Thinking about The Garage Journal Alliance...

So The Garage Journal has been growing and growing... In fact, we've grown more in the last 6 months than we have in the history of the site. Obviously, this is good news. More traffic means more content, better content, etc... It's good for everybody.

However, with the increased traffic I need to start thinking about ways to support it financially. With the Jalopy Journal, I started the HAMB Alliance. Essentially, the Alliance is an optional program that costs $50 per year. For that $50, you get a firewall tag (this is a vintage inspired deal started at Bonneville long ago), some pretty serious discounts from our participating vendors, as well as some other perks in the forum. The site as it is remains free... and the Alliance is not an obligation at all.

The whole idea came to me when I was first starting to learn about building old hot rods and customs. I read stuff like Street Rodder and Rod & Custom and noticed how the content seemed to be driven by the advertisers. For instance: If I read a tech article on how to bag a '65 Riviera they would use Air Ride parts and totally avoid the pitfalls of the installation. They made it seem so easy... And, of course, there would be an Air Ride ad on the next page.

This bothered me. I paid for the magazine, but I wasn't the customer. The advertiser was... and my needs seemed to be ignored.

As I was building my publishing company, I made a vow to myself that I would never allow my content to be controlled by advertisers. You'll notice that none of my forums feature advertising. Instead, we sell sponsor slots on our homepage and leave our forums clean.

That still left me with the problem of how to make money though... Web servers, bandwidth, and all of that kind of stuff starts to ad up... and this is, after all, a business...

Then, it occurred to me. If you have enough traffic and registered members, you can turn the table. Give the power to the content and make the reader the customer again. Instead of having advertisers pay me for exposure, I can give them honest exposure in exchange for discounts to my customers.

It might sound complicated, but it's not... and as we have proven on jalopyjournal.com, it works!

So, I'm thinking it's almost time to start the Garage Journal Alliance. Here are the basics:

1. First and foremost, the site remains free. If you don't become an Alliance member, you aren't penalized in any way.

2. For $50 a year, you become an Alliance member and ya get:

- an annual tool box tag... Something neat and metal to stick on your toolbox to show your allegiance. I'm still working on this in my head.

- Some minor perks in the forum such as increased private message storage and stuff like that...

- Discounts from our participating vendors.

Obviously, the important part here is the discounts. All vendors offering discounts to the HAMB Alliance will offer the same discounts to The Garage Journal Alliance. However, I will be actively seeking vendors that are more targeted towards guys that frequent The Garage Journal. You know... stuff like 15% off floor coverings from a major brand we all know and love, 10% off hand tools from another, etc...

I guess my reasoning for this post is to find out who you guys would like to see in the Alliance. Craftsman? Racedeck? Griots?

Let me know your thoughts.

I don't have much to add, but I want to thank you for not mucking up the forum and individual posts with ads. As a longtime Corvetteforum member who has seen it go from one guy's idea to a massive website purchased by Internet Brands it's pretty sad what it has turned in to. Advertising all over.... even in people's actual posts.

sounds like a good idea to me, help pay for the site and keep it nice and clean, plus those of us that can participate in the alliance would get a neat little sticker or plaque kind of thing to either stick on our toolbox or hang on the wall to show off to our friends who come over to hang out and drink our beer :)

I would also like to add that probably the vendors I would like to see, would be mainly the ones who sell stuff for restoring and fixing up a garage, like flooring shelving, paint and supplies, companies that sell that kind of stuff, and of course ones who sell hand tools and related things. Basically i guess i would rather have a 5% discount on a $50 tool than a 10% discount on a $500 air compressor that i cant afford anyways.

I'm the Treasurer at neow.net, a northeast four wheeling forum. We started off simply with donations and the generosity of our members. Then we moved to "if you donate you get the ability to upload pics right from your hard drive". After years of growing substantially we now have a site that costs $500+ a year to run. We recently pulled away the search feature and have it only for those who donate, I think Pirate off road, which is huge, does the same thing. Something to think about, ie, give those who donate some extra features.

That said, give me your paypal, I'll donate for nothing....just because.... this place is cool. :pimpflash

I am IN, I have just found this site a couple month ago, and I have LOVE it. There are some many GREAT people on here, willing to help and answer question. I am have been a member of a car forum for many years, and I have watched it go down the drain with lack of funding and the type of "kids" that are on there now.

I think it is a great Idea, and I am willing to donate. Hey, maybe have different levals of donations, which would give you different perks, maybe, or just make it across the board one amount so we are all on the same "playing" feild.

THANKS GJ:thumbup:

Oh yeah, We need a payapl account to send funds to.

