Insulation dilemma.

OK,
Here is my dilemma. My pole garage is finished and currently I’m working on my lighting but my next project is insulation especially because of the impending winter. My original plan was to put 1” sheathing on the inside, stud the garage out in-between the polls, use R13 and then drywall it. The only thing that bothers me is that the polls are 4x6 which means in essence I will be losing a foot of width and length in my garage. It’s not a large space and I need all the room I can salvage. My brother’s idea was just to put the 2” sheathing up and leave it at that, leaving me with more room.. My father has told me to frame it out with no sheathing and use R19 then drywall. The garage is in thick woods and is not subject to high winds. The winters are usually not too bad, last year we had snow but it was only just below freezing. I will also be closing in the trusses and making a ceiling at 10’, that will be insulated too.

IMO, its too late to do what you should have,which would be to fill in the spaces between the wall girts with 1 1/2" foam sheet,put a good reflective foam wrap over that,tape it,then put the sideing on.This way you would be useing the wasted space outside the posts for insulation.Then you could frame vertically on the inside with 2x2 on 24" centers,fill those voids with 1 1/2" foam,and drywall. At this point you are just about stuck building a 2x6 stud wall between the posts and use r-19 faced,then a carefully installed poly vapor barrier,then the drywall.It is much easier and more thermally efficient to create the air infusion layer on the outside ,directly under the outside sheeting,whatever it may be,than to try and piece it together on the inside,and without it,you can have r-90 in a metal sided building and still be drafty.

I guess I really dont understand the reason to worry about the 2" of space either lost or gained between the posts though.

I'd put the 1 1/2" sheet insulation between the girts, (pole building, corect ?) After that was done, I'd frame in the walls and insulate with fiberglass. You can buy R15 that fits in a 2x4 wall or R19 for a 2x6 wall.

Posting a picture of what you have, tremendously helps guy figure out what you're trying to do.

I understand what trbomax is saying. I did do the double bubble on the roof, but its to late now to go back and do the outside walls. I was kind of thinking Eric's idea would get me good results. Right now I have some tools boxes and parts washer (brothers) and blast cabinet (Fathers) in the garage and some space is saved by putting them against the wall and it saves a little room. These tools are on loan until I get my own but it gives me a good idea of space. But if I want to be warm this winter I need to insulate. My building is not large and I have big plans for it.

You could still fit 1 1/2" foam between the girts before doing anything else.If you cut the sheets 1/4" small all around,then use canned foam to "weld" up the gap. That would be close to an exterior, under the steel wrap.

Sounds good, I like that idea. When the lights are finished I'll get to work on it.

Yes I did, but I have not updated it since doors and electric. I'll have to get on that. Its slow progress since I'm doing this whole thing paycheck to paycheck casue Im too cheap to go into my savings!

Nothing wrong with doing it that way.A lot of people would be better off if they did!
