I disassembled, cleaned, inspected, honed, stoned gasket surfaces, etc.....this Rotax 951cc Direct Injected 2 stroke. This only had about 14 hours on a new top end and it puked an inner crank bearing. I scrapped out another one where the air compressor piston exited the side of the case......it had a nice crank that I saved. Just got all new gaskets and seals in so I can make it run again!

The ceiling work continues as I turned this mess in to a solid ceiling again. Lots of cutting, scraping, caulking, priming and painting to make this mess look right again. Stealing tiles from obscure corners of the building to make the large rooms complete again. 50 years of leaks took a toll.

Set up a metal cutting area in my Dad's shop to make the cuts and custom sizes needed to patch.

That's sad. What happened?
I was one of the exhibit designers on the expansion wing.

It isn't a thing anymore, well it hasn't been for awhile but MBA used to allow active military or veterans get in for free on specific days which was either Veteran's Day or something.

In 2015 I just happened to have been out on the wharf with my ex on a sort of date. I found out about the whole 'free admission for MIL' so we walked on over as it had been a great day so far.

Fuzzy on the details (I suffer from memory loss) but I recall not being allowed in because I didn't meet the criteria. Apparently you had to have either an Active Duty MIL ID (which I wasn't active, I was a disabled veteran) or your VA card.

Don't ask me why but I just so happen to have my old Active Duty MIL ID (expired of course) and not my VA card.

Thing is, the lady got real condescending with me and pushed it to the point where she was calling me a liar about my status. I was just telling her why would I have a CAC with a name that fully matches my DL? It escalated more to a "proving a point" vs just trying to get a free ticket, going to the aquarium was cheap but she was a real ******* ***** about how the whole thing was handled.

Well, things escalated when I shared my whole experience and let some higher up director know what I went through when I met him at my place of work some months later. They were at our dealership (I was finance director at the time) and they had purchased a Grand Caravan or two for the research institute.

Had to make a cart for an entertainment cabinet so it could be rolled out from in front of access hole for water shutoff at entry point to house. Needed a wooden molding to cap the face of the plywood base. To hide an aluminum angle on the top edge I had to cut away an area on the inside 90. Was going to set up a router but then it occurred to me I could do the same thing with an end mill locked to right height. My old dovetail mill was still set up, so just threw a 5/8 collet and end mill and set a stop to slide against.

That out of the way I got together a bunch of air hoses, checked the ends (I am in process of changing to high flow in both shops) and had enough complete ones to reach 250' from compressor in farm shop to my old Galion 125 crane. It had a tire go down over winter in it's normal parking spot (near power panel in yard). Need the crane mobile to use for testing leaf spring rates (ends anchored to Cat).

IMG_5633.jpegIMG_5642.jpegIMG_5636.jpegIMG_5647.jpegAnother beetle kill pine project.
I previously posted a pie safe & a linen closet made from this wood. Today’s piece is a rifle rack.
I continue to experiment enhancing the grey fungal stain by highlighting it with very dilute blue wash. This one really popped. The photos have a poor color rendition. To the eye the wood is blue black & chocolate. First pic is raw wood. End result sure doesn't look like pine.

Put in a new shifter handle and knob in my 85 mustang. Replaced the old KYB rear shocks. Then took it for a quick ride. The parking brake cable was stuck just enough to drag the shoes on the left side. Tried to free is up but couldn't. Also found a leaky rear wheel cylinder. So going to order two new wheel cylinders, new hardware kit, new shoes, and parking brake cables. The weather was great today. Was going to do yard work but took a pass.

Took out some yard tools. Put some yard tools away.

Sat for a bit in my sanded, washed, and ready to stain chairs, contemplating the spot where a squirrel put a new gouge in the top of the chair arm. Must have happened yesterday while I was washing them.

Didn't add what came of that.

Well I got a call along with a visit by said director with tickets to the aquarium. I declined and told him I won't go ever again even if it was free each and every time.

The fact that I was embarrassed publicly by their staff, and flat out told (as a disabled veteran) that I'm not what I state I am was such a big disrespect that I just wrote them off completely.

I don't ask for free ****, hell even my wife has to remind me to ask about MIL discount or whatnot but in public you wouldn't even be able to tell since I never bring it up to anyone.

Funny though how different people treat things way different. Here's me raising the Marine Corps flag for our city's Veteran's Memorial park in 2022 -

IMG_4223.jpg

And attending the ceremony a year later to bring the flag down to take home with me -

Sometimes it makes a guest appearance if I post a pic of doing work in my garage since I've got it hung up on one of my walls.

I get it and it's really unfortunate that it happened. There is no reason for anyone to be treated that way.

