Homemade Dust Collector?

Been kicking this around about make a dust collector. Not talking about piping but dust collector itself. Some place somewhere I have seem someone who made their own using barrels or maybe trash cans. I was wondering if someone could share their system or plans about how you made your system. Or maybe know of website that can provide some ideas or plans. I don’t mind rolling DC to machine that’s being used, but I like to pipe in my most def machines such as TS, miter saw, drum sander, and planer. Thanks for your thoughts

This is the dust collector I made for my basement shop. I was limited in what would fit because of the low ceiling, so I decided to build my own. My shop doesn't have any external windows, so it is important to collect as much of the harmful dust as possible.



The blower assembly is a Bernardo RV-350 Blower. The blower is mounted directly to the Oneida Steel 5-inch Super Dust Deputy Cyclone. The new version is black, but mine is cream colored. The collection can is a plastic 35-gallon trash can with a 19mm plywood top and a rubber gasket to seal the top to the can.

I also bought a pair of Wynn 35B222NANO Filter Cartridges and a pair of Wynn 18FP30 Filter Pans that attach to the bottom of the main filters. This makes routine cleaning the filters a bit easier, unless something bad happens and they fill up. The plenum is home made using whatever plywood offcuts I had in the garage. There is room below the filters for my 100L compressor.

I would look up videos from Marius Hornberger, Matthias Wandel and John Heisz.

Its a lot of work... Do you want a dust collector project or a dust collector to work on other projects?

The harbor freight unit is pretty good with some relatively simple upgrades

The new one seems pretty good without needing anything. 2 micron filter is pretty decent.

This is my inexpensive set up currently.

I started with a 2 hp 240v collector, as pictured, built a new frame on casters and added an Oneida super dust deputy cyclone and a Rubbermade Brute garbage can. So far only a couple of cups of dust in the filter side and 3 garbage cans of dust/shavings collected. Easier than building a cyclone from scratch, and cheaper than a factory made cyclone unit, even a used one.

Built this one from a hf unit, hard piped to all the tools with shut offs at each one. Added a remote fob to turn on and off and very easy to empty. Almost zero dust passes the filter.

Here is a thread from a few years ago, not much interest in dust collectors. No plan just made it up as i went to fit the parts. There are allot of dust collectors that started out with the hf 2hp collector.

I have a Ridgid shop vac connected to a 5 gal bucket with a Cyclone lid on it. I built a stand for them with wheels on it so I can roll it around my small shop when needed. Works good.
