For you pro welders - How well do those "welders shirts" work?
I’m hardly even a welder but I asked one of our pipefitters about that last year and he told me he doesn’t really bother with the FR shirts as the regular ones are just as resistant to welding sparks. The only difference is that the FR is more resistant to, well, flames. He said hot molten chunks of metal will burn through FR the same as non FR material. And after a few washes it’s all the same anyway.

Meh I wear flops a lot on the farm. When I'm mixing feed or doing stuff where foot safety is important I'll toss the work boots on but usually I'm in flops in the summer. I get so dang hot so anything (within reason) that I can do in flops and shorts I do. I know I can drop something on my toes and that's bad and blah blah blah but I'm not one to rush though things and make mistakes and have yet to come close to an "Oh **** I should be more careful" in the last 15yrs.

Working on the wheeler in the shop was right there on the edge of "should I or shouldn't I" and shouldn't I won out this time :dunno:

Same here. I wear Chacos, so a little better for walking than flip-flops. I keep the boots handy and put them on when I feel the need--spraying, mowing, anything that makes metal slivers (metal slivers in the foot ****).

I did have my foot run over by a power-pallet jack a number of years ago. If I'd been wearing hard-toe boots, I would have had to replace a $500 pair of boots and gotten no benefit from it, as the front wheel of the pallet jack--loaded with full kegs of beer--went over my foot behind where the cap would be. Somehow, no bones were broken, but lots of soft-tissue damage that would still have happened, boots or no.

The throne was allegedly forged from the many kegs that had been surrendered to Beerhippie in his conquest by the lords who had offered their fealty, though the actual number of the kegs is still ongoing...
Honest, no usable kegs were harmed in the making of the Throne of Kegs.

It was requested by the Powers That Be for visitors to take selfies in out front. Welding all those kegs together in 105F weather... you can bet I wasn't wearing full gear! Of course, the PTB then located it where it's in full sun for most of the afternoon--meaning you can cook eggs on the seat on hot days.

I once made a pretty full set of armor from kegs--breastplate, backplate, helmet, shield and skirt--for a Halloween costume--The King Of Beers. Our boiler inspector talked me into selling it to him (at a good profit) for his son--before I realized no one had a picture of it. :(

explain if I can do this, make sure you explain it to me like I am five
These are little FM radio transmitters that you can plug a USB (or SD) card into with recorded MP3 music on it. Something similar has been around for decades for listening to a Sony Walkman or CD player in a rig that only has radio. The transmitter can be tuned to several different frequencies to find one that isn't used in your area. They run off power from what we used to call the cigarette lighter port.

I've only seen FM--I don't know if anyone ever made one for AM.

Lots of available options and none are particularity expensive. you can use the USB mem stick like I do, or have it tap your phone on Bluetooth.

Google search: bluetooth fm transmitter for car

One from Amazon:

They've gotten a bit smaller and snazzier that what we used with our Walkmans back in the day!

I dead-headed lilacs in the pub outdoor seating are this morning. One of our lilac trees is sickly. I found this in some of the terminal twigs:

Looks like some kind of cane borer to me. Any tree experts out there?

I then put out minor brush fires around the brewery and pub for most of the rest of the day. Explained again that plugging three microwave ovens into the same 20A circuit blows the breaker. Had to argue about that for a while.

After all that, I made a storage solution for my 1/2 X 18" mini-sander belts:

Hot as Hades today--high of 101 F by my outdoor thermo. Sitting here in the blast of the Porta-Cool Cyclone 3000 swamp cooler with a cold beer feels much better.

Got out to the garage tonight after the old daily grind and decided to get busy. I hung 2 of my Hosetract hose reels from the rafters. I did this so I knew where I had to do the drops from my new garage hose line kit.

I also decided to tear into my Gleason Reel cable-master wire spool. I just need to get some wire at the hardware store tomorrow and spool it up. Not bad to get all 3 for free.

Just a little cleaning and it will be good.

Made a mattress support platform for our antique 1890's/1900' era cast iron bed. Pretty simple construction. Just needed to make a few notch cuts to clear the four heavy cast iron castings that the steel rails drop into. The wife stores lots of stuff under it, so the platform has to be strong.

