I will try to keep this to a minimum but I’m so excited about what I’ve been able to do so far just by watching “Jeff’s Shop”.

I believe I have a 13.5 inch late model 100 Craftsman bench top drill press 103.21761. The motor has a 1957 date and still works but has a slightly bent pulley (outside edge). The Chuck is a 633C.

I’ve preserved the old paint instead of stripping it off and repainting. I just removed as much of the surface rust as I could and dried it and put paste wax all over it.

I’m ready to put everything back together but the motor. I haven’t started with the motor because I just wanted to treat this as two projects. I’ve never done anything like this before.

1. I need spindle bearings and pulley bearings and wanted to get some advice on where to source those?

2. My Pinion spring and handle assembly looks like one from a 103.23620 (single handle). I dismantled it to clean it and somehow got mixed up and put my “leather Disk 26718) in the degreaser and it all but disintegrated so I will need to fabricate another one somehow? I’m also a little puzzled as to put it back together because when it came apart so easily everything just fell out and bounced around on the table. I see the exploded view but wondered if someone knew a simple method of assembly?

Thanks in advance for any help I can get here. I’m having loads of fun learning. I will attach some pictures of my project.484BEDE6-3679-4C6F-842F-A76DE72DCFCE_1_201_a.jpeg

A lot going on here...

I don't believe Jeff ever had a 13-1/2" model, but, except for the size of components, the only real difference between a 13-1/2" dp and a 15-1/2" dp is the feed handle assembly .

I've had very good success unbending those pulley dents with a home-made tool.

This was a fubar pulley and I intentionally inflicted this dent.

First, flatten the dent as much as possible with a flat punch.

Use the tool to finish.

Kudos on not repainting! Original paint is never perfect, but it's only original once.

I get bearings from www.JSBGreatBearings.com . If you are concerned about bearings from PRC, there are other options. I've never had a problem with JSB bearings.

I use 6205 shielded bearings for the pulley and 6202-5/8 sealed bearings for the quill/spindle.

2. My Pinion spring and handle assembly looks like one from a 103.23620 (single handle).
Your feed handle assembly is oe correct for the 13-1/2" drill press.

The 12-1/4" drill press has a feed handle rod without knobs.
The 13-1/2" drill press has a feed handle rod with knobs.
The 15-1/2" drill press has a three-handle hub.

I dismantled it to clean it and somehow got mixed up and put my “leather Disk 26718) in the degreaser and it all but disintegrated so I will need to fabricate another one somehow?
I punch new leather disks and have some extras.

This assembly had two steel disks for some reason. I normally add a 1/4" split lock washer to stiffen the spring against the rod.

The barrel of an old Sharpie makes rod installation much easier.

Thanks so much for the great information. How could I get hold of some of the leather disks? Gonna get online and get some bearings today. I think I see how to get the pinion and feed mechanism back together too, great pictures.

Hi,
I bought one of those Drill Presses back in the 90's for $75 put in new bearings, and used it as my main DP for 25 years.

Came upon a 15" Delta DP-220 rebuilt it and sold the Craftsman for $100to a friends brother...

I guess I got my money's worth!

They are great drill presses!

I'm planning on this rebuild being my main DP, but I'm enjoying this work so much I'm considering buying another one for more fun and practice. I'm hoping to find a floor standing model at some point.

Hi,
Those older Delta Wood Lathes are nice...

I never could find one at a decent price so bought a Delta MIDI back when they were around $500...

They are almost double that now.

Admittedly do not turn a lot but enjoy it when I do and the little lathe is really all I need!

I get bearings through Motion and get SKF or NSK bearings. I get C-0 bearings but will put C-3 bearings in the pulley if they are less expensive next time. I also put sealed bearings throughout. Not sure about the leather part, but cam lock cap gaskets are a good option for the spindle bumper gasket. Ace hardware should have those.IMG_0129.png

I want to thank everyone who pitched in to help me out on this with your ideas and direction. "FrankLee", I couldn't have done it without you :) . I've had a great time seeing this thing transform from a rusty hulk to a working piece of history. Jeff's shop was a wealth of information and good instruction. Those videos gave me the confidence I needed to start and not look back.

I saved as much of the original paint as I could. I only painted the stator band and the terminal cover on the motor, "the paint is only original once". This first link shows a duplicated test I did on the motor when it was attached to the press with no belt on day 1 of this little adventure, and another test just like it after I attached it after the rebuild. It's really something to hear, I was just blown away at the change. I think I have another link of the motor running on it's own and a third link that just shows the drill press as it sits today running with the belt attached at slow speed.

"FrankLee" shared a very simple and inexpensive light fixture design with me. In fact so simple I could do it. Also, a close friend, "Norman" gave me a drawing for adding a new toggle switch to the old press. Since the new switch is a toggle and doesn't detract from the look of the original press I was good with the change. I replaced the old single pole, single throw (SPST) toggle with a double pole, double throw (DPDT). The "On" position represented on the original on / off label still works for me in that "on" runs the drill press and the light. The down position runs only the light. I really like this power arrangement, keeping one power source, and from my perspective it looks like it was part of an original design.

I wired in the light to the switch through the terminal plate access, and installed a two wire plug on the end. The light fixture is all in one piece with a short wire and plug. The fixture design is hardly noticeable with the exception of light on the table.

I'm glad I remembered seeing this because it sure came in handy yesterday. Maybe others have a different technique for doing this, but even if you do, try this, it couldn't be any easier.

Once again, Thanks FrankLee for another great suggestion.
