty often for a screw driver too.

If I forget it in the morning it doesn't take much more than an hour before I miss it.

I don't work on stuff for a living and every vehicle, house, office, workshop or garage I own has tools...so I can't really rationalize needing one. I carry a knife pretty much always and a flashlight sometimes but that's about it.

Seems like the major complaint is size and where/how to carry them.

I have a Leatherman Sidekick which is small enough to not be a pain and comes with a clip so I can clip it to the sides of the pocket which keeps it relatively out of the way.

That said, I don't use it everyday and only carry it when I think I might need it.

In service we called Leathermans & brown-nosers “dig-its,” …the terms were synonymous.
I had the SuperTool in 90s, and then replaced with the Wave 2.0, and I think I had a “surge,” at some point, as well. The tool I used most was the flip-out flat blade in tight quarter where/when space is/was a commodity. When racks are bolted with barely enough space to fit your hand you could take out the flat, and use it sideways, pushing against the apposing hinge. This was enough to removed racks, but the driver stayed unlocked to do so.

Non the less; I am certain Leatherman 🔪 remains, to this day, more handy than Weathermen. ☔

I seldom have a need for a screwdriver. A pocket knife and a pair of XS cobras cover almost all my bases. I’ll carry my Leatherman on when hiking, but it isn’t an EDC for me.

I have a Leatherman Wave+ and I find it a great everyday tool, but it's a bit too heavy. For that reason I usually use a Spyderco Tenacious.

I received a small Swiss made multitool as a gift about twenty years ago. I found it uncomfortable to carry. When at work or home, there is always a better tool for any purpose. So I tried carrying it when camping. No luck. There just wasn't any use for it. Now it sits in a desk drawer, probably never to come out again.

I carry a small pocket knife when I leave the house but a multi tool basically never as I have a few tools in my vehicles to grab. As others mention most have too many gadgets and too bulky.

The exception is when I go fishing I take one with me. Always. The original Leatherman got it right for the size of a useful needle nose pliers yet keeping bulk down and something to cut line. The later versions too much bulk or they make mini sizes and the pliers are useless to reach deep enough into toothy mouths.

Easily open one hand these days since the handles have loosened up with years of use.
