I haven't made it to too many yard sales this year, but my dad stopped at one the other day and brought back a broken chainsaw. He paid $5 for it. I joked that I would double his money and he said $20, so I took the deal.

Stihl 020T
1000017247.jpg1000017246.jpg1000017248.jpg

It had been sitting for years in an old barn. The chain was rusted tight, even after two days of soaking in evaporust, and I couldn't get the links to move. It also needed some carb work. I cleaned on it for hours, It looked much worse when he brought it over.

$42 in parts later, and this thing fired up and runs great!

These are basically the same as the 200T with a few minor differences, and highly desirable top handle pro saws.

You ****! And your Dad drives a hard bargain, LOL!

What parts did it need?

I don't know why my photos won't load. I'll try this again. All of these were $10 each. The Argon bottle is full. The battery is 790 CCA two years old and shows full charge. The diamond polishing disks are 50 grit up to 8000 grit.

Working now, and You definitely ****...

On Saturday, I decided to head down to the far end of the state, as there is a supposedly giant swap meet there on Sunday. And, on the way I was able to hit a few sales that at least looked good in the ads.

The first stop was the estate sale of a retiring dentist, who was the son of a dentist. So, lots of vintage dental equipment, so interesting tooling, etc. I was, however, getting there on the second day, so, unsurprisingly, it was pretty picked over. I did end up getting this for a very good price though:
54698488437_0c2c212aff_b.jpg
a nice National brand dental chest. Needs cleaning, but that is OK.

After that I hit a few sales that ended up with nothing I was interested in, but I did find the two Chrome Molybdenum DBEs and a older Xacto knife at the tail end of an estate sale.
54699573734_026dd8611e_b.jpg
After that, I hit a Restore, were I picked up a Goodell Pratt push drill, with some of the original bits still in it!, a Stanley driver, SK metric hex key set (incomplete) and, as it was 75% off, a P&G valve gapper. On of the best things about this particular Restore is that they seal up any sets they get in thick plastic bags, which tends to keep sets together and whole. So I was happy to find the P&G set, as this is what it looked like:
54699336081_cc1d7ddf60_b.jpg

As far as the swap meet, it was only so-so, although I did manage to find the following:
54698527692_19d0cbc49f_b.jpg
Furnas drum switch, Jacobs #20n, Stanley vise, Lufkin micrometer set. Everything, except the vise, needs a bit of work, but that just means I got a good deal! That, and that Jacobs should net enough to pay for the whole lot.

So, a pleasant trip, where I found a nice brewery for dinner, stayed at a cool retro hotel, had a good breakfast, and generally had a good time.

Those top drawers would be perfect for storing taps and cutting bits.

Top driver is "CHAMPION" Spark plugs? Not seen a tool co. with this name
Jewelers box Spin tite & Champion driver.jpg
“Champion” or “Champion Pattern” is likely a trademark, possibly unregistered. I don’t think it has anything to do with the spark plug brand. The 1924 Union Hardware catalog shows them on pp6-7.
The 2-piece ferrule design - sometimes brass-steel, sometimes steel-steel - is signature, as is that specific wood handle profile. I think there is a patent, but I don’t have the info at the ready.
EDIT - relevant patents 214785 783023 539155
At least four versions are shown in the 1923 Winchester tools catalog, pp16-17. All the Winchester-branded ones I have (3) have the brass component, and do not have “Champion “ stamped on the shank.
IMG_6804.jpeg
I probably see five or six of the steel-steel “Champion” screwdrivers for every Winchester-branded one. On Sunday, a flea vendor asked me if I was a tool collector, then showed me a brass-steel ferrule Winchester, but it looked like the wood part had been turned down more like a file handle, and his prices are higher than I like to pay, even when he isn’t aware of a tool’s collectibility.

It needed a pivot link for the brake (which I had), the carb needed rebuilt as it was gummed up, and it needed a new chain. I cleaned the air filter and fuel filter, cleaned the entire saw, and that was it. It runs great and oils great.

