2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Here are my finds from today, couple of local sales right next door to each other, then a village sale of about 25 site, then a pair a few miles north. First local Estate Sale was a bit of a bait and switch, showed a huge well equipped shop in the ads, but I tried to go in, was told next week. Dang. But turns out I know the seller through our dogs. His pup was outside when I tried to get into the shop, and looked familiar. Talked with him while waiting for MLW to finish, they’re moving across the bay to near OutlawMWS. The place has an on-site workshop outfitted by WoodCraft, and he used to work at the local one. He’s only taking some wood. The new place also has a hobby room, right near his apartment. Gonna be ok leaving his 30 year home. Made me feel better about shopping next week.

Anyway, at the first sale, only got some yard tools, MLW got a bunch of goodies not shown. At the next door sale, I got a blue toolbox (~17 x 4), a three sided Diamond sharpening system, some drip tubing, and a cigar box.

At the village sale, which only had locations, not lists of items, so we hit lots of baby and kid items first. Did get a long handled yard tool storage thing at the first stop. Finally found some tools sold by a women liquidating her husbands old tools. Got change from $20 for most of the ratchets (SK and old Husky by NB), wrenches, drill bits and some screwdrivers, including my second Two Fister. While there was a couple of Plomb, lots of the wrenches were bundled, with some decent Taiwan stuff being the bulk. Couple of sales later I found the saw with replaced nuts, and a bunch of smalls, including a cant file and sharpening slip for $5. The couple of big Craftsman screwdrivers and plastic organizer were $1 each.

The second to last stop was a “pseudo” estate sale, but I think it was actually a bunch of vendors brought in. MLW bought a plant.

The final ES was moved to the garage, shed, and backyard, so maybe the second or third weekend. Found an AEC power screwdriver, but didn’t feel like risking it having unobtainium batteries. Really felt like quality. Did get a vintage General contour gauge with brass ends. First one I’ve found in 30 years of looking with all the pins straight, and only one I’ve ever owned.

Most modern Americans would find this grip far too short. It's 3 1/2" from the base of the blade to the beginning of the pommel, with no guard or ricasso--very easy to have your finger slip onto the SHARP Skandi grind.

It fits me OK, but I'm no modern American.



I wear a size 8 1/2 glove--and my hand is disgustingly clean.

I think my two primary knives for camping and skinning are similar grips, if not even close to blade style:

It's a Marttiini Lynx 121 puukko, a tradition Finish do-all knife. It's the first model of knife Marttiini made back in '28, and they still make 'em today--but they're different from mine. I sent an e-mail to Marttiini to see if they can date it.

I've been wanting to give one of these pressure-sprayers a try. I need to look up the instruction--it has two tips. My guess is that one is spray and one stream?

Yes , one tip for fan spray and one for stream. If it is functioning properly, you will love it!

There didn’t seem to be much in the way of worthwhile sales in the Tahoe basin so we headed over to Nevada to some more likely listings. There was a wildfire burning in the high desert close to Gardnerville but it was a little ways away from the first sale we hit. We found some licence plates for basement decor and a little oiler.
The seller told us that a person who lost everything in the fire had been at her sale buying clothes earlier in the day. According to the news only two houses had burned. Very sad.
The second sale was a bust.
The third sale only had one item of interest to me.
The fourth sale was the one we should have gone to first. It was pretty picked over by the time we arrived but it was the estate sale of a mechanic who had a complete shop. Not much left but these came home with us.
My wife added to her local interest yardstick collection.
We checked out two TOOs on the way home. This one was in Minden. Heavy on the Wards tools
The final TOO was in Gardnerville. Got a DeWalt orbital sander set.

EDIT - Apparently, this is some variant on an Addressograph machine base. The heavy casting around the four holes is different from two repurposed versions I found online:

28-1/2” high, base 24” wide by 21” deep.
Top is 13-1/2x17-1/4” -ish (milled areas).
I think the “back” was bolted on backwards, which I will “correct” when it stops raining and I clean it up (probably tomorrow).

/ It must be X-Acto weekend. (Maybe I should go to the track today and bet nothing but Exactas.) This No. 86 set is way past my sweet spot, but it was peanuts, near-complete (loose pile o' blade and gouges etc), I like the little spoke shave, it included a 1971 booklet in great condition, and I don't think the seller (on the other end of the phone via his son-in-law minding the table) realized that the much older vintage leatherette pocket sheath with an L.S. Starrett 6" flexible rule No. 303R was not part of the kit.