I don't want to take away features from anyone. Like I said, this is a business... and I need to make a living... but, at the end of the day, what's most important to me is providing a service that people enjoy. I feel like if I do a good enough job doing that, the financials will come. So far, that methodology has worked really well for me. I'm pretty proud of that actually.

And donations aren't necessary... We aren't in dire straights at all. I'm just planning for the future really.

I like the Alliance solution for a number of reasons, but most importantly it has proven its value. I'm confident that if a guy gives me $50, I can give him more than that back in value over the course of a year.

A good example is with our HAMB Alliance. Coker tires is one of our biggest and best vendors. They give all members wholesale pricing. So, you spend $50 to become a member of the Alliance and the next time you order a set of tires for your hot rod, you save $100.

Obviously, I'm left with a member that is really happy that he got his value out of his $50 membership. AND, Coker benefitted as well... They got exposure on my site for the cost of a discount. This goes towards their advertising budget and their ROI is completely trackable. In the end, it works better than any ad in a magazine for them.

I also meant to say, with the build thread that I am running in the "Gallery" section, and the amount of pics I have put, I feel I owe something for all the band width I am using............:wtf:

The only problem is that search is such a good feature to have that restricting it would be really detrimental to the membership. Not to mention all that a savvy user would have to do is go to google.com and put their search terms in with "site:neow.net" and be able to search your forum. And then you have the risk of the person seeing a relevant advertisement on Google's website and them clicking Google's ad instead of continuing to your site.

Maybe make the timeout between searches and sending PM's lessened for alliance members?

Nope. I'm not interested in taking away functionality from folks. I always think about the guy that is having a rough year or something... and I just make it worse because he can't afford to search... ya know?

The PM one I can understand, but I've seen far too many forums enacting search engine timeouts which ended up hurting them. Users will start going to Google and any ad revenue will be lost.

I personally dislike it when web sites limit searches to something absurd like 30 or more seconds. A lot of times they do it so it doesn't put a load on the database because the equipment they are using can't handle it (ie too old). I also dislike it when forums make you register just to search it.

I believe he is saying to leave the present functions the same but decreasing the time between searches etc for alliance members.

As an additional perk you could have titles changed to:
GJ Alliance member" instead of just "Senior Member".

Add a search in free parking to alliance members?

Some of us are really senior members on fixed incomes. I have to scrounge for everything.

Yes that was my thought process for that post.

Just from my short time on the GJ I've gained so much , thanks to you Ryan first off ,and to all fellow GJ members. So by all means , Yes !

In some jeep forums I'm in, we have supporter levels that are voluntary. You can donate x to be a gold supporter, y to be a platinum, etc. All levels get a "xyz supporter" type thing under their avatar, everyone gets a membership card or toolbox tag kind of thing, and then higher levels get stickers, a tshirt, etc.

Yes that stuff costs, but stickers and tshirts can be decent advertising too. I get asked about my clubs all the time from t-shirts and decals on my jeep.

Just a thought. This can be done in conjunction with your advertiser thing too, which I think is a good idea.

If that's an option, I can definitely offer my business's services to the community if Ryan has an interest in it - it's exactly what we do.

Like the idea a lot. Thanks Ryan for sticking to your guns on keeping the site clean and member driven.
My only questions is the same as above. Would the benefits extend to Canadians. Meaning would it be something that is still worth it to me as far as savings with sponsors?
Although I am almost sold on the toolbox decal.

What about a free sticker and a minor perk such as a "Supporting Member" tag on a member's profile. Maybe add one sub-forum that is accessibile by supporting members only.

Also drop the price to $20 or $25 a year. I think you will make more money in total at the lower price because far more people will shell out $20 than $50.

I'm one of those Alliance members that recoup my fee at Coker's or the HotRod Shop every year.

I'd rather see a magnetic tag as it's easier to move from box to box.

ASE's toolbox tags are magnetic and have a hard time staying on the inside of the lid on my top box when it's closed.

So what about the members that are already Alliance members on the HAMB? Would there be an incentive for being Alliance members in both?

as tourque1st says....those of old wrenchs on fixed incomes need to choose where we spend our nickels...I am not opposed to jioning the alliance...I like the benefits and as a member of HAMB understand the need...

that being said can there be a discount for multiple allaincwe memberships...????

I'm in. This place is much cheaper than cable TV and sometimes more entertaining. :+1: on the magnetic tool box tag, moveable is good.

As for vendors somewhere like tooltopia or toolsource would be sweet. like free shipping or 10% off?

The only thing I'm worried about is that the place will lose its charm with continued expansion.
I also wouldn't want the alliance membership to become a class or status issue, we're all just tool junkies/sluts/whores in the end.
