Hello GJers,

I've always wanted a vise and decided to take a plunge on a Capri 7-incher. I spent a lot of time drooling over gorgeously restored vintage Parkers, Reeds, Wiltons, etc. but did not go down that road due to a few reasons. Ultimately I went with the Taiwan/PROC made Capri you see here. I'd love to have something new/nos and fully USA or Western Europe manufactured but I don't do enough work in the garage to justify paying 3-5x for a vise. I actually ordered the Yost ADI-6 first but it was horribly packaged from the factory and came damaged.

I wanted new and for $400 bucks it should do well enough for basic home use. I will soon be rebuilding a PS pump on a Gen2 CRV so I needed something to hold the housing in place. Great excuse to spend some more money! Initial impressions is that is good overall quality but then again I don't have anything else to compare it against. I definitely won't be pounding on this thing as my car is nearby and my workbench is fairly light duty.

Installation:
It is mounted on a piece of precut 1/4" steel (found at the shop) which I painted Rustoleum hammered black. I made sure to sit the fixed jaw a bit proud of the table edge as well. When not in use the vise swivels away nicely as my vehicle is parked close to the workbench.
For hardware I used 8.8 M10 partially threaded bolts I had laying around from a BMW differential. It had wave washers on it so those were used on the bottom. 6" and 5.5" Workpro magnetic jaw covers were also purchased on Amazon.

Great choice.

I have the 6” Capri and believe it holds its own against classic, big iron vises from USA makers. I have to admit.. I don’t exactly put my vises through a lot of heavy stress.

Here is mine amongst a few other classic vises: Craftsman 51840 4.5”, Craftsman 506-51801 3.5”, Wilton Cadet 4.5”. IMG_3039.jpeg

Looks great and I doubt you're missing anything by going with the Capri.

I have a Yost ADI one one end of my workbench and the sort of Made In USA old-school heavy-duty Reed that people gush about on the other.

I use the Yost more, because it works better as a vise.

That looks like a pretty good vise. Just avoid using a "classic" and you'll never know the difference.

Interesting mix of cast and rolled parts. Looks economical, as it eliminates a lot of difficult machining.

So, the car is for pounding on? Convenient!

Jeez @fishwatcher - that's cleaner than my kitchen; get in that shop and make a mess already!

Nice vise. Crazy wide jaws.

Also, Taiwan is the Republic of China (ROC). The People's Republic of China (PRC) is what we think of as China, or the Chinese mainland.
