Cut List Optimizer - Very Handy Tool

Was using this at work today, thought I'd share here. If you have to create cut lists or calculate material yields, this is a fantastic tool. I also use it for calculating required materials to generate RFQs from material suppliers.

No affiliation, just a happy user. I have only ever used the free version, but if I did this all day long, I'd probably spring for the paid version.

I've used both the cut sheet and linear cut optimizers several times over the years. They are very handy.

I have used this or one similar. I wish it would optimize odd shapes, like triangles or other 'non even square" pieces. Any idea if the paid version has that capability?

Looking at the API documentation for the enterprise version, it doesn't look like it. parts have only a length and width, so everything has to be a rectangle. The generalized layout problem is a very hard problem, even for rectangles. Allowing arbitrary shapes increases the difficulty tremendously. There's software that does it, used for marker design in sewing factories, among other things, but it's very expensive or not terribly good (optimal layout wise, for whatever you're optimizing).

That is probably closer to nesting software for lasers. It is very hard to quickly populate a cut list with oddly shaped polygons.

Yeah @misterfixit the term you would want to look for is "nesting" optimization, there are some good ones out there but getting them to handshake with what you are using can get tricky
