I have a lease that runs until August 1st, so a little less than 6 months, I would like to be out sooner, but honestly it will be a struggle. I can't leave things behind or he will want me to pay rent like everything is there, so big or small, I am taking it all...

I am going to start packing up things that I do not need right now, then I am going to finish a couple repairs on things that I will be using for the actual move, but realistically I won't be able to start moving anything of consequence until April. We are getting more snow tonight, then a couple more storms next week, looks like one could be a pretty heavy hitter too. I am going to have to really start my auction list and work on getting things were they can be hauled, that is April 17th, so I would need to get stuff there the week before that. I have a small list right now, but my biggest hurdle is the muv-all trailer needs the rams rebuilt and Perk really needs the clutch/transmission swapped. I am working on lining up help for that right now. I think the Tru-Hitch will need some attention too, I am going to use that to haul most of the trucks out. I have tire chains that should fit Perk, but I do not have a ton of extra space right now, so I am going to have to work on that for sure.

I'll be a touch harsh here, cause I want to see you survive this mess. I've been in your situation with crooked family, and I'm here, happy and comfortable, n they're not.

Those are all nice to haves and just excuses for not clearing out. This stuff you're saying is setting yourself up for failure. You cannot give yourself any slack in your situation.

There's an old saying about **** it, Run it. It applies here. Nurse your junk equipment, as it is, so you can be out of there before the summer. Drop the stuff in your yard and tarp what needs to be out of the weather. Later on, after you're out, you'll have all the time in the world to fiddle with stuff. But right now, just get gone.

Good luck, we're pulling for ya.

I’m too far away to help but it would be cool to see a big GarageJournal party help you move everything in a couple of weekends.

My only advice is sell/scrap things in one move, don’t move them to the Salvage Garage and then sell/scrap.
Memorial Day or July 4th at Strouty's!

The LAST think you need is a group of us crotchety GJ OCD MF-er's "helping" you pack and move.

You need to find a herd of "strong of back, weak of mind" helpers to get it done!

Cheers

Kay, unfortunately the Muv-All trailer is pouring fluid out of the rams, I have waited way too long and I know it will leave me stranded in the worst way, so I can't chance that. As far as Perk, I can wait, but if I wait, I am doing all the work outside, Perk won't fit in the Salvage Garage. Since I am snowed in and we have two more storms this week, I think I can do a bit better than a tarp outside, I have a short box trailer that is about emptied out, that will help things a bit, just because of the Hill and the driveway conditions, I am going to start at the SG and clear space to start bringing things over. This dang "winter" thing is really going to make trouble for everything.

Quite a few Main-uhs on here, maybe we could make a dent in the project?

Can you quit the day to day stuff your father has you doing and just focus on the move?
No, I still have to deal with the business stuff, I will limit the superfluous **** as much as possible. He will try to thwart me any way he can, at this point I am walking a line that I would prefer be a bit wider.

First step is to clean out the wood shop as he is having his "crew" come to replace the roof and I don't trust any of those guys. After that I have to get the house cleaned out, actually have to take the front door off so I can get my shower/tub enclosures out. :(

There is a lot of stuff that will be repurposed for the current house, the one I have been neglecting as we were supposed to be moving to the Hill, it was going to get repaired after that. Oh well, life happened and I am moving forward.

I am at the Salvage Garage assembling shelving that I bought for the house at the Hill, but now it is going into my old office space so I can put all my movies away, going to be a while before I get to those again, but it is the safest place I have.

I took stock of all the cabinets, got dimensions for most of them so I can see where things will go when they hit the SG. I may have freed up enough space that I won't even need to buy a trailer or conex, that is making me feel a lot better. Tomorrow I am going to dig out a couple trailers and some of the running vehicles, I think the Blurb will be useful to drive back and forth with the more delicate boxes of stuff. Was initially thinking I would just rent a U-Haul trailer, but I think the blurb will be simpler, plus if I am gentle, I can haul the small dump trailer with bulky stuff in it (shuddering transmission). I am also going to dig out Clark, would be best to make room to put it inside, the cold weather makes the hydraulics act up pretty bad. I don't think it will be too hard to make room for it and then I have a forklift that is ready to go at the SG, one that isn't going to get stuck.

How many cylinders are on the trailer? How difficult does it appear to get the cylinders out of the trailer?

I just did a lift cylinder on my skid steer. Of course it was the second cylinder within about 5 months. When I did the first one, I did a number of hoses as they were a ticking time bomb. I was preemptive enough to order a pair of seal kits.

The hoses were a treat, but I'm glad they're done. The gland nut on the cylinder is always fun. The hot wrench makes a huge difference to pop them loose. The trick is not so hot that it melts the plastic seal pieces.

It is nice to not be squirting hydraulic fluid everywhere.....

Make the plan for the trailer, and work the plan....

They are going to be a *****, the pins are stuck, will have to cut the pins, then make new ones. We already tried to do it once, then I kept using it. I have things figured out so that they can be removed and I can still move the trailer around the yard, so I would pull the rams, get it out of the way, then fix the rams and make the pins. We just got about a foot of snow and it looks like we are going to get another couple feet by next week, so this is not something that is going to happen for a bit. I am going to try and put the tire chains on Perk, but I am not sure they will fit the tires, I forgot that they are the 315 series instead of the standard 11R22.5, just a little taller but wider.

