That, mounted on a pole, is for managing power lines, I imagine like managing a snake with a hook.

I was thinking on a pole for managing stock up high in a store. like retrieving fan belts on hooks up high.

I've had a kids hoe handle where the blade busted off (my son's set when he was 3 or 4? so 30 odd years in use) and I use it for a long reach all the time.

I changed “power” to “telecom” in my reply. Someone tried to explain it to me last year, I think. (EDIT - I think it was @bmwrd0 ) Some are marked Bell System, and online I see “drop line cope hook” as a description.

The only time I would ever see one of those pole tips is when I went back for pole climbing certification. Which we barely did by the time I was there, as the bucket trucks were a phone call away if you did I&R, like me.

Basically, you used one to throw a line over a span, pull a wire from under a house, or anything you needed reach for.

Had an interesting weekend. I went to an Estate sale, as mentioned above, on Friday, then we returned on Sat, Sun, and Monday as well. In between we hit a moving sale and a rare Sunday sale a short walk away.

Let’s start easy with the Sunday walking distance sale. Opened at 9, was there first at 9:03. Lots of nice stuff I really didn’t need, but I found a box of Fein OMT accessories that had a set of profile sanders in it. Everything else was stuff I had, maybe a slight upgrade, but didn’t really need. About to wander off, then saw a BNIB set of Shox headphones. Guy's son bought it for his video gaming, did not work well for that, so I got them cheap, and headed home.

PXL_20250629_230342133-X2.jpg

The Sat moving sale was the second weekend, but this time they included dad’s tools, some nice vintage stuff. Mostly left side of the next pic, two bundles of clamps, sharpening stones and a strop, Nicholson Vixen file, a box of Thorsen, mostly there but no driver, it will show up in the appropriate thread for ID help, and a BNIOB Bostitch Brad nailer, which fortunately uses longer brads than my existing one. It’s a magnesium body, so really lightweight.

Back to the big estate sale on Saturday, now weekend 2, but only the third day the shop is open. Got there reasonably earlier, hoping to find the rest of the Beall Tool threader (no joy), but also for more poking about, as the top layer of stuff was all moved, but also they were dealing more. The seller remembered me, and still had my Garden Weasel handle that I didn’t get a pic of Friday. Other finds included some fine wire, three way pneumatic manifold, plate glass for Scary Sharp, MKE side handle, hope it fits, swivel knife, snap ring pliers, Proto pin spanner, wire gage, couple of General reversible scribers, 5/16 bits, hook spanners, and a ¿Zamak? hand wheel. Air o can refillable spray can, and a bunch of portable storage items. Total outlay still reasonable.
PXL_20250628_211923257-X3.jpg

Went back mid day Sunday, they promised "by the box" pricing. Very thin attendee crowd, and still another layer of stuff stripped away, some stuff relocated. Here is my pile of boxes, contents detailed below. I was tossing things in a few different boxes, trying to keep the weight carriable, and not be too greedy. At checkout time, he looked in two boxes, and gave me a lump price, well under where I said I’d be happy for the lot. Note the wood, and the blue pneumatic hose in the bed behind the bag
PXL_20250701_010135034-X3.jpg
Inside the Proto 19” box labeled concrete bits, there was one nasty bit left that I took out, and replaced it with 3 electrical devices, PIR switch, big fan controller, GFCI, scraper blades, and all the pneumatic connectors from an AkroBin, two bucket handle covers, and a couple of drill bits. The custom name plate order form was from 1996. Also a piece of Delrin looking material.
PXL_20250702_001715623-X3.jpg

The box labeled Euro hinges was full of Kreg bits, jigs and templates, but the box itself was a Millers Falls, so bonus points there. Will need more research on what it was from.

PXL_20250702_001237598-X3.jpg

Next up is the Die Grinders box, which amazingly, held die grinders, an older MKE, and an older Craftsman Pro, which runs with a very ozonated smell. Also had some bits. Since I’ve never used one, no idea what to expect, but it’s gotta have more guts than the Dremel. There were pneumatic tools there, but without a compressor, I knew to ignore them.

PXL_20250702_000548264-X3.jpg
PXL_20250702_000503215-X3.jpg

The big tote was almost anything light, L to R, 5 boxes of pneumatic fasteners, 4 of 5 fit my existing guns, one box of staples is too big. The vintage green lab specs box has more masonry bits in it. Next up a center punch tool, several spiral brushes, qt paint can mixer, another square bench dog (#2 of 3?), hose handle to make it easier to use your dust collector as a vacuum, pile of non woven abrasives, 80, 120 and 240 grit 1x30” belts, two Kreg drill guides, ruled stop tool, a lifetime supply of tap magic, and a book.

