SK 1/2" Torque Wrench failed - recommend a replacement???

It was one of those weekends where everything decided to break all at once.

My SK 1/2" clicker torque wrench went into free wheel mode. When I took the head apart all the teeth around the inner perimeter of the head looked nearly worn down. I'm surprised because this wrench hasn't even seen much use!!

Anyone know of a source of replacement heads for this? (but I assume swapping heads would require re-calibration??)

I'll probably toss it and get a new one. Any recommendations:

- Budget is $100 + or - a little.
- Need to start at 20 ft lbs but don't need to go past 150 ft lbs
- I don't need ultra precision and don't plan to send out my torque wrench for annual calibration. (ie I want reasonable accuracy and want it to stay that way)
- No electronics!!

Past threads seem to like Husky, Precision Instruments and Gearwrench as good quality and value. (but the PI split beam doen't start until 40).

Are Duralast worth considering?

Other suggestions?

For the $100 youre going to try and spend on a torque wrench i would just try to get another head or rebuild kit for your s-k(even though they are not really a functioning tool company at the moment) $100 and torque wrench that will be reliable arent really synonymous but i guess a decent cheaper one would be probably a k-d or a gear wrench one (same company different ratchet head)

My backup is an SK 1/2" open beam. I'm glad I have it but it's often difficult to view in certain situations.

The Sears Microtorques seem to have pretty poor reviews at Sears.com
(mostly broken lock ring issues)

Maybe it's a stupid question but how does the PI split beam style torque wrench tell you your desired torque has been reached. Does it click just like the other types?

I've gotten some good deals on NOS (S-K branded Danaher and CDI) and a used (but checked @ team torque) Precision Instruments torque wrenches.

All between 50-140ish dollars.

Yes it's a good torque wrench

I'm getting the PI 3/8" 20-100 ft # split beam for Xmas. Anything in the 100+ range I am going to use my el cheapo HF 1/2" clicker. I mean let's be honest, anything that is torqued to 100-150-200 ft lbs it doesn't matter if it's +-10 ft # off. Where accuracy matters is in the low numbers.

Did pdi make the snap on split beam style? They look identical to my snap on TQFR100 which I love. Problem is he'd need two wrenches to go as low as 20 and as high as 150.

Yep that's my plan. I'll order the PI 20-100. Anything less is covered by my SK 3/8" that's 0-250 in lb. For over 100 ft lbs I'll just pick up a 1/2" HF next time they have a sale.

20-100 is really the sweet spot for my needs.

I would also look up team torque's web site and they sell repaired wrenches ready to go on the web site plus will fix yours good as new if you want

The PI split beam style torque wrench; makes a sound that is similar to a "click" but has a different tone to it... probably because of the hollow handle. They have the benefit of not having to be turned to zero and from what I hear, are not as delicate as other designs. PI makes the Snap-On versions... I'm really impressed with them.