Thank you for your service.

Been working crazy busy at work which brought some damn decent paychecks that were not expected. Then Wednesday, Foreman told me no Millwright work expected this weekend so enjoy your 4 day weekend!

Told the wife, its time for a day trip to Havre MT to pick up my parts That I take advantage of stateside free shipping.

No more hood prop As of last night. Buddy sent me a pic to make the hood prop even more structurally sound for the already weak 50 year old steel hoods of our early broncos.

this morning is to put the dash chrome bezels and replace the gas pedal pad. When to do the rear quarters, dunno but I wasn’t gonna pass up 90$ a side and free shipping to have those on hand.

Swept the shop this morning and wondered how on earth I had literally 2 5gal pails of dirt on the floor. Then I looked things over before turning the lights off at the end of the day and shook my head. It’s mud season or better known as “dirt relocation season”. There will be a few scoops of dirt when these machines move again tomorrow. Good grief.

I need to purchase mining rights somewhere and start a gravel pit so I can afford to put gravel everywhere I need it. As it is I purchase roughly 30 12yd loads a year and that’s just to maintain existing driveways.

Have you tried heavy duty driveway fabric first?

  • Did the 100hr maintenance on the Quincy compressor, adding a ball valve for the oil drain.
  • Lubricated the belly mower deck on the tractor
  • Installed the new, updated harness mounts on the Civic
  • Changed transmission oil on Civic
  • Bled brakes on Civic
  • Change oil and filter on Civic
  • Test fit the Covercraft car cover (again)
  • I will remove the iron bits from the Civic wheels using Griot's Iron Remover
  • Started the tool and spares checklist for next week's race
Slow down a bit, if my wife sees this, I am screwed.

Not in my garage, this is in my storage unit.
I think I’ve finally figured out how the mice are getting in. There’s just enough space to squeeze through at the corner of the unit near the door. I packed that area with steel wool last fall and ended up catching a bunch of mice with traps I placed there.

More recently, I noticed small holes in the garage door tracks that you can see from the outside. I sealed those up with tape and added a few more glue traps. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if they’re truly sealed out.

Loaded up my Polaris, went off into the woods and planted, caged, mulched and staked 8 bareroot sugar maples. I made the deer and rabbit cages out of black coated steel. When you use black and you look into the forest the cages disappear. Aesthetics matter to me!

It was oil change day for the F150, so I put it up on my wooden ramps and did that. Brake fluid needed flushing, so I got to use my Motive Power Bleeder. Someone posted a link about that a while back, and I finally got to use it. Worked a treat. While in there, I noticed that the radiator cap was leaking, so picked up a replacement at the dealership, and put it in. Pretty easy day all told.

In front of the garage...
Today my MINI got it's first wash of the year... My wife asked if we could take it and do a mini run to the local ice cream shop for a chocolate milkshake... Why sure we can...

IMG_4766 2.jpg

While I had the pressure washer going, I washed the neighbor's white plastic fence that had mold growing on it... Looks nice now...

Today was much more successful in the world of auto maintenance! I stuck the Outback up on the QuickJacks and tackled changing the CVT fluid. After a brief problem connecting to the OBD reader to watch the CVT temp (fluid is added while the engine's running, while the temp's within a certain range), the drain & fill was completed with not too much of a mess. The new Mityvac fluid dispenser worked very well.

I piggybacked onto the normal maintenance schedule, so I also changed the oil and air filters, rotated the tires, and did some spring cleaning on the undercarriage with the hose. No cursing today!

Did a quick sharpen on the two saws i used the other day. I know they both touched dirt. Got the RC batteries and charger all put away. Cut down a piece of copper pipe to put onto the Miata negative battery terminal. The band clamp bottoms out before it's tight enough for me. Off to in-laws for dinner.

Rainy day project that’s been on the back burner for a while.

We live across from a school, with enough outdoor lighting to be seen from space. I don’t know why they need the place lit up like that, but whatever. Makes it “too bright” in the bedroom for sleeping. Windows have cellular shades, but there’s enough light leakage around the edges that it’s still a problem.

A while back, walking through Menards, I found an end cap with “blackout curtains”, cheap, so I bought a couple. They’re way too big for the windows, and meant to hang from a rod, so completely wrong for these. But they make good cheap raw material.

Today, I cut one up and made a fitted blackout curtain to go behind the cellular shade.

IMG_6800.jpeg

Theres still a little light leakage at the seams.

Because I want them to be removable, I mounted them to the window frame with strip magnet.

IMG_6801.jpeg

One side stuck with the included adhesive, the other side sewn in to the seam.

With the shade down, the side seams are hidden.
