I found this IR Type 30 languishing at an auction yard in the rain. The tag was missing and it took multiple trips to the yard to finally make a purchase on this. It kind of looks like it might have been used as an anchor on Noahs ark but I am hoping to get it to a point where it is churning out enough CFM to run a blast cabinet, die grinder, spray gun and other myriad of pneumatic tools. Next order of business is finding a secondhand reciever that does not blow the budget out of the water.

So I pulled the heads off. What appears to be cardboard from cereal boxes has been used as gasket material. The first stage head is slightly rusted with a bit of pitting around the the centre of the head and towards the finger valves. Second stage looks really good considering it sat outside in semi-equatorial conditions for who knows how long. I bought this thing based on the fact that it turned over freely and hissed and puffed at the same time.

I pulled the cylinder offs and those bores look to be in working condition. No scoring or visual signs of excessive wear. I actually had to disassemble the entire top end just to be able to get this off the back of my truck into the garage. I took all the loose pieces and soaked in a simple green and water solution for a few days.

Yesterday I cut new gaskets by hand from a sheet of gasket material and I tested some thinners on the paint (if only I knew someone with a compressor to run a sandblaster haha :)) It seems to be some sort of 1 pack paint and has started shriveling off the barrels. I will scrape the worst of it off and then get in with abrasives to prep for paint.

As to model, the data plate reads Type 30 5&3 x 3 1/2. I believe this is then a model 235. I see there is a port for some plumbing from the top of the 2nd stage cylinder. There is also a port on the side cover of the bottom end. Should these two be connected to each other?

I seem to remember that the gaskets for the heads are metal/composite 2 layer gaskets. The head on the small bore (particularly) gets very hot. Not sure regular gasket material will hold up. I purchased my parts from I-R. Good luck! I have a T30 that God only knows how old it is but it gets the job done for me and I've had it at least 15 years. They don't make them like this any more.

Garlock 3000 type works pretty good for the head/valve gaskets.

I found karropak(ceral box) style would get too hot and eventually fail if running a sandblaster.

I will have a look see if I can find Garlock 3000 material. For now the gaskets have been cut from Cranflex 1.6mm gasket paper

I could probably get replacements out to me in a few weeks (No amazon where I am) and I do heed your input that the second stage is going to get very hot. Might as well give it a shot.

Yeah that looks similar to felpro karropak... It's fine for everything except the head/valve gaskets. With heavy use eventually the heat/pressure will make it fail. I tried coating it with the copper gasket spray as well with no luck. Sandblasting would make it fail usually within a few hours of heavy use.

Garlock 3000 or similar will be much better, and much harder to cut out, suggest using the ball peen method. Klingersill is what IR used or maybe still users in their ssl3 type compressors. Make sure the thickness is the same.

Thanks for the input on the head gaskets guys. I will definitely make a plan to get some aramid fibre based gasket material of correct thickness. I still need to source a motor, reciever and a VFD to take 220v single phase and convert to 3 phase for what I think will be a 4kW motor.
