Yesterday, I decided to make a day of it, and travelled down the length of the state to a semi-monthly flea market and check out a few estate sales. And while I was hoping for more junk at the flea, and less soap, I did find some great stuff:

Bonney and Snap-on body hammers, Eldi pedal wrench, Hinsdale and Herbrand wrenches, and a complete set of Brown and Flather boring bits. Quite happy to find those! Saw a bit of good stuff, including a prewar Craftsman top box, but have sworn off buying any chests for a while.

The two estate sales were a bust, but I stopped at an architectural salvage place and found a nice Wright speeder from WWII, and after that swung by a thrift store that has interesting books and picked up a collection of Thomas Manns short stories and a pre-WWI thriller.

A good day, all in all.
Dang, you passed on a long c top chest? I would certainly have bought it😳. But I get you not wanting to haul it around as they can be a bit stout to say the least

Estate sale ($60): Yamaha YAS-23 Alto Saxophone.

Really good condition. A service invoice from 8/23 indicates that it had the neck cork and pads replaced, dents removed, and sanitized. The real surprise being that my wife can play and sounds pretty good on an alto sax. 26 years and who knew that I'd married an alto sax player.

I can't imagine that the service work on that sax cost anywhere near as low as $60!

I also couldn't imagine parting with a musical instrument from a family member (unless it was a family member I was trying to forget ever existed, in which case I'm sure I wouldn't be their estate executor / heir...).

$220 worth of work. I also have a soft spot for instruments.
Makes sense, as I missed that they only changed to a flat top (like yours) in 1899.
Researching Millers Falls eggbeater drills is one of the reason I ended up here at GJ. Came for the eggbeater drills, stayed for the community : )

Don't know if it was worth it yet. Paid $30 for this box of actual junk and a couple tools. I just wanted the pry bar. There is about 19 pounds of brass made up of old lamp parts and a big roll of sort of aluminum sheet roll / flashing? I hope I have my money worth in scrap value. Maybe I'll find out tomorrow since I have a few things to add to the mix.

@JMP : Those brass cones almost look like the chimney cone of the very early Coleman (and others) Arc lamps:

If they were, they'd be worth a pretty penny to the right folks.

I would say they a fairly generic stamped cone. Maybe I'll do a little more research.

A lot of that looks like brass plated steel. I hope you didn't get taken.

Regardless, I'd be looking for what it all goes to - as Timm said it could be worth a lot more than scrap to someone that needs them.

Post some pic of them and what came with - it may provide leads.

A couple small pieces weren't brass. I used a magnet and hit a couple pieces with a file and looked like yellow brass. I messaged a lamp restoration group and they suggested it might sell well as a lot on eBay and was slightly worth more than scrap / worth saving. I have one person interested in repurposing a lot of this.

Getting ready to go pickup this pallet of junk, I thought it would go cheap but no, hammer price was $80.
What Im interested in is the old machine lights in the lower right corner.
Looks like there's an old DRO that's likely junk as well. Probably will be throwing most of this stuff out. Hopefully there will be a few other hidden goodies. I know this isn't a garage sale, it was an internet auction but I thought it would still fit here.

This is the right place Elmer.

At least one of the 3 lamps appears to be a Dazor.
OK thanks Outlawmws. A Dazor, I assume that's good. I just want some old lights that match my old machines. I will try to post some better pictures later today.

Speaking of auctions, here is a delayed shipment of auction wins from a UK based FB group. Grabbed some nice vintage planes, hammers, and other fun stuff. Their shipping to the US can be fun, if you opt in. They wait til they get about 30kg of stuff, then ship it to a US guy, who redistributes it. Great for saving money, but takes time and patience. And you have to keep track of what you bought. Part of my box's contents got switched with someone about 75 miles away, so a bit of extra delay (she bought some nice looking stuff that I would't have, so I knew something was wrong. But it's all here now, and like Christmas, cuz I had forgotten what I won.

Left to Right, a 13-1/2" infill panel plane with a Ward iron, pair of MT2 drill bits for the wood lathe (21/32" & ??), 3 Warrington and 1 Ball Pein hammers, quite rusty, a Record 311 rebate / bullnose plane, missing the blade, a Ray Iles replacement (bought retail, but thrown in the same box), a Record 778 dual arm Rebate, and a Skinner ratcheting joist brace. The planes will show up in the Handplanes thread over the next weeks.

