Yesterday contractor got the water supply line trench dug, going from the closest yard hydrant to the shop across the driveway.

Had them run a short trench over for another hydrant for a future RV hookup.

Today the plumbers tied into the water line and ran PEX over to the shop and the RV hookup hydrant.

After inspection I’ll run some conduit for power so my wife can have lights on the trees and for any future data cable I might want to run to the shop. It’s an open trench going under my driveway, so might as well do it now!

Got a small bit of progress done on the shop. Contractor had his crew come and tune up the pad and backfill the slab. 43F92869-730F-4D31-ADEE-CAA76023947A.jpeg4A610E76-B50F-4D32-B346-E60FA3A9D7B9.jpeg
He also had them level my outside storage area and spread all the extra A/B, then wheel pack it with the Bob Cat. I can now work on my 6’ screen/fence for this area.

Once the building is finished I’m planning on building a Versa-lock block retaining wall right at the 5’ envelope of the pad to gain another 4’-5’ of footprint in this area. The pile of fill is needed to build a ramp for the power utility to back their truck up to the building when they pull the cable for my power to the shop. Not a bunch done but still progress.

Had a great first today….
Pulled my F350 into my new shop and rotated the tires. So nice to have a place to do maintenance on my vehicles….

Yup, sent that to my contractor, and 10 minutes later he called me and assured me that the building sub-contractor will be finally showing up first of next week. 😂 Then that guy called and confirmed that he would be here Monday at the earliest, Tuesday by the latest, and that it’ll only take 8-10 days to get his part done!
We shall see, not getting excited until I see the whites of their eyes!

I have to laugh about this next picture! My father was a contractor in the California Bay Area for over 40 years. He put up metal buildings all over the Bay Area. When I got out of High School I came out to California to work for him. One of the buildings we put up was on the IBM Campus on Monterey Road in San Jose. To keep busy I started doing what this guy is doing here…

He’s putting nuts on bolts before loading the bolt bags to make it easier to hang the red iron. My dad yelled at me for doing that, told me to NOT do that, cuz the IronWorker Union would picket the jobsite if I got caught doing “IronWorker Work” cuz I wasn’t in their union! They actually did try to shut him down when they caught me sweeping all the metal chips off the roof. My dad politely explained to those two IronWorkers that I was his son and that I was allowed to be a laborer in his company and that if they didn’t get off “his” building he would gladly throw them off! Only saw my father truly angry a few times, glad they both went down the ladder and left!

After the building crew left for the day we washed all the red iron down with car wash soap and a pressure washer I picked up last week at a yard sale. Yup, another good deal I couldn’t pass up! It worked great and now all the dirt and grime from the red iron laying on the ground for almost a year is gone!

Nice and clean and shiny! Compare this picture from the one before and you can see all the grime and dirt that is now gone. One of my pet peeves with red iron buildings is the dirty iron, and once all the insulation and siding is up it’s almost impossible to clean it completely! I know, I’m being ****, but it’s something that I feel is critical to how the shop will feel going forward!

That really looks great!

Nothing wrong with being ****, this is your dream shop! Think about future "Jimmy" sitting in his new shop under roof looking up at a beam and seeing dirt, probably pissed b/c you have to figure out how to get up there to clean, now its a non-issue!

I think you're being too **** Sterling. I would just let that slide and not even give it a second thought. ;)

So Mike, would you use a Spectrum light paint analyzer to get a perfect match or do you think RustOleum Red Oxide Primer is a close enough match?! I did find a quart can of Red Iron red in one of the hardware boxes, but it definitely isn’t enough for a complete recoat!

Sterling, I think you'll be ok with the standard red oxide primer, no sense in getting carried away. :bounce:

So before you do a contact wash you are supposed to use iron remover. 🤔

That's looks great! Don't forget to spray all the framing for termites! 😉. Oh wait I forgot its probably already in the 100s and the rays of the afternoon sun have already fried them.

My wife was there over spring break and she came back and was like......damn it was hot haha.
