2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

As most of you may know I started thinning down the collection last year, and my New Year's resolution for 2025 is to be even more super selective than I usually am, taking almost all of the bite out of getting skunked on my first trip of the year [Lugz 2025_01].

I spent about twenty minutes going through several stacks (roller, mid, top box) and a dozen cardboard boxes, but everything, including the stacks, was modern or not vintage enough for me and kind of dreggy at that. It all had the depressing look of someone who tried to make a go of it, never had (or took) the time to clean or properly take care of his tools, and eventually went out of business. I have found some gems in lots like that over the years, but nothing this time. Spotted and passed up a few duplicates.

I skipped a sale yesterday that had a SAE Morse/Apex 1906 patent drill bit stand.

I went to 2 today. I went to the second one because I saw Snap-on in the pictures. It is 12pt. I didn’t need it… but I couldn’t leave it behind. I also got a Leatherman Wave in the package and a Powr-Kraft adjustable. $33.

I'm still at my son's house in Pueblo, so I walked down to the weekend flea market. There are a few vendors on Friday, lots more on Saturday and Sunday, but I did find two 16 ounce ball pein hammers, a Mephisto and a Millers Falls. The Mephisto handle needs to be redone or replaced, and the "Mephisto" on the head isn't the clearest, but it's the only Mephisto hammer I have. And I don't think I have a M-F hammer either.

Clear enough to see that it's the early extremely stylistic font! I can't wait to see a close-up on the Mephisto thread. I only have one Mephisto tool, but it, too, is early, with that marking, and I will never part with it. Nice find!

My first find of the year, a set of Kraeuter GripKut Juniors

Very nice find. I don't have any, and I have only seen them in catalogs. I don't recall seeing any "Gripkut" or "Gripkut Juniors" posted on the Kraeuter thread or the Mega Pliers thread down on the Vintage Board and a search on those threads and the whole forum comes up nil. it's possible someone posted them without typing the name. The teeth are supposedly scored in a way that Kraeuter extolled as unmatched in gripping power. EDIT: I will provide more details in the Kraeuter or Pliers thread if you choose to post there.

Well, it's back!

It's about four or five months 'til the first yard/garage sales hereabouts, CL is dead in these parts and FBMP won't let me play, so I'll just watch you all packrat all the goodies until then.

I have a fair amount of old rust to remove, paint to clean and nickle to polish in the meantime....

On another topic, according to the bay's year end stats, I'm ranked in the top 2% for tool sellers and grossed $20 235 in my first full year as a reseller. Not bad for a side gig.

Not much going on in this part of the state, either. I hit a few sales, but thrift stores and used book stores were better today. And probably tomorrow, too.

The one tool I did get was a Stanley 180 parts plane, due in no small part to being a rewelded example. But, it has the depth stop, the blade is a Rule and Level, but I am not sure about the nuts.


Book wise, the Dostoyevsky compilation and Chapelle's Yacht book (1937) came from a thrift, and Howes Modern Gunsmithing (2 vols, 1941), Xenophon's Anabasis (1921, in Greek), and the radio repair book (1937) came from a used book store.

I doubt I’ll have much to report on this year, no free excavators in sight. Only update is I’ll soon be my own boss. Have a 7 figure truck in the beginning stages of being built and will hopefully take delivery in the spring.

My Pickett is hanging on the wall beside my desk. I may be of the last generation to be taught to use one, and of the last generation to have forgotten how to use one.

Me too,

One of the managers about 35 years back mounted his slipstick in a Shadow box, with a "in case of emergency, break Glass" on it. This was at the height of calcualtor development and PC's were getting common.

Can a Calculator be Vintage?

I know most people tend to use the calculator function on their phones these days but most of us remember using calculators. Well, I still use this Sharp Scientific Calculator that I've had for about 40 years.

Looks like yours needs a recalibration--from where I sit I see 7.9!
Besides, Slip Sticks are the manual calculator equivalent of Latin. Whiz Wheels are where it's at!

Thanks! I'm always on the casual lookout for All-Clads. I think I'm up to 46 bucks in replacing my cookware with nicer stuff. I'm still using the hand-me-downs from Granny and Mom so I think it's about time.

I know what you mean. I still have some pots, pans and Corning Ware casserole dishes from my great aunt who passed when I was a teen in the 80s.

The Corning Ware is my absolute favorite stuff to use for reheating leftovers, whether in the oven or microwave. The covers are the best part (no splatter), and it's almost impossible to have food that doesn't clean out easily (you'd have to really burn something).

We've "upgraded" our primary pots and pans (although in hindsight, the quality of the older stuff was better), but I'll never stop using the Corning Ware!

I, also, look for All-Clad at estate sales. On top of All-Clad, I look for high end knives (mostly German Wusthof, French Sabatier, and Japanese MAC) and Pyrex.

Granny was a cast iron hater! I have a medium sized stack of cast iron and only really use like 2 or 3 pieces.

I still use the Pyrex, and Corningware I was given and found in garage sales. I always look for full sets but I'm happy with my mis-mash on that front.

Passed by a garage sale today and grabbed a 6 dollar bag of 1/4” drive. The top group is sk wayne and the bottom is craftsman =v=. Not much, but happy to break the 2025 ice.
