I had to take the cap off the riser for my septic tank and realized I didn't have a strap wrench, my largest pipe wrench wasn't quite big enough. The PVC was just spinning because it wasn't attached to anything at the bottom. I called a friend who is a plumber to borrow a strap wrench because I didn't feel like driving 20 miles to buy one. I get there and he hands me this monstrosity and said someone gave them to him and he hasn't used them in ten years. :) When I brought them back I asked to buy them because I would need them again at some point and he told me to keep them. I have no idea what you would even use them for other than holding a 4" piece of PVC. I was also shocked that Matco gets $250 for them, 22" of pure power. :p

Those are cool! Nice score.

Just FYI if you're ever in a pinch you can try using a standard ratcheting strap. I pulled a galvanized pipe off a friend's old oil tank with one a couple years ago when I didn't have any tools with me. We strapped the pipe and then I wrapped the excess around a large screwdriver placed over the ratcheting mechanism. Worked same as a strap wrench.

Thanks, I was racking my brain on how to use a ratchet strap because I have a bunch of them. I was in a hurry though so just said the hell with it and ran over to his house which is only four or five miles away. I'm glad I did because now I have a cool new tool that I will rarely ever use.

Speaking of ratchet straps the son and I got a new SXS for Christmas and I found these straps on Amazon. They are the best I've come across and made in the USA which is a good thing.

I bought the 16 inch Cobras last fall and I thought they were big- I didn't know they made 22's. I also bought the 5 inch and I really like them.

Those would be pretty rare use for me.

I've got a few sets of their straps and they're really nice. They have killer sales on their website from time to time.

The wrench might also get lifted to the location of the fastener using a portable crane or winch, which is one of the ways very large impact sockets and wrenches are used nowadays.

People seem to like those, I just don’t use pliers like those very often, so its Tekton for the win . . . (y)

I'm the same way, I installed two clothes washers a month ago and even though I have a 10" pair of Knipex Cobra pliers sitting in the same drawer I just instinctively grabbed my Craftsman water pump pliers I've had for 30 years. The Cobra pliers work well but they are not all that.

Big set of pliers like that...something you won't use often but when you need then, you'll be glad you have them.

You ****. 😁

isn’t that something they use to re-compress a caliper when you’re changing the brakes?