Get a 25' 12/3 extension cord, cut the female end off and put an outlet in that junction box. You can never have enough handy outlets around the shop.

So a while back I sold a guy a set of Craftsman RHFT ratchets. We were talking for a bit and I mentioned I'm an SK guy. He said he just got a bunch of SK from someone and didn't have space for it. I expressed interest it in and he said he would sort through everything and let me know what all he had. That was back in February. Yesterday we met up and I had another set of the RHFT ratchets, plus some older RP stuff and a few other things I was looking to get rid of quickly and $80 cash for his SK stuff. I think I definitely got the better end of the deal. Two green metal box sets are complete, the metal rail metric set is missing a couple but I may have them and the one 1/4 set I have the ratchet and extensions to fill it out but I think I need a 3/8 socket. There's a lot of SAE, but a decent amount of metric as well. 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 drive stuff too. Massive SAE combo wrenches, just a huge amount of SK in general.

Estate sale ($10): Starrett no. 86 hand vise; Cox CCM 380 caulk gun; Kendrick & Davis no. 202 magnetizer/demagnetizer.

Des Moines been pretty slow in the old estate sale market or I've just been a bit more selective, either way it's a good way to catch up on getting things listed from my ever-full basement. Always nice to see a bit of Starrett gear show up. Magnetizer is fun though the coil gets pretty hot after extended use.​

Most were a bust.
At one stop for a buck each.

Then at another stop, I almost didn't walk up the driveway with 3 obese ladies staring at their cell phones surrounded by pink stuff.
But glad I did.
Inside their open garage on a table there was a coffee can with a Ridgid tubing cutter and another one I didn't recognize, had a price sticker of $2.00 for both.
When I looked closer at the other cutter it was Blue-point.
I asked if there were any other tools & she said. "look in those two boxes underneath that table, everything there is 50 cents or a dollar".
So for 25 bucks I came home with this:

Another Boy Scout Plumb head nice, handle split, another Estwing hatchet that has been ground down almost an inch. (and note how the missing leather rings were replaced with copper wire soldered in place).
A Channellocks 420, stamped Champion DeArment , and a Utica 21-4 Jewelers loop pliers.

Finally, A Proto 1430 brass hammer, A Brass plated Battery terminal tool, no name, made USA Patent link here:

Got a decent deal at a sale yesterday, $7 for the lot. Ignore the chain, it's just on the forklift for when it's needed.



Main draw is the Cornwell 1-5/8 wrench. Also an odd chisel appearing to be marked S&W Co. and a brass ball end for a walking stick(tip is broken off at screw hole but I think it can still be functional enough given weight is pushed against the remainder in use).


Also at auction a few weeks ago I ended up with a 2017 Wilton(no label) 1755 vise from the local mechanic shop that shut down. He did mainly engine and transmission work so I was hoping for the best. Listing was for a 12'x4'x4' table with vise but no clear pics or details so I got a hold of the mechanic and he said it was in good condition still, one jaw was off but he had it, so I bid and assumed I'd toss the table if it wouldn't fit in my shed.


Cleaned 3/16" of oil, grease, and metal particles off and it looks like above. Everything is great except for a few superficial dents on the arm, grind/cut marks on the jaw bodies(two deep ones but nothing necessarily structural), and the big issue the missing jaw plate was due to shearing both screws off and they proceeded to use it as is without the plate which mushroomed the screws near flush. I attempted to drill and extract but broke a few bits then chose the Dremel to grind into where the threads were supposed to be but they weren't visible. They had been under enough force to practically fuse them together with the body so I'll have to drill, plug, and tap new holes to restore the dynamic jaw to stock jaw pattern and probably just making a set of aluminum jaws.

Overall I'm not sure if it was a good deal or not. I paid $38 plus tax and the 30% auction fee and I pawned the table off on someone that was interested in it for free so I only had to remove the vise instead of taking the whole table to the shop. Next step is drilling, plugging, and tapping new holes though which is quite a bit of work. Then making jaws which should be a 5 minute job.

Oh and the missing jaw wasn't found so no option to just toss it back on if it wasn't messed up.

Great score … you ****! Funny how some of those that appear least likely to yield results provide treasures. The Stihl FSA57 Trimmer that I found was similarly under a table at a sale that was exclusively kids clothes and toys!