PXL_20250702_004958652-X3.jpg

And finally the end of Sunday’s purchases, a bag of electrical plates, and a vise made for centering pen blanks for turning projects.

PXL_20250702_052914234-X3.jpg

Gonna start a new post for Monday.

So, during my rummaging Sunday, my wife was chatting up the ES company owner, offering to take some of the books and clothes to local places so they don’t end up in the trash, and donate the sheets and blankets to local dog shelters. He was a nice kid, and had been giving good prices, so staying on his good side was beneficial. There was also a handmade oak toy box left, so we bought that for a great price. If my grandson can’t use it there or here, will give it to one of the families in the neighborhood. She also found a Makita sharpening stone I forgot to grab Sunday. As they were now down to "it’s all going into the garbage", he was showing stuff we could have, and just chatting about stupid stuff, like how to move stupid heavy stuff by yourself. There was a welding table left, 4’x4’, 1/2” plate, 3 or 4” pipe legs, my buddies estimated it at 750-1000#. He’s like, if you can take it, it’s yours. I called my blacksmith friends, they are trying to find someone who might be able to come get it. Gave him some hints on how to get it out if he has to, without a forklift. He also offered me the dual rotator rusted to hell but functioning vise from the welding table, but I said no. MLW asked why he didn’t take it, he has a Wilton and Parker at home…, and several others. I did grab a few other items, a two step ladder, a bunch of little red boxes which will fit on my ULine organizer from several weeks back, and the hardware in them. Lots of heavy fittings, StrongTie, some weld on hinges and hinge parts.

And we were also given a dog pen to donate to the shelter we work with, two totes of blankets and sheets, and two plastic dog crates, again to donate. The truck was full Monday night. We will be watching his future sales.

That's cheating (both with the Bobcat and pulling the fence down)!!! Work smarter, not harder!

I used to remove a cedar picket fence panel at my parents last house, so I could get my tractor into the back yard during leaf season. They balked at first, then when they saw me clean out their backyard in one hour vs. a day (or more) with leaf blowers, rakes and manual bagging; they said I was brilliant.

Thankfully, the fence was constructed with hex-head lag bolts, so I bought a bit for my Makita cordless drill and made that part of the job even easier.

That job alone was the main reason I originally bought my utility trailer, which comes in handy all the time for taking free stuff from work!!!

...speaking of which, I have some more free goodies lining up for next week. Steel under-counter drawers (made for lab bench use), only about 10 years old, look almost new (a few pieces may have minor dings).

As usual, they were about to throw them into a dumpster because they're partial pieces, don't think the auction house would deal with them, and want them gone now.

Certainly not Lista-quality, but would work great for under a work bench, drill press, etc. Everything seems to be 2-feet wide, so also quite modular.

(Edit: I looked up the catalog, and found a spec sheet. It appears that these are built from a combination of 18 gauge and 20 gauge steel. They are quite heavy for their size.)

I'll post pics once they're on my trailer.

Man I need to get caught up on some posts…

Estate sale 2 weeks ago on my lunch-

Super cool war time crate- apparently it held life savers? I’m interested in seeing if anyone knows the dates? It has these cool markings on it. Looks like someone mailed it home. This crate is smaller than a traditional apple/ fruit crate most folks are used to seeing

Also got the roofing nailer and the float as well… total cost of $15

Hit a sale yesterday that advertise, among a million other things "mill wright tools". And they did have them, but I do not need a 15" swing mag drill, along with a lot of like minded stuff. Anyhoo, I did find the following:

54631857377_80d2d52b83_b.jpg
Vintage welding goggles, some HHS, and a Buck Bros. gouge. And I spotted these off in a corner, and had to make room for them:
54632698536_c73bb80cbd_b.jpg
a pair of vintage Niehoff cabinets, very much worse for wear. Not sure if I can save them, but I figured at a buck each, I cannot lose much.

Rare Holiday yard sale, 2 advertised one was not worth the trip to go, so I didn't and the other was a maybe, and I'm glad I did!

Mostly clothes, one box of band instrument controls and cables, and a zippered case, I opened the case an it has a Fluke 73 ii in it with the cables in a semi open case. flicked it on adn seems to operate.. Asked "how much?" "Oh that's not ours, let me look it up and I'l give you a good deal!' - I'm mentally writing this one off, and after taking care of someone else, she comes back with "seems they go for $50 how about $20?" - "I can go $10" - "OK!" Deal!

