On my quest to start an adjustable wrench collection, I was looking online for Stanley wrenches and found numerous samples for sale but none were made in the USA. They were from Taiwan, Japan and Spain.

Did they make Stanley adjustable wrenches in the USA?

Since you expressed an interest in J.P. Danielson in your Intro-like 'Collecting bug' thread, I will point out that the first crescent-type adjustable @BrandonV posted here...
Plenty of older Stanley were made in the USA.
...was made in the old J.P. Danielson factory with tell-tale J.P. Danielson dies, probably by Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. (better known by their Proto brand) or Ingersoll-Rand, who were supplying crescent-type adjustables to Stanley before Stanely acquired the Proto Division from Ingersol-Rand in 1984. The clues for J.P. Danielson dies are the square throat and the FORGED ALLOY STEEL at the end of the handle. The clue for later production is the reinforced hanging hole, which early Proto LA and Proto MFD wrenches didn’t have.

Subsequent to my self-avowed J.P.D. crush on your 'Collecting bug' thread, I discovered that you may have been talking about a pipe wrench when you later posted a J.P.D.-made pipe wrench in the 'Pipe Wrenches' thread, but if you didn't know it, my reference to BET'R GRIP was about their crescent=type adjustables.

I posted a No. 1536 Stanley HANDYMAN in the J.P.D. thread linked here.

Nope, my dad had the JPD adjustable also, so you were right. I guess I need to snap a pic of it, too.

You, my friend, are a wealth of information and I thank you very much.

Nice NOS 10" for sale.

Thanks again for this. I just ordered one after looking on Ebay yesterday and today and not finding anything else I wanted. I even found a Stanley made in Korea to go along with the other countries I listed in the initial post.

So, do we have any idea who was making Stanley USA adjustable wrenches and when Stanley started outsourcing overseas?

?? In what timeframe? I just identified Proto (Pendleton Tool Industries ownership era, and Ingersoll-Rand ownership era) for you in post #5, from 1960 to 1983. In 1984, Stanley bought Proto, so they were made "in-house", so to speak, after that. I don't think Stanley was offering a crescent-type adjustable prior to 1960. At least that's the earliest I could find when I was researching the Stanley HANDYMAN I posted about above, with a link to my original post in the J.P. Danielson thread.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in saying the one I just bought in the auction above. I'll wager a guess that it would be of the PROTO variety. Again, thanks for the information!

Yeah like 100 years ago.

No worries, @OmegaDPW, I should have seen that it was a continuation of the purchase and not a general question. I can't help you on that one. I don't know anything about modern tools.
Well, if they went in house after buying out Proto, I could assume that they were made there. That'll be my guess at least. Again, thanks!