I hit an unusually early 7:00 AM YS today and did pretty well! Then after waiting til near nine at home, drove 14 miles one way to a dead end sale and decided on the way home to go back to stop #1 to get two items I'd left. I got more than that, but the two items were still there!


One of the first things I grabbed was one of these two forming rolls, good for up to 1/4" steel rod or 3/16 X 1" flat bar. missing the cranks, but that's an easy fix! The second I got on trip 2. That one needs new Zerk fittings, and both need greased.

This made me happy as I've been planing to make something like this for literally decades, - the original would have been for re-arching race car leaf springs. I just never got to it! Leaf spring re-arching is a thing of the past, even in racing, so these will do!

Amazon has these and they go for about $150 each.



Smalls: half size battery clamps. good ones!, Orange marking tape - I use this hunting fairly routinely. and the "head" for a rotating display hanger, I'll adapt make use of this.



More items on trip one; one was a really powerful green Laser, works even in bright sun! I may make it a laser sight for a bow or a pellet gun. I added the caps to it. it really is scary bright, I've shot it near 100 yards in noon sun! certain colors/reflective surface angles swallow it a bit, but far better rgan any alser Ive seen in bright light.

The SF mint commemorative coin was a mess when I got it. Unreadable black. Mothers helped. - yeah I know, never use polish compound on a coin; but it was already in worthless condition.






And a long MasterLock security cable. I'll add some cable clamps and hooks to this and make it a tow cable. I know from experience that you can't tow on the things Master used to close the loops. Should be about 20 - 25 ft.




And a Bi-pod; the seller said it was for a Pellet rifle. We will see what I can adapt it to. I like that the "lever" movement is not spring loaded, you pull a lock button and it tips.





The laser was an extra $2, and $15 for the rest. for trip one


On the second trip I, as mentioned, grabbed the second set of forming rolls. Then this carpet for camping - 5 X 7, not my favorite motif, but livable. I like old cheap "oriental carpets" for camp as it keeps dirt/dust/pine needles down, minimizes my impact to where I'm camping, and they are reasonably light, and easy to clean adequately. it shpould rol down to about 6" X 5 ft.




An 8 ft 13 Amp extension cord. How genius are the finger holes for pulling the plug? $15 for the above on trip two



and a very basic USB drill and a 60X loupe, with a side light for either white LED or blacklight LED. These were $7 more for trip two (two sellers)



So I added two more things to my "USB World" list - the USB powered drill and Green Laser "Sight"

Wow--be careful with that laser pointer! It sounds like it well exceeds the 5 mW legal limit for what can be sold as a "laser pointer".

While it isn't illegal to own, it is illegal to manufacture or sell a laser pointer that emits over 5 mW of laser light.

Using it for a gunsight seems like a great way to accidentally point it in an unsafe direction (yes, I know you're a responsible gun owner/user)--it will have a much longer range than a BB or air gun. That is illegal, and if you should point it towards an aircraft, it's now a federal felony!

The forming rolls and and bipod probably qualify as "YOU ****" items. That doesn't look like a toy bipod to me--it isn't a Harris, but I don't always like that style anyway. It appears to be set up for a Picatinny rail?

Definitely not a toy. very possibly for a Picatinny rail.

We had a very unusual Sunday for finding stuff, probably spent more today than in the last several months.

First off, saw some signs all week for a Gear Sale, just down the block from our favorite coffee place at the harbor. So after getting our morning coffee, we walked the three properties down to a commercial storage site that some of the fishermen use, and visited the sale. Three guys, sitting around BSing, with stuff spread around them. Lots of fishing and commercial boat stuff, but some other goodies, like an almost new Makita demo hammer, sump pump, and a few other goodies of interest. Nothing I needed, but as I was walking away, I saw a first aid kit I missed on the way in. Guy said it came out of a boat built in 1931, not sure if the kit, or contents, is quite that old, but may be.





The contents are mostly from the Seamless Rubber Company, New Haven 3, Connecticut. Some of the packages are bilingual, but have not checked them all. Trying to decipher where exactly New Haven 3 was does not line up with the two addresses reported for their sites. Will keep poking at it later, but it appears they also supplied military first aid kits, so that may help date things, knowing that those guys try to be very particular about dates.

Here are some shots of the contents. Several of the bottles still have liquid in them.




This label lists the seller, Golden State Supply Company in LA6, DU4-1257, another angle to check the age. The item above the label has a 2009 date, so it will be removed. The scissors say Korea, so they will also move out.



