Had a buddy come over lat monday and we knocked it out in about four hours . Span is 23 feet and Depth is 6 foot for a total of 138 SF of additional Light Storage. I dont think that we rated it for more than 15 PSF, Maybe some one can run the numbers

Rear span is Doubled 2x12x24 sitting on carrier studs down to the sill plate. Joists are 2x8 16"OC on joist hangers off the back of the 2x12 run up to the front of the garage is a 2x12x24 tied into the header over the door and then layed on the top of the 2x12. Decked it with 1/2" plywood. Not a bad deal i think. I got 1/8" deflection at center point with about a 200lb man load on it.

well done, will give you lots of storage. Similar to what I did with mine.

Looks good! I thought about doing this with mine but I'm a little worried about the shadow...

just sink some lights in on the underside of the loft area. if you're not going to finish off the bottom side (leaving framework exposed), put some t8 fixtures up inbetween.. should be plenty of light

Saw a friend's garage where he used a space kind of like that to store things like ladders and ramps. Brilliant use of space if you have it.

sorry to resurrect this old thread but it is very close to what I want to do. Have a 20 foot span over a one piece double garage door. Depth is about 8 feet. I read this thread and do not understand how to attach the beam across the front of the garage. I have drywall so I assume that there has to be some huge header across the garage door span . Would i attach my double 2x12x20 to this with lag screws or some other way?

Also the rear 2x12x20 ..what is the best way to support that? Seems like cutting into the drywall to find studs but from there what is best method?

thanks!