Got the basics of my shelving assembled, also put the roll around "shipping" desk together, it was for my eBay stuff, but that is kind of on hold right now. I can roll it into the old office and pull it out when needed. Still have to bring over some more shelving and supplies, but at least it will be out of the house at the Hill. I would love to be able to get things so I can do some selling on eBay as well as Marketplace, we will see, it is the right time to do it, but other than the money, most of the stuff I would be selling is so small, it just won't help out with gaining any space. I know that I can sell stuff on Marketplace, but half of the stuff is buried in snow right this minute.

So moving big stuff is out of the question right now, and that's probably fine. Focus on the smalls, as that's really more of the problem and will **** more of the time too... sorting, loading, unloading, putting away.
Figure out what works for you for a cadence of moving stuff, and stick to that. Maybe it's Friday's, maybe it's Monday's, but pick a day, and on that day, you take whatever smalls are ready to move. That would give you mini-deadlines and keep you from getting hung up on a particular small.

It sounds like you made some progress on deciding where you're going to put some of those smalls, so that's great! Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough!

One other thought I'll put out there... for all of these smalls, would it make sense to hire a moving company? The reason I bring that up... I also struggle with dealing with the small items.... it *****! When my wife and I moved from the US to China for work, and then 5.5 years later, moved from China back to the US, we had professional movers both times (paid for by the company). Watching them work to pack and move is amazing... they have zero emotional ties to anything, so it goes in a box, packed carefully, labeled and hauled out... and they are fast!!!
If your dad really gets to you, and you want to get your stuff out of there fast, that could be a plan B. They could likely store it for you and you pull stuff from it as you have time.

It may also be helpful to only plan 1 week at a time when it comes to the smalls. That would keep you from getting overwhelmed, and yet still keep the pressure on yourself to get it done.

Are you planning to try to do most of this moving without your Dad seeing this? Or have you already tipped your hand that you're getting out of there?

Regardless, keep working at it, and best of luck to you! Whatever you do, that's the right path, regardless of what we think.

He was the one who told me that I was out, I guess he could forget, but I am betting he thinks I will still be in the shop even if he does rent out the house. Honestly, he will most likely just think I am "cleaning up" until things are really gone, then he will figure it out. No matter what, I am not spending another winter at the Hill knowing that I can't trust anything he says.

As for the smalls, a lot of it is going to get packed, but I won't have a place to unpack it yet, labelling will be the most important part of that process. I will have to start trying out my QR code system, at least this can be a trial run for that.

I have a cabinet and one tote of movies so I can get an idea of how the shelves can be setup, after tonight I should be ready to bring all the movies over from the Hill.

The Blurb is plugged in and so is Perk, the cord on Perk was falling apart from heat and corrosion. Still seemed to work fine as I could hear it heating up.

I had a late night, buddy stopped by and we talked for three hours, guess we need to catch up more often. Before I headed to the Salvage Garage from the Hill I did get Perk out of the snow bank as well as the Blurb. Dug out the tire chains too, need to try and get those in tomorrow. I have a lot to do before the next batch of snow comes through, temps are going to be colder too, so that should slow me right down.

Are you going to have to get a daily driver when you move out of the Hill or will you still be able to use the company truck?

I don't hardly use the company truck anymore, only reason I use it is to plow.

I do need to get the Volvo XC70 operational though, diesel is killing the financial vibe right now.

Today will be a good day if I can just get the block heater installed in the military forklift, that will free up some shop space for sure. I can already tell my to do list is five times longer than my available time, so I have to cut it back a bit. Also, the clutter and mess has cost me time and money, I ordered the block heater a month ago (or more) and it is in limbo now, so I am picking one up at NAPA as I spent an hour looking for it already and could have had it installed if I just knew where it was. :(

We got lucky last night, 2" light powder, blew it off with a Ryobi 40 volt leaf blower
in about 30 min. I'll will just watch TV with the wife the rest of the day.
That is lucky, I don't think that luck is going to transfer this way though. We have snow coming in late night or early tomorrow morning, they keep adjusting it of course.

I got the block heater installed on the Military forklift, the 3500 is loaded for a trip to the Salvage Garage, but I am going to swap the batteries first, I have new ones that were supposed to go in about a month ago, just been too busy. I am using the older ones to put in the Blurb, it had semi junk ones that have now frozen, so they are totally gone. I still haven't gotten the chains on Perk yet, might be "after the storm" thing, I am just running out of time. My plan is to have the Blurb in the heated shop tonight, that will melt all the snow and ice off it, then it will be ready to start hauling things to the SG on a more regular basis, at least as long as the trans holds up.

After this storm, I should be able to really get things prepped for the big one, that should be a mess.

I figure it needs to be done regardless and if I get stranded because of something I knew needed to be repaired, it could take more effort than the actual repair, so I am just moving through things and dealing with them as I can.

I am over at the SG now, got to go and get some diesel fuel for the 3500, then head back to the Hill so I can move things around before the snow starts. Going to try and get everything except Perk inside so I won't have snow or ice to clear off them. This storm may turn to rain at the end, then freeze up again. :(

I really want to bring another load over to the SG tonight, but I am not sure that is time well spent right now. I need to pick up some supplies for tomorrow (groceries) and the Ford plow is essentially out of gas, was going to do that on my way home. In theory I could make one round trip with a decent load to the SG from the Hill and still get to the grocery store before it closes. I guess we will see how I feel and what the radar looks like.

I got one trailer up the Hill, the other one had sunk into the ground a bit and the jack is no good, so I had to leave it down there for now.

I found some tire chains that I think will fit the bigger Hyster forklift, if they do, then I can bring it down and lift the trailer up and block the jack legs up. All depends on what the storm brings and if the chains do fit.
