Hi All,
I figured this box deserved a thread outside of the amazing garage sale thread,
Yesterday's find was a 1914 Gerstner 41B . I did a quick clean, removed some paint splatter ,waxed the wood surfaces and polished the brass knobs. At some point I will likely make a front cover, which to be correct will need a leatherette wrap, which may push/leak over into a full recover job. I'm sourcing handle leather recovering to keep this one together. I've sourced a lock on Ebay I think might work.
This box had an unusual l repair, the lower right side had come unglued, likely part of losing the brass corner protector. This made the lower drawer slip off the drawer glides, not run smooth. The fix was they nailed a small piece of a boxwood ruler to the left drawer slide, pushing the drawer back onto the right drawer slide. I'm not sure why they didn't just glue and clamp the side and bottom of the case back together properly. I think it was much less work. Anyhow that is my pavaler moment for the day.

I ordered this lock via Ebay to see if I can incorporate it into a front panel. I will likely head to a local lumber store and peruse the 1/2" poplar stock. If I get too ambitious it will force me to clean off the table saw.

Check the parts section of the Gerstner web site. They have replacement leather handles. Pricy though. $60.00

It really is great that Gerstner & Sons is still in business and you can order replacement parts to this day.
