My accidental haul of the day. I found this Simpson 260 8xi analog multimeter on Marketplace several months back. I saved it and fast forward to this week it pops back into my search results. I've wanted one of these for a while. I kind of wanted one with the traditional black case but the yellow has grown on me and matches the Fluke meter. I paid $120 for the meter which I feel is not a bad buy at all but I did have to drive quite far. The seller put some fresh batteries in it and it worked just fine. He was pretty geeked out about this meter. I'm almost surprised he decided to sell it. We got to talking and he starts showing me some other tools from a sack. He ends up giving me a bunch of bonus tools for free! This stuff definitely brings me back to a time when I was into this sort of trade. Now I can't tell you the last time I made an ethernet cable but I still have all of my tools. The seller had been tasked with clearing a storage unit full of old electronics and telecomm stuff that had been sitting a good 15 years and I guess these were some of the leftovers that weren't sold on eBay. Some high quality tools that are quite expensive to buy new. Of course these kind of things aren't as relevant these days and likely can be found cheaply on eBay.

Bunch of random data/telecom bits. Tone generators, probes, AMP CAT5 and Coax crimpers, data and coax wire strippers, coax connectors, patch cables, wire label stuff, etc...

I love these Harris/Fluke strippers. I have a few now. Also an Xcelite coax cable stripper and an unbranded stripper that uses standard razer blades which you can adjust the height and position of to get multiple cut depths in a single operation. Pretty slick I'd say.

Pricey!

5.jpeg

Those dies are $$-$$$

6.jpeg

AMP crimper with die for CAT5 crimping. I'll have to ttry it out

7.jpeg

Crazy price with lots of less expensive options these days. It's cool you can replace the die to crimp other things or to service the tool.

I played around with the meter for a bit. I'm still learning it and getting used to how the scales work. It is definitely off a bit and will need to be calibrated. I guess that is to be expected for being a 25 year old meter.

Edit: Looks like the scale was set fully set to zero which was why AC and DC were both reading high. I'm lucky it doesn't look like it needs calibration since that is not a cheap service. Dial is also silky smooth which is great since dust can cause issues. Won't beat out my Fluke in accuracy but will work nicely as a basic utility meter and as a bonus it doesn't require batteries for basic voltage checks. I just need to come up with some sort of case for it.

MrsLS&I were at work yesterday, the first of a two-day Cetronia community garage sale, with predicted overnight rain through today. When I got up this morning, though, it seemed the rain might hold off, so we took a drive over there. MrsLS picked up two low & long Longaberger baskets and insert trays for $5 total, and I picked up a Winchester framing square (seller told me it had been her grandfather’s) for $5, a set of six curtain rod holders for $1, and a Newwark NJ Forged Steel Products VacuumGrip slipjoints (with home-replaced pivot) for…free! Then it started raining, so home again.

These were in the "welp, I guess we'll send them to the metal recycler's" pile at the tool library, so total cost $0.

1000001619.jpg

(I am genuinely surprised that the pliers and wrenches and weird triangular vise clamp did not make it into the "we should refurbish this" pile, but everyone is dealing with a lot. I'm just lucky that my way of dealing is "that looks interesting under the gunk, gimme.")

I don't know why you call those tools "obsolete"--I use the cheaper versions on a regular basis. Our POS system is entirely hard-wired with CAT 6.

The weird triangular "vise" is a Can't Twist welding clamp--and highly desirable.

The both of you ****.

Definitely didn't quite say 'obsolete' but certainly not as relevant these days. A good punchdown tool and crimper certainly come in handy at times.

That vise/clamp is a good save for sure.

Slow day, it being spring break for the local schools last week. one TOO, one planned (It was supposed to be a block sale - Nope...) and one was posted late I went back out for.

TOO had the Giants hat marked for Spring training in FL - Maybe a demo game, or maybe during covid?

"Block sale - the US Army pocket knife for $2 and the small abalone shall/stand for $2

The Latr one was high prices generally, but I manged to get a 3" SO knurled extension for a buck.

Both the extension and knife need a de-rusting bath:

A friend emailed me yesterday that he was looking for a couple of bench grinders, one to set up as a buffer and one with a stone and wire wheel. I told him I'd keep an eye out. He's also been looking for a mechanic's chest for a while.

I needed to get away from the shop and responsibilities for a while, so I took off down-valley to hit the honey holes--not expecting to fins anything in particular, just a little junk shopping therapy.

Lo and behold:

54478074736_eb37da231b_o.jpg

The box needs some work, but it was five bucks. This sort of thing doesn't happen when I go looking for something particular for myself!

For me:

Two like-new triangular files. The one with the handle is a Disston USA, the other an R. Hoe & Co, no COO. The Vaco K46 is a split-blade screw starter. $2 for those.

Hit the sales this AM without too much luck. Mostly junk today, and not much of that even, but I managed.

The Xcelite bit set was the only garage sale find, while the powder scale and Snap-on distro set were from a used tool store I frequent, and the Huskey long hex bits were from the Restore.

As I was in the area, I swung by my favorite thrift store, were I found the following books: reprint of The Oxbow Incident, Maugham's auto biography, a George Higgins crime novel, Dostoyevsky's writings, and my favorite, and hunting adventure book from 1899.

