A little update from Nick on the F355 heads:

The machinist has finished cutting the new register for the valve guides. I asked for pictures of the process to share with you and for use in my videos, which I've attached here. In the photos, you can see the original small factory chamfer compared to the much larger one they’ve machined. The factory sintered valve guides don’t have a shoulder that sits on the head, but the new manganese bronze guides include a shoulder with a 45° taper on the bottom side. Early 355s with factory bronze valve guides already have this feature machined into the head. Since your car is a later model, the machinist needed to add this feature to your heads.

The replacement valve guides were installed as of yesterday. Next week, he’ll perform the valve job, clean the heads, and handle final assembly. He’s confident that the heads will be ready to ship back out next week.

I was able to complete the bulk of the fabrication and more importantly, the problem solving for my mercury columns. I still have plenty of touch up/paint work to do, however, it is complete enough that if I needed to throw it together for use I can. Meaning, by the time I have the engine back in and running I will easily be finished obsessing with the details and we won’t be waiting for it. I went into the project with a VERY loose idea and no real plans on how I was going to execute it. So it’s nice that the “thinking” part is out of the way, now I just need to finish the “doing” part.

Walnut that is contemplated to be used on the next two barometer stands. Hope to configure the “crotch wood” in the arms of the holder. Going to reduce the size of these cants and cook them in the oven @ 200* for 3-4 hours. This process will kill any bugs that might be living in the wood. More to follow:

Odis, a belated Happy Anniversary and especially your marriage lasting as many years as there are weeks in a year. At this point I notice a change in time. Our early years of married life were marked by anniversaries clearly 365 or 356 days apart. As the decades passed the days fly by so fast I feel like they are much closer together. My calculator tells me our next one is 63 and I hope to remember to celebrate it.

Some progress on the last two barometer stands. Bases need another coat of Arm - R - Seal and more machining work to be completed on the stands. Maybe finish up this weekend…or not…

If interested, the drawing for the barometer stands:

Made the 3 hour drive to Nick’s shop today to detail the rear suspension and engine compartment on the F355. Had a nice time visiting with Nick while cleaning on the car. At least now when Nick records the installation of the heads, cam timing, etc, I won’t be distracted by looking at “dirty parts” for the car…

NICE job on the clean-up!

I really admire Nick's ethos of not wanting anything he works on to look like it was worked on.

Yes, you are correct. Contact him if you would like to discuss his action plan when takes on work.

Awesome job on the suspension and engine bay detailing ODIS.

Thanks Mike. A good day. 3 hours working on the car and 6 hours on the road.

Odis, would you share the machine shop used? Are they local here in the PacNW? Beautiful work! I may have some Porsche heads to send them next winter...

Hi and good morning, Andrew.

Shop is located in SoCal. The fellow that owns this shop only works on Ferrari engines.

For Porsche work, recommend Jack Morris who is located in Spokane. Send him a note with your specific needs and time lines. He is busy, so it is important to get in the queue early.

Thanks for your post!

Thanks Odis. My heads are 928, so they likely have more in common with your Ferrari than air cooled Porsches. :D
I'll check in with Jack.

Thought that might be the case. Fellow in our local P-Club has a couple 928s and believe he has had extensive work completed on them. Will ask him for his recommendation for head service.

Thanks for continuning to post on the ongoing Ferrari work and looking forward to see what you do with that beautiful walnut!

No problem on the Ferrari updates.

Gave up on the walnut as it is too hard to machine with the equipment (my poor skills) that is in the shop. Will save the remainder for something else.

Thanks for your note.

The transaxle completed for the ‘55 Porsche Speedster. A thing of beauty. Correct down to the fasteners:

As for the engine, waiting on some repair work on a few of the cooling tin items. Jack Morris who is doing the work will run the engine and tune prior to delivery. No rush.