Interestingly, my daughters generation is really into fabric arts.
Odd, my wife is trying to give away her machine, hadn't had much luck but I think one of her younger workers will take it.
the spin tite has the size, no maker, but a really comfortable fat handle.

The thick handled nut driver looks like a Bridgeport, and they used to mark on the handle itself.

Thanks for the references LS! I had not spotted the 2 piece steel-steel ferrule, but I think I have at least one other two piece ferrule - I need to get my drivers inventoried...

This one has a really nice condition tip - most of these I have to "sharpen"

Thanks for that info, and yes I found the remnants of some marking, Not sure how wel this **** camera wil do on a closeup. I'm really fighting this POS:

I think I see the "ep" of "Bridgeport"

Does "3476-7" make sense for the part No.?

EDIT: Pic didn't take:

Things have been up and down around here this summer, haven't been able to get to any really good tool sales. A lot of th garden variety sales have been doing the baggy thing, i.e. dumping a handful of wrenches or screwdrivers in a bag instead of individually pricing everything. Sometimes you can make out what's in the bag, sometimes not. I got lucky with a $2.50 bag of sockets a couple of weeks ago, it have 5 SK sockets, a couple of Craftsman 10mm and a Sears socket.

This weekend, I decided to take a chance on this $10 baggy.

An interesting selection
Vlcheck (Cleveland, OH?) 3/4, 11/16, 7/16
Some misc wrenches, including the 8 at the bottom which I haven't cleaned up yet, so I can't read the mfg. They do look slightly like some of the older Vlcheck stuff on the Wikipedia page.

20250805_150426.jpg

One wrench that really caught my eye was this one. I assume it's part of an early auto kit set, but I didn't see any of it's other member there.

I stopped by the last day of another sale, they didn't advertise any tools, but the ladies that run these sales are really nice and always give me great deals, even early in the sale. I always try to stop by if I can, even if they didn't advertise anything I want.

It turned out to be $10 bag day, so I filled a bag with some select tools.

Box of HF gloves - not pictured
Some generic ratcheting bit drivers
Durex bit driver
Misc Craftsman scre drivers
A bit shooter
Screw started, no markings
Digital Multi-meter, don't know if it works, I just want the test leads
Two boxes of misc electrical connectors
SK wrenches 13/16, 2-11/16, 5/8, 13mm
The SAEs should complete a set I'm putting together
D-Jtools 15mm
KMArt 12mm
Craftsman
Is that a Bufter or Buffet 5/8?
DIN895 13-17
14-10 I can't make out.
2 - Pittsburg 1/4" wobbly extensions
Set of small files, bag is dirty but files haven't been used
misc clamps
misc bits
Keyboard vac/blower
Snap-On battery clamp pliers

OK, last post, probably for awhile, we have family coming to stay for us in a couple days.

This was an estate sale that my fiance went to, and I taggged along. I didn't expect to find anything, but it turned out well.

It was 50% off day, so I was surprised how much stuff was left. A young lady was there picking through the tools when I got there, she said her husband needed tools so she was picking up a bunch of stuff for him. She had a good eye for tools, so I doubt that he'll be disappointed.

Ryobi string trimmer, this used to be their top of the line model, it included a litium battery and the smart charger $15
Ryobi hand vac old model $5
Ryobi drill old model $5
Ryobi right angle drill old model but never used $10

Everything else was $1 each
Dewalt clamps
battery wrench
string trimmer string
Circuit tester -new
tape measure
Craftsman screwdriver
Stanley pliers
misc Craftsman wrenches
I hate paying more than $.50 for CFTSM wrenches, but everything else was cheap
Craftsman 10"
Diamond 8"
Random 3/8 ratchet and socket

20250805_161226.jpg
I pulled this toolbox out a shed in the backyard, $6 for the box and everything in it.

I REALLY like the oiler!
Craftsman speeder looks like new!
Mostly Craftsman sockets with a couple Wards thrown in
A few other odds and ends

20250805_161618.jpg

But what really got my interest were these Ford wrenches.

