Okay, a couple weeks ago I asked about a ceiling fan for my garage with a bright light. Somewhere around 5000 lumens. I've had no luck finding anything, so I started thinking outside the box. What thought would you guys have about hanging a light weight high bay light from a ceiling fan? I can get an 8000 lumen high bay light that only weighs 1.3 pounds and hangs from a hook.

I was thinking get a fan, use the light kit blank. Use the center hole(or drill one, if the blank doesn't have one) and install an eye bolt. Drill a second hole for wiring. Connect high bay light to existing wires for ceiling fan light kit, hang light, done. Probably a second hole in the blank with a grommet for the wiring.

Seems like a whole bunch of fiddling around when it's probably easier to just wire in a couple fan boxes.

As an alternate, if you must remove your 2x2's to put in the fans, you could add in a few commercial downlights to get your lumens back.

Good luck,
CD

If you mount any lights above the fan be very aware of where you place them. Depending on where you are in the shop, with the fan spinning, if the fan blades are between you and the light you will get a strobe effect. It happens on our patio when we use the ceiling lights instead of the lights on the fans.

This is exactly why I want fans with bright lights. The location of my current lighting boxes doesn't really allow for adding an additional ceiling fan location that won't put the blades below the lights unless you are standing directly under the fan. And I don't really want to get up in my attic and move 40 inches of insulation to find the wiring to put in or move the existing boxes.

I’d avoid hanging a high bay light from a ceiling fan. Even if it’s lightweight, it can stress the fan’s motor or mounting hardware over time. Plus, the spinning blades could cause annoying flickering or strobing effects. It’s much safer to install the light using a proper ceiling box designed for fixtures. 👍