I also painted a coat of white semi-gloss on it (per the wife's request.) She says this will help it blend in when she puts the bed skirt (??) and bedding on the mattress. ....OK, whatever, what the heck do I know.

Yeah but you still need a functioning antenna to pick up the FM signal from said device…

I hope you used a sander to take the edges off that plywood. They will shed long splinters that go right through a sheet and bedding.

Grandson departed on Monday so Tuesday was, clean, fling, put away. Went to move the riding mower and no forward or reverse. Shoved it into a corner, will look at the belt later. Grabbed the tractor and shoved the tilt trailer into the shop for a closer inspection of the hydraulic mechanical. I mentioned it here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/hydraulic-cylinder-tilt-aluma-trailer.548018/
Further inspection ensued and conclusions made. Spent about an hour on the phone-Aluma buys this and installs this but no maintenance or specification in their trailer literature. More phone calls, more hold let me get, *** on the line. Finally found someone to answer questions. Moved the trailer out of the shop and put the tractor away. More work coming, ran the vacuum and shut it down.

Yes, all sanded edges, no splinters, no worries plus its sealed/painted white. This is the 2nd one I've made for this old bed in the past 40 years we've owned it. My wife takes care of the rest. Never any problems.

A random storm blew through last night. Caused the power to flicker. The UPS in the garage tripped the GFCI it was plugged in to. This GFCI is old and has been slowly tripping easier and easier. I guess it finally gave up as the reset button no longer exists and the spring was hanging off the front of the outlet.

I currently have 50' of extension cord running to another outlet for the networking stack so we have internet. I'll pick up a new GFCI later today replace the one that went out. I'll grab an extra and keep it in the garage.

I know plugging UPS into GFCI isn't the best thing to do, but this GFCI runs the outlets on the front porch too, so I don't want to remove it.

I never even knew these things existed. Mercy. So, is it kind of like the old sirius radios, tune in to the dead fm frequency, but as you drive, if you're travelling, and it picks up a signal, you have to find a different frequency. That was always a big pain in the ***. If that's the case, I won't bother.

Having a spare is a good thing!
Does the wiring allow you to move the GFCI one outlet farther down the line?
I haven't looked at a GFIC for this but you may be able to have one outlet non-GFIC and the other and down stream with GFCI? If not swap the box for a dual duplex and done...

I've been running mine all over N CA. and have yet to need to "switch channels". tons of radio channels all over the central valley...

Local code says all outlets in the garage should be on a GFCI. So moving it downstream wouldn't be good.

If the GFCI was dying then I'd not worry about it. if the UPS is tripping a good GFCI, then its time for a new UPS...

BTW I've had all my networking gear on a UPS for almost 20 years, I've sat through power outages for hours on the UPS. Using my inside UPS and Ltop batteries to keep going.

I just was blasted by somebody's FM transmitter yesterday in a parking lot. They were using the same frequency as the local radio station I usually have on.

Updated my post as well!

Between the UPS on the server rack in the shop and the UPS on the networking stack in the garage, I have about 45 minutes of full up time during an outage before the servers shutdown. Then I have another 15 minutes until the internet drops.

Unfortunately, my live TV dies with the server rack currently. I use an OTA plugged into a network tuner that streams via Emby to the TVs and phones in the house. Once the server shutsdown, the stream dies. When weather is really bad, I usually have one of the news channels on with the storm trackers.

We've lived here for 6+ years now and the GFCI has had a UPS plugged into it for most of that time. It's only started being an issue sometime in the last year.
Get and install a GFCI breaker. They last longer and work better than the outlets.

If you have any VFDs running off the GFCI, you need one with a longer delay. IIRC, 100mS vs 10 mS.

Yeah, but that usually only happens on longer trips though. I have also had my SiriusXM eclipsed by somebody else’s FM transmitter in town but only briefly 😂

Sometimes I hear voices, when someone drives by and my hearing aids decide to pair with their phone. It's a hoot in rush hour traffic. The things people say when they think they're in a private space.