Nice catch on those lamps. I don't know how valuable those are, or if someone spied something else in the pile to drive that price so high?

The one that has what looks to be a double wall reflector head. the tell tale for me are the ventilation holes. IIR there is a Dazor thread here.

all here now, and like Christmas, cuz I had forgotten what I won.
Nice finds!

Some delayed shipments leave me wondering "What did I order, from where? :withstupi

I was thinking the hinges were the give-away.

Sometimes it pays to go picking in your own house... I saw this video on YouTube and decided I wanted to try that approach as a substitute for Evaporust. I went picking for some slightly rusty subjects in my own basement and found these items (I didn’t clean the pliers, they were my dads). Everything (but the pliers) went into the soak for 4-5 hours and I was very pleased with the results. Two of the "S" wrenches are Controlled Steel (not sure of the maker on the third), the offset screwdriver is a "Pop" Walker, a bog standard Lectrolite DBE, and the pliers are Smith & Hemenway (but not Red Devil).

Picked up the lights from the auction, here are some better pics of the lot. The 3 lights at the bottom of the pic have tags Mfg. by Dayton and they are my favorites. The 2 matching Dayton lights I plan on putting on my Bridgeport. Other pic is most of what came with the lot.
crank handles are manual feed wheels that actually fit my Bridgeport. 2 belts for larger Bridgeport, old DRO, 2 air over hydraulic cylinders etc.

Awesome haul!

The metal LB electrical conduit angle boxes are what I use for terminating Asco Red Hat solenoid valves.

The conduit angle boxes I will likely toss. Lot also came with these Heavy duty 15 amp single outlets , useless for me will toss those also.

Billiam, if these aren't keepers, I need the 7/16" x 3/8" for my collection. It's the wrong font (later production), but I'll squint and ignore it! :) Through our conversation about the S&H pliers on the S&H thread, I gathered these all might have some sentimental value, but if not, please put that one in a 'Future Trade' pile.

Nice looking Sax.
Despite the fact that no one in my family plays any kind of instrument, I am still tempted to buy them at garage sales and auctions when they are going for very little. I just like the good ones look, quality and the way they are made.
I know it's crazy to buy something that I cannot play or give to someone who does play.

And even if you don't play there are some uses for them. I was told if you want a camping spot with no one moving in next to you, if you put a Tuba out on the table it solves that problem. :)

Mostly Cornwell. Also, some SK, Wright, APEX, Lisle, Williams and a made in Germany hand vise. $5 for everything.
Suckage!

Yep!

And I have many instruments no one in the family really knows how to play, the girls plate the flute and has played Piccolo, and the youngest also learned French Horn. I'm a hack at guitar, mandolin, and harmonica, but that doesn't explain the clarinet, trumpet, several Violins, accordion and many, many, others...

Drove to a "professional run" estate sale this morning.
Almost didn't even go in when I saw the crowd lined up outside.
But after stopping at the gas station to fill up, I relented.
Items in the garage were mostly un priced, but the hundreds of coffee cans of hardware were not for me.
I dug through several boxes on the floor & came up with a non epa gas can, 2 full cans of hornet spray, and
Williams adjustable spanner #472,
Snap-on pliers date code 1952 (just a little older than me ha!)
$5.00 for the lot.

Outlaw, it was an 8am sale. Those don’t really happen here. They usually start at 9 or 10. There was barely anyone there. I showed up at 8:03, and still got everything that I noticed in the pictures.

Half of the box of impact sockets were APEX and Metra. I picked out the Cornwell and left the Metra and APEX. I did grab two 10mm APEX.

Does anyone know anything about Metra? Supposedly they are made locally. Maybe I should go grab them.

First local bootsale of the year today in my little bit of England 🥳

The God’s of picking had other ideas and brought on the only rain this week, then as I went out the door my wife asks why I’m off to the Dentist so early… of course the early dentist I had forgotten about was running late (how when I’m patient no 2!) but I went straight to the sale… and sat in the roadworks on route!

Still 2 hours later than anticipated I arrive as everyone else was leaving 🤬 but hey even a small rummage through the last remaining sellers treasures is always a win 👍

IMG_5928.jpeg

Still one solitary Kings pound coin (£1 - $1.29) got me both a 4” German cast CK adjustable wrench and a Wickes (Big box home improvement store) pound thru screwdriver which looks unused and is particularly sweet because they have stopped selling this style now. The wrench is tight and grips perfectly. It even stopped raining!
