I really have to stop trolling FBM


A vintage Snap-on K-22, full of vintage woodworking and machinist tools. I messaged the seller this morning, and as soon as he got back to me I ran off and bought it. It is still in the back of my truck! I was only able to get a couple pics, and now I need to unload this, and hope I have enough room for it.

Snap On: - The find of the day for me is the 1/4 TM711 ratchet. Besides the rust on the mechanism the chrome looks mint like it was almost never used. Also a couple 9/32 drive tools from the 30's which are now my oldest Snap On tools. The T handle on top dates to 1933.





Neat tack hammer. "GW Mount" brass with steel tips.

Whoa - Maybe I’m not seeing that logo right - is that 1920-1944 original gray paint on a 1953-1981 logo?
EDIT - I forgot that gray paint persisted on the smaller chests a few years after red replaced it on larger chests. 1945-1952 logos don’t seem very different from 1953-1981. That logo seems to be among several variations printed in the 1946 catalog, but not visible on chests. 1948 doesn’t seem to offer a K-22.

Yeah, that is what has me wondering about this box. It is definitely original paint, and the external clasp is original too. But the logo is much later. I guess is it is from right at the transition point? I will post it in the Snap-on thread, see what the experts over there think.

Had to catch up on about a weeks worth of posts (Don't ask) Lots of great finds!

My minimal finds from last Saturday's beautiful weather, lots of TOO's besides the College Flea, Sort of slow pickings pre mother's day; one left behind as the guy was too much $$:

College Flea:- $2 Five ignition one Presto-lite wrenches; $6 PEXTO wood handled driver; $5 Stanley insulating Co. alum flat canteen - 1923 pat. Date - Has the 1918 army type cap ; TOO $3 5mm hex socket, lug lock key that fits my T-van, Blue Point 5" pliers









TOO $2 3 woodwick candles + 1 free;

And a milk crate I filled getting stuff out of the top compartment, to make it easier to get downstairs

It was advertised as grandfathers woodworking tools, but it seems to be more machining tools than that. There are Starrett combo squares and punches, Stanley brace and chisels, Lufkin and Tumico, Swiss files and normal, Proto keyring driver, Heller bearing scrapers, and on and on. Everything was in surprisingly good shape, the drawers are smooth, and there was not much junk. All in all a good pickup. Oh, it was $100, and I didn't even try and talk him down.

It's a time capsule treasure chest! Definitely more mechanical related than wood working other than the chisels.

What’s in the lid of the box? Is it a sign or something painted on the inside of the box?

It looks like a printed paper or cardboard “SALOON” sign. Hopefully just taped on.
@bmwrd0 Does it have drawer slides?
The logo is the only bit of it that looks post-war to me.

It was a cardboard Saloon sign, taped in. Now removed. Yes, it has drawer slides.

A second-generation canteen version of the famous insulated thermoses that are still extremely popular today, famous for the US Army's testing of them during WWI, still being used in pocket flask form by pilots in WWII, and, very recently, the subject of an unusual 'Stanley vs. Stanley' (reminiscent of Plumb vs. Plomb!) trademark lawsuit.

That's a really cool find, Outlaw! I know Stanley/Aladdin had a great vacuum insulated thermos early on, but this one is essentially a flattened version of the WWl/WWii aluminum canteen. its not a "thermos", just a canteen. Apparently the Co. name included "Stanley insulating Co." But I suspect the canteen cover was the insulation in this case. wet the padding and let it evaporate to help keep the water cool in hot weather, and padded so it's slower to freeze in cold weather.

The tiny precision screwdriver set ended up being a disappointment but I'm quite pleased with the rest. It's a China set and the blades tend to pull out easily but maybe I can crimp them in a vise/JB Weld then I'll have something useable. The listing for the screwdrivers was what brought me to the sale in the first place. I'm glad to now have the long shank and the large stubby screwdrivers. Most of these tools ended up being in excellent condition and some just needed a little bit of TLC. I just finished cleaning some of these tools.

Back in Western NY, where good tool sales abound! A professionally run sale at the home of an ex-Marlin Rockwell (MRC-TRW) bearings plant employee. The entire basement was full of tools organized in a manner that would satisfy the most OCD among us!! Everything was in hundreds of Rubbermaid containers, each of which was cataloged and cross-referenced. Here’s a picture:


I haven’t gone through everything, but here’s a sampling:

S-K 1/2” sockets and ratchet, S-K breaker bar, 8” adjustables - Crescent and Craftsman, Proto 10” Pipe Wrench, Ideal 420 lineman pliers, Crescent/Klein/S-K screwdrivers, and an unknown driver.

I also picked up a few of the Rubbermaid containers with smaller sockets (Penncraft, Companion, and Craftsman), measuring tapes, and chisels. I still need to go through them.


Unfortunately, I’m out of town and will miss 30% and 50% off days. They’ll be plenty of good picking!!

@ctuai I was intrigued by the musket. I don’t see any text (like “US” on a belt buckle or buttons) in the image to be sure, but the baldric across the left shoulder to the right hip makes me think this is not a reverse (mirror) image. Yet the wear plate on the musket is facing us, not the **** (despite Lugz’s protest). So a right-handed soldier is holding a left-handed musket. That seems far less likely than a left-handed soldier holding a right-handed musket. So…Why?
EDIT - ah, but wait - I do see the button placket of his tunic is reversed, so maybe he just has his baldric over his right shoulder, and he is a left-handed soldier after all. I don’t know enough about dress regs to know if the shoulder is important - modern re-enactors and museum manikins seem to have it placed both ways.
