Help Understanding Release Valve on My Broken Hydraulic Jack

Hi everyone,

I’m new here on Garage Journal and already grateful for the knowledge you all share. I’m hoping you might help me figure out what’s going on with my hydraulic jack.

The jack has stopped lifting entirely. It doesn’t build or hold pressure, and the handle feels like it’s pumping with no real resistance. Based on what little I know, I suspect the release valve might be the culprit.

When I turn the handle to close the valve, nothing changes — the jack still won’t lift or hold pressure. It’s as if the closing action has no effect at all.

I’ve fully removed and disassembled the valve assembly, and inside the bore where the valve sits, there’s a small ball bearing. I’m not sure if it’s sealing properly, if it’s worn, or if there’s a missing/damaged part preventing it from working. The parts don’t appear obviously broken, but the jack simply won’t lift any load.

Here’s what I’ve checked so far:

  • Fluid level is topped up with the correct hydraulic oil
  • No visible leaks in the ram or body
  • Pumping action moves fluid, but no lifting occurs
  • Valve parts (spring, seat, ball) look intact but I don’t know if they’re worn or mismatched
  • Closing the valve via the handle has no effect — the jack still behaves as if the valve is open

I’ve attached clear photos of the jack assembled and disassembled, including close‑ups of the valve parts and the bore they sit in.

If anyone can explain how this type of release valve is supposed to function, or suggest tests or fixes, I’d be extremely grateful. I’d much rather repair this jack than scrap it.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice — looking forward to learning from your expertise!

— Shahram

Here’s something important I discovered while experimenting:
If I press down lightly on the small ball bearing inside the valve bore, the jack will lift and operate normally. But as soon as I remove that pressure, the weight of the lift arm alone makes the jack sink back down. so the Ball bearing part is functioning i guess! :-S + i mistakenly wrote a spring in my original post, but there are and was no spring as you can se in pictures, yet the jack was functioning perfect.

You realize you are doing this wrong? Most new people with this type of problem send us a single picture of the jack wheel, very fuzzy, and say “my jack won’t lift, please help”.

Great pix and description, both of problem and work so far, I am sure some expert will be along soon, not just a smart @$$ like me. Welcome