That will be my new tactic when shopping. Loudly exclaim " Hey I saw some Snap On tools in the shed...in the basement...over there...at the other sale on 123 Main St"

You have to be sly on that - you tip some kid to say "Hey dad did you see the SO tools over at XYZ? to a total stranger, and then run off as kids do... leave your hands clean!

Sorry guys, I was working outside all day and was pretty lightheaded.
Of course the cold beers might have had something to do with it as well...
Damn the neighbor with the beer fridge...

Because of my color definition issues, I can't read most of the label, the only thing I can make out is Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Last I looked at the guys running through research; I think they determined those Auto Kit Open+Box to be from the JP Danielson Company. The notch in the recessed size window stamp is different from the oval track, Barcalo size stamped windows.

No, sadly work got in the way and I couldn't get to any sales. Garage is a mess due to having most of the tools/equip. I carry from my truck ,now scattered as they don't all fit in the rental. I have to be selective with what I have on a job currently.

Estate sale ($50): 66" KING 66 barrel bag?; Weaver B4 scope on a .22 tip off base w/ mounting plate. Crosman 1400 .22 cal pellet gun (1st variation); Tillotson Marples wood brace - self action; Stanley 113 compass plane (2nd gen) and...

I think it's a barrel cover, but 66" is pretty long. The weaver sight is cool. I'd love to figure out how to mount it to the pellet gun. What a fantastic looking gun. I love the stubby barrel. As always, needs seals. Wish me luck. The Marples has a through crack, but hey that's why it's reinforced :) The 113 also has problems as the square end on the front sole rod is broken (see pics).
Screen Shot 2025-08-06 at 9.24.08 PM.png

... this Roberts power stretcher w/ trimmer and cushion back trimmer, which if I knew how heavy it was would have probably said no.

Screen Shot 2025-08-06 at 9.32.42 PM.pngScreen Shot 2025-08-06 at 9.44.46 PM.png

Missed this Outers Gunslick Shotgun kit (410 Ga.) and Crosman Copperhead .22 cal pellets.

Pretty sure your Crosman has a barrel shroud over the actual barrel--just needs some drillin' and tappin' for the scope base. Being a pneumatic, it should work fine with the old Weaver.

Stopped at a couple small sales in town. Not much in the way of tools, but did manage to find a pair of Klein strippers and Utica R2291 pliers for $0.75 each. Peeled off the price sticker and the Uticas are Bell System marked.

My wife and I were talking about a heavier duty Sewing Machine than what she has (plus I don’t want to mess hers up learning). Found this Singer 301A for $10.
Wife had already taken the plate under the foot off to clean it by the time I took this photo, but it runs 👍

Started trying to catch up, saw this

Last weekend, I stopped by a small garage sale and saw a small red toolbox with a $5 price tag. One daughter just purchased her first house back East and I planned on bringing her a surprise household box of tools at Thanksgiving, so this looked like the perfect size toolbox (she prefers smaller sized offerings!). It turned out it was full of a few Lectrolite, Snap-on, Crecent, Herbrand, Armstrong and other wrenches, one Snappy ratchet and other miscellaneous hand tools. The three larger wrenches (Plomb and Williams) cost me an extra $3. Some of these might have to stay with Dad!
and gave up. On so many levels. Fred, you ****. :)

On Friday I finally went by the ReStore again and picked up a few things - ETF wrench, Channellock tongue-and-groove pliers, two identifiable wrenches and two unidentifiable ones, a pair of damaged Boker pliers that I picked up in part because I wanted to take them home and compare the handle pattern to my Krauters, and a tiny old Lufkin combination square.

(Possibly not tiny. But 9" is the smallest I've seen on not-minature tools.)
PXL_20250801_213913974~2.jpg

And then on Tuesday I found a kitchen mincer on the side of the road (actually atop a community mailbox). The benefits of a walking commute. It spent all day sitting on my desk and no-one at the office looked at it twice.