The other find was a restaurant close out, unfortunately someone we knew, and had eaten with a few times over his 7 years. He seemed much less stressed, as post Covid his business never recovered, but didn’t try to negotiate, except thru volume.

We were hoping to get a SS counter with drain to use as a potting area. Unfortunately that was gone, but we took a SS table, and three Metro type shelving units, and will go back for two more bigger shelving units once he empties them. These three are 18x36x4’ (in pieces), 24x24x3’, and 24x36x3’. Two of these were used outside, and being near a harbor, had environmental damage, so will be used outside for plant display. The third will go to indoor storage. The bigger two are 6’x6’, and again outdoor storage.

The table is ~5’ x2’, and will be used for an outdoor potting table. Also grabbed some dishwasher racks to help soak plants, and some pots n plants, not shown. The marble thing is just contact paper, so terrified of what might be under that.

Annual culling of the Revere Ware. Fortunately, not as much as last year. Been trying to avoid the 1qt saucepans. Highlights this year include the egg poacher (top-center) and the 7-1/4" combination pan (center-left), which was designed for frozen blocks of vegetables, and the novelty copper bottom 1 c measuring cup.




Note the straight sides of the 7-14" combination pan, which differentiates it from the 7" skillet/frypan.

Unfortunately, what's under the marble contact paper is galvy steel. It rusts rapidly in restaurant use. Why advertise it as stainless when only the top and legs are stainless? The "knuckles" that hold the legs to the shelves are aluminum alloy, but the set-screws are mild steel or just plain iron. The sockets for the tops of the legs are mildly spot-welded on--most of them in our kitchen now have screws to secure them. Like so much commercial kitchen ****, it's actually... ****. Sorry to rain on your parade--it'll likely do fine for your purposes--I just have to maintain this ****.

Euro shelving, OTOH, is great!

The thing is... I don't want to pop yer bubble... advertising is BS. Many of these "laser pointers" sold on Epay and the Jungle are way over-power in independent tests. If you can see the dot at a hundred yards in full daylight, I seriously doubt it's actually under 5 mW.

I don't think the legs are stainless either. Look galvanized at a quick glance. Will hit it with a magnet tomorrow, and look for my spray galvanizing shortly thereafter.

This was not a high end restaurant, so I didn't expect to find high end stuff. I suspect some of the stuff was used when it arrived. Some nice Metro stuff in the kitchen, lower brands elsewhere, which I bought.

As a potting table, it may outlast my wooden one.

Hmm I'd have thought the opposite that they never meet the claimed specs.

This is my first green laser of any description, and in reading, they do work better in daylight than red, because we can see it batter. I was shocked though at how visible it was.

No marking that I have found yet and its missing the factory covers, caps and such, but it looks very much the same.

Getting close to dark; that should be real interesting!

So a while back I sold a guy a set of Craftsman RHFT ratchets. We were talking for a bit and I mentioned I'm an SK guy. He said he just got a bunch of SK from someone and didn't have space for it. I expressed interest it in and he said he would sort through everything and let me know what all he had. That was back in February. Yesterday we met up and I had another set of the RHFT ratchets, plus some older RP stuff and a few other things I was looking to get rid of quickly and $80 cash for his SK stuff. I think I definitely got the better end of the deal. Two green metal box sets are complete, the metal rail metric set is missing a couple but I may have them and the one 1/4 set I have the ratchet and extensions to fill it out but I think I need a 3/8 socket. There's a lot of SAE, but a decent amount of metric as well. 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 drive stuff too. Massive SAE combo wrenches, just a huge amount of SK in general.

Spent Friday driving around a local neighborhood yard sale, easily 50 homes.
Most were a bust.

But glad I did.
Inside their open garage on a table there was a coffee can with a Ridgid tubing cutter and another one I didn't recognize, had a price sticker of $2.00 for both.
When I looked closer at the other cutter it was Blue-point.
I asked if there were any other tools & she said. "look in those two boxes underneath that table, everything there is 50 cents or a dollar".
So for 25 bucks I came home with this:

Another Boy Scout Plumb head nice, handle split, another Estwing hatchet that has been ground down almost an inch. (and note how the missing leather rings were replaced with copper wire soldered in place).
A Channellocks 420, stamped Champion DeArment , and a Utica 21-4 Jewelers loop pliers.

I didn't mean that yours was a cheap-as POS, it's that they all are. Yes, it will probably serve your needs just fine, but in a commercial kitchen, where children are moving them by dragging one end around, they need some remodeling.