Checked it out at home for AC and DC and it seems to work well! has auto sense for scale. Instruction manual not present but I've already downloaded one. and happy to know it uses std 9V batteries. I'll get a lithium now that they are available.

Fluke-ii-1.jpg

Fluke-ii-2.jpg

On my way out I paw through a "Free" box and got the bag of costume jewelry for SWMBO and the girls, and the tiny Lincoln Logs can because it made me smile.

Free-cost-Jewelery-Lincoln-Logs.jpg

Even funnier is that apparently made an outhouse for the cover!

I have picked up three Flukes like that, people just do not know what they can be worth, or don't even know that much. One I got for a buck, but needed to put a battery in it an use some spare cables, but it was worth it. Another for 10, and two for $25, including a model 179, which became my work meter when I did inspections for the PUC. Replacing the battery is more than most people want to do at a garage/estate sale, so you can hedge on them being dead, but if they look clean, they will be good usually.

There were finally a few sales around here!

54633156823_f4af54356b_o.jpg

That's all from four sales. One here in town, the others on the way to a big community sale up in Joseph, which turned out to be a total bust.

Hard to say what was the best deal of the day, but the big Rigid pipe cutter for $4, the free Craftsman folding rule, the $5 Western sheath knife and the $5 electric file are all contenders. The Western has some grinder marks on the flat of the blade, but I think I can cure that. The folding fisherman's is a Contento, made in Germany--it's in the de-rusto solution right now. Light meter is a Weston Master II, for a buck. The little--1 15/16" jaws--DP vise appears shop-made, but very well. It also appears to be stainless. The screw is left-handed.

I don't see mention of the box that looks like a Rope 5Jr punch? Or is that just old news?

Punch is a Whitney Jr. #5--missing most of the tooling. $5. Do we have a vintage punch thread?

I'm heading back out after lunch... in the opposite direction.

If you want all sizes, the factory has the set at a deal. I think their punch die set is a better deal than HJE even.

IIRC, the weak part of the imports are the punch/dies. And making sure that all of the adjustment points are snug (no side-to-side wobble). Actual RW punches seemed to work much better in either set of handles.

Well, I set out with the intention of going "down valley" after lunch, but the insane tourist traffic drove me back.

I hit one more sale in town that wasn't a bust:

54633453745_b9027d3ef9_o.jpg

Been a good day for punches. The Picket #240 Rapid Rule engineer's scale was a nice pick. The flat bar--which isn't flat, the shaft is concave for extra stiffness--is a no-brand Made in Taiwan--but I like the design and it feels hefty in hand.

$5 for that lot.

I found the RW website, but don't see the punch and dies set anywhere. Do you have a link?

I found it amusing that the site claims this punch is "easy to carry in a pocket". Their pockets must be the same ones the Coleman Pocket Stove was designed for.

Man, Timm and Mr. W. killed it! You both ****!

I see you got to the RW #5 reported in a later post.

Page for punches and dies:

is it magnetic?
I finally found the set of punches and dies at the RW site. $72 is a little more than I want to pay right now. If it was a shop necessity, sure, but it's more of a "that'll come in handy" thing. I'll shop around some--seems MSC has a better deal and maybe Eprey.

The vise is not magnetic--it only sticks to things clamped in the jaws. It is, however, mildly ferromagnetic--a magnet is attracted to it. The body, weakly so, the jaws and screw strongly, reinforcing my belief that its at least partially stainless.

I posted some detail pictures in the mega Vise thread.

On the #5 is this your first one?

I finally got enough hand punches to have a set for each size "just because"; since I hate changing punches and dies all the time. They take a whole drawers in my Kennedy roller for metal working tools.

Only slightly less than a new kit in the (plastic) box with the tool and the dies at $112

I had to Google it I couldn't find it directly on their site something's broken since last time I was there. I'm sure it was an upgrade to their software. 😬

So sounds like probably no joy in the magnetic chuck.
Nah, works just fine:

I finally got enough hand punches to have a set for each size "just because"; since I hate changing punches and dies all the time. They take a whole drawers in my Kennedy roller for metal working tools.
I have no idea how often I'll be using this. If I can find an affordable set, I'll buy. If not, no biggie--I'll come across some someday.

I just spent the remainder of my "fun money" for the week on belts for the Eastwood mini belt sander.
