Just picked up this unused Record 3VS swivel vise off Marketplace for $40. Came in the (very weathered) original box. It wasn't stored properly, so there's some rust on the bare metal that needs to be cleaned off. Excited to clean this bad boy up and put it to use!

Nice vise! I had one in the past.

Could you please check the box and see if it says where the vise was made? Also, does it mention the company “Irwin” anywhere on the box? Years ago the these vises were labeled as “made in England “ on the casting. Then Irwin purchased Record. I believe sometime later the “made in England” was changed to “Sheffield, England” and at some point manufacturing was sent to Asia. Thanks

I saw another thread on here about that after I bought it! Says Made in England on the box. Can't find a date anywhere on the box.

yes - the instantaneous grip of this type was invented and patented by J Parkinson of Shipley, Bradford, UK in 1884 - called 'Perfect' - I think their patent would have lasted 17 years back then - around 1900 a raft of other makers such as Woden and Record started producing near copies -- the one in this catalogue looks very much like a Parkinsons Perfect from around 1920+ but they didn't make sizes below 3.5 in and the numbering shown was generally used for non-QR Handy vises
This is the Jan 1932 version of the Improved parallel

LOL, and they skimped on a pic of the Dawn, just saying it's like the Woden. And a Yost a US version of the UK patternmakers ??

I've been down a few Rabbit hole the last few days, found a gorgeous April, 1915 Mcphersons catalogue, excellent pics, all belt driven, a couple of steam and even a treadle lathe -US,UK, and AUS made, 1736497834236.pngno vices that I could see however,

Any idea where I should post it, anyone interested here ?

Thankyou, I had seen that ,but had just seen the more modern lathes and, looked at the end, not the start of the thread - being slack or more to the point I was pretty much over researching by that point.
Rabbit holes 🕳️🐇 rapidly become mazes.. check any OCD tendencies at the door to the libraries whether in person, or online.
📚🔍 Oh the woes of hunting info & documents for cool stuff, amongst other cool stuff… 🙂

I worked on the Parker #4 again today...

I finished the screw retaining plate...

20241120_131449.jpg

20241120_131445.jpg

20241120_131652.jpg

I need to get a more appropriate bolt.

I also found a piece of 'mystery metal' rod and made a replacement jaw pin for the missing one. I tapped it in place, filed the end to match the jaw angle, then used a ball peen hammer to mushroom the end...

20241120_140205.jpg

It turned out ok...

Now I need to machine a new handle... if anyone can give me handle dimensions, I would appreciate it... I would like to make it as close to the original as possible.

I found time to work on the Parker #4 again today...

I had bought a couple of these 1½ inch steel balls that McMaster advertises as 'easy to machine'...

20250110_131413.jpg

Well... they are not... so I fired up the O/A torch and made them bright red...

20250110_110138.jpg

...then let them air cool...

20250110_121936.jpg

...and gritblasted them clean.

20250110_122810.jpg

That did the trick... they are now soft enough to chuck up on the lathe and drill and tap ½"-20 TPI holes in them...

20250110_125312.jpg

Next I cut a piece of ¾" diameter 4140 steel rod to 15 inches long and turned and threaded the ends to fit the balls...

20250110_143921.jpg

20250110_143937.jpg

...making a handle for the vise.

20250110_152731.jpg

This was a good way to spend an icy afternoon here in the deep south...

Wabeco 80 - “Simalit 70 - ahead of time” the latter referring to the aluminum cast body. Material developed by Wabeco and smelters back in the day. The jaws are screw-on type made of steel.

My Dad bought this new back in the day, I’ve known this vise for all my life. Needed a bit of ”love”.

As it was.

Taking it apart, thoroughly cleaning it and putting it back together.

Finished. I‘m not going to “mess” with paint on this, I think it aged nicely.

Kind regards,

Wasn't sure why I always click on this thread.
Nostalgia? We had an old vise on a bench downstairs.
Cool tools?
Then I remembered...
In addition to some other work,
I was having a particularly hard time removing something. Nothing would work. Inspiration.
Took the vise off the bench.
Tightened.
Voila!

May need to redo that old wrench poster

A friend of mine asked me to help her with this Craftsman vise that was her dads. Where do I look to find numbers to Identify and figure out the date for this vise? Also, would this have been Red or another color? Thanks for any help!

They are really cool. Completely distinguishable.

Look on the very nose of the main screw, for the model No, and fully closed, on top of the slide sticking put for the date.

Very desirable vise, likely a 4" wide jaw. if so a 5191, if its 3-1/2" its a 5190
Thanks, it does have a 4" jaw and I found the numbers

Oh my did I score this afternoon. I asked about this add on market place about a tool chest, although I wasn’t really interested in the box but the vise on top!
IMG_6001.png
I asked about said vise without the box and he said that’s a small one I have a bigger one if you rather. I said I’ll take them both how much do you want? $20 for the small one and $40 for the bigger one. I said I’m on my way!! 15 mins away mind you. The add and two top view pics he sent are all I saw. I FINALLY FOUND ONE a $20 baby bullet with original paint and looks unused. Oh yeah and the other vise was an Athol 13, broken but!!

So do the numbers translate April 8 1957. The number looks to 4857, is readable with a little water on it.

Also, what color would this vise have been when it was new? THANKS for the help!!!

Yeah have that page, although, I'm murky with that era think that page is later than 1930's

This is a 1932 MacPhersons ( No Dawns apart from a woodworking in 1933 McPhersons )

1736372596116.png1736372645907.png1736372675381.png

This catalogue threw me again, as every other thing I have points to that vice being 1920's

1920's vices - very uncommon - Dawn on the dynamic, maybe a 2000's ish with that also, but that's it all the rest have Dawn on the static.

1736373234297.png1736373269788.png1736373304150.png

Got a few ready to patina this week

This is a late 20's,early 30's - the front ears on the static were discontinued around the start of 1930's, no Dawn on Dynamic but doe's have the early dots b/w letters and front ears kinda a in-between model with the size on the static as well. Also note the rear edge on the dynamic and has the non-rounded handle.

1736375001480.png1736375035102.png1736375095310.png
Further to the late 20's early 30's vice, I got given another today, has the same squarish handle I wasn't sure was original-I am now as both the same and missing the grooved cut like the later models ( grooved cut - 1930 ish to 1969) Todays example is really good for it's history, but that is about it, the static jaw ledge is broken and ledge removed to form a , let's say 'cast in jaw '

1736830153999.png1736830194543.png

And another example of my excellent business skills, didn't want to buy another 2, but I have them to restore/repaint and will return them when completed free of charge - :)

OOh and an Lunacy update as well
After watching a lot of how to's and such, I'm buying a 1736832365018.png, basically to help with my vice restores -washers mainly, and a few handle ends and smaller screw heads, I'm sure I'll find other uses when I finish the 60 plus washers I need now.

I'm going to employ the tried and tested "wing It" methodology to start with :) ,I'll eventually get to 'COL" standards, I don't need to get ridiculously fussy on setups and such. that will happen naturally as I learn.

1736831174296.png

1736831208370.png Paid $998.99 AUD, 3 hours ago (including $69 freight)

I found this at an estate sale on Saturday. I didn’t see any markings. Anyone recognize it?IMG_0227.jpeg

I saw this in your group post. It looks like my "Cole like" junior vise, but with ears. (Edit Oops, mine has ears too) Couple of different flavors out there, search for Cole on this thread for possible ideas