Here is my minor score from a day of frustration. Several planned stops, one kept changing its addresss (WTF?), one turned out to be a decent distance away from where the CL map showed them, so I skipped it. Then again, another said their tools were sold out at 730, when the posted opening time was 900. Another had an item MLW liked, but it had sold out early. And my planned breakfast stop had a huge line and no parking spaces. Since I’d been out running the dogs, that was a skip today.

I did manage to score one item, tool adjacent at least. It was a Filson Belt Pouch, for about 1/10 of what they are selling for on eBay. New enough that the pocket with the retainer loop actually fits my current cell phone.

Also got some plants for MLW.

***** to @neharr41 and @Squez for the snap on hauls! Also to @bmwrd0 for that little klein 1/4 box, I never find Wright stuff up here...

Been running around a bit the last few days with little to show for it. Can't complain though, the weather's been beautiful after what seemed like an interminable winter, and the sales are starting to kick up again!

Took the day off yesterday and spent part of it hitting a few first day pro sales and paying out the nose. This stuff was $2 per item except the Starrett punch which was $4. Sadly the Proto box was empty.

IMG_7622.jpg

Different sale, same day and ES company. $2 per item again. Looked forever for the Proto LA pebble 7/16 and couldn't find it.
IMG_7623.jpg

This is the stuff from today, went up to the flea and hit a few sales. $5 on the Craftsman ratcheting wrenches, set is complete. This is the first Craftsman 1/2 drive set I've found in one of the little trays so I paid up for it. $10, it's metric -vv-. Another $10 for the Plomb swivel sockets from my usual flea guy, and $2 worth of wrenches from random flea vendors.

Today’s sales were all down towards Outlaws neck of the woods. Two sales were in San Lorenzo and another just over the line into Castro Valley. We tried to start with one of our preferred sales companies, the tie dye people. We arrived a while after opening and were number 33 on the second sign up list so we bailed and went on to the Castro Valley sale. The toolboxes had been sold before we arrived but there was some worthwhile tools left. IMG_2136.jpeg
All of the Craftsman tools were the best of the Moore Drop Forge made sockets (=v= with pointed As). These will upgrade sets rather than being flipped.IMG_2165.jpeg
The Indestro wrench set even had the original bolt. IMG_2169.jpeg
Toyota screwdriver.IMG_2141.jpeg
We headed to the next sale with a seller who just specializes in tools. We have been to many of his sales and never been disappointed. IMG_2143.jpeg
Plomb wrenches.IMG_2149.jpeg
Thorsen wrenches.IMG_2150.jpeg
Snap-on and Vacuum Grip.IMG_2148.jpegIMG_2146.jpegIMG_2144.jpeg
From there we headed back to the first sale.

They were still using a sign up list when we returned but we were second on that one. We only waited a few minutes before we were let it. I fully expected that everything I wanted would be gone but I was pleasantly surprised. IMG_2151.jpeg
Lots of Barcalo.👍IMG_2152.jpeg
Took the size labels off of the Thorsen sockets and cleaned them up.IMG_2170.jpegIMG_2173.jpeg
Thick 15” carbon steel Crescent wrench. IMG_2153.jpeg
Finally some non-rusty Peterson Vise Grips.IMG_2158.jpegIMG_2159.jpeg
4” Craftsman adjustable marked WF.IMG_2162.jpeg
Allen wrench set.IMG_2163.jpeg

All in all, a pretty good day.

Quite month again from me. didn't post last month at all, as no tools, but did find a poster advertising a train outing from my village to another that I had never heard off, Kilraven and a year 1936. To add to the confusion of not having heard of the destination, the fact my village doesn't actually have a train station, it interested me. So enquired on the price and bought it.
"Kilraven is a fictional town in County Mayo, Ireland, that serves as the setting for the RTÉ drama series "Obituary". The town and its characters were inspired by the writer Ray Lawlor's real-life experiences and observations in his hometown. "Obituary" is a dark comedy crime drama that follows the life of a young woman working for a newspaper in Kilraven."
Not actually heard of the show either tbh. But it's quite cool, nicely framed, so will be going up on the wall after we renovate the house.
Anyway, back to today and well, not much again.
Sheffield made square in nice condition apart from a little rust on the blade, a england made Stanley 99E and a mini pick head. Used a welding hammer as I mini pick when I was rebuilding some walls around the land and found it very useful to dig out stones without the weight of bringing a full sized pick with me. After cleaning it, realized putting a handle on it won't be straight forward, it's a little odd size, any of the spare handles I have won't work. And it's eye is tapered in the 'wrong' direction, wider at the bottom. Still I'll get one to fit at some stage.

Makers Mark on the pick, I'll be a while figuring this out, but the manufacturer had sons!
Will try a few filters later to see if it helps any, but I doubt it.

Went to an advertised tool yard sale. Mostly electrical/plumbing/construction stuff which isn't my lane but managed to grab a few items for $25 total. The mini vise is a cool item I need to do some research on it. It has

Cool that is has markings at all! most of those are unmarked.

Do you have a small replica fishing knife....
done to scale?

:)
I have 2 "mini Bowie" knives with 2" blades. The 2 finger handles make those a bit impractical for use however...

Some snapon,Mac, and sk.The smallest kabar I have ever seen for my boy. $15 all in at local flea market.
That kabar is interesting, below is my late fathers fishing knife. no name on it, but I would be fairly sure it's Sheffield made, and is very similar to my own bone handle William Rogers below it.
Interesting to see the similarities across different manufacturers and different Continent's. Different style pommels is the main easy see differences.
