Drove over to Earthwise Recycling to look at a couple boxes that appeared in their latest newsletter, but they all required more work than I wanted to do. I did find a couple items to bring home:
new arrivals 092425.jpg
Stanley 12-ounce claw hammer head, a broken handle I will fit to the Stanley head, and a 600 K-D valve spring compressor. 09/24/25

Friday Estate Sale - $15 all; not bad!:

2 Proto deep sockets, Proto 15 in punch, Proto LA extension, pipe tool, Burndy calipers - never seen any like this with cable conversions - , paint brush, Millers falls protractor head, a Renold chain breaker, made in England.

E1-Proto-BP-MF-burndy-brush-Chain-breaker.jpg

Nearly full DNA, Craftsman hatchet needs de-rusted, Conger Lantern Co battery lantern, the battery was inside, but was dead and rattled? I suspect the AA or AA batteries inside were falling apart... I'l test this, but this could be fun as an LED conversion? have to see what 6V LED lamps are available if it works.

Not much going on here unless your looking for baby clothes but the ditches are always free game so here's something at least interesting.
24.jpg
Found an interesting scene: $5 bill(soaked and bi-fold, currently dried and flattened), proto 1" drive extension(broken), 4½" hex bell end cap with 2-1/8" hex bolt and welded lock ring set with Y line anchor chain, and mystery steel bar that may have been part of the anchor for a set of the caps since the chain matches the holes(symmetrical).

I believe it may have been a workman's comp claim of a man named Jesse who was helping his high school chemistry teacher make some extra cash.

Also no clue what the bell end cap would've been for but I do intend to take it apart and clean it up despite the assumed issue. With a flat ID cap it might be a nice oil bottle for the man who uses half a gallon on cutting oil per job. Was hoping it'd finally give me an opportunity to use my 2-3/8" ratchet wrench but I think it'd at least be interesting to make something out of it. First step is figuring out what metal it is and if it would react to evaporust since the chains will most likely need a bath.

Edit: Cap is flooded with tar so that may explain its abandonment. Potentially leaked around the cap threads during/after emptying tank then hardened before they removed it leading to black thread sealer. Not really an issue if it was just loose since it's easy enough to dissolve especially outside but they could've assumed seal failed despite no apparent damage. Could've just been time to replace it by age alone too since it should've been self sealing to some extent so might not have been appreciable.

Also it is a tank cap, 2" hose would connect when plug removed and there would be a valve before the cap that would allow the liquid to display it's potential pressure when released. Also $500 new apparently. Not sure if that's machining/casting costs or if it has material(uncommon alloy) costs to justify. 23+ steps for machining from what I can tell but all basic for a machinist.

Looks like an extension that was used as a pry bar with a bigger extension? Is the female end a square broach (busted out)?
Sorry was referring to the flat stock with what looks to be broached oval holes(double circle or something resulting in slight point in centre) half under the $5 bill. Could've just been a tire flap plate for all I know but it fits the chain like it could be married parts to keep the chains from rubbing against the tank.

The round stock is a proto 1" drive extension with the side blown out on female drive end, probably used as a prybar or potentially loosely fitted ratchet anvil that binded and popped the weak point. All I know is it was sudden and fractured. Grain looks like when you snap the anvil off a ratchet. I assumed it was related to the bolt but everything's been in the ditch for months at least so it could've just been a congregation point for lost bits and bobs. Either way I'm sure the user wasn't happy with the result.

I hit one sale yesterday afternoon, and two this PM.
54814638673_124e25f090_b.jpg
Yesterdays sale was for a diesel mechanics compound, and by the time I got there it was pretty picked over, not sure by whom. Here I found a Central dial indicator in box (marked sears on the box), Snap-on and MATCO wrenches, two socket chisels, and a lineman's bolt bag. $4

First sale I hit today was a country place just south of town, and it was a disaster. But, that means good finds!
54814720715_e2babd9995_b.jpg
mill bit in tube, two Hinsdale sockets, and seven MT2 drill bits. $5

Final sale was a return to the helicopter/airplane mechanic sale from two weeks ago. Now they had opened up another hanger/repair shop. So, there were now 12+ band saws, from small Craftsman size to 16" Walker Turner sized and even larger! Also, two more lathes, and who knows what all. But I dug around, and found the following:
54814710715_6712c04f95_b.jpg
Crowntop ignition wrenches (with a Snap-on extra tucked inside!), Boker flat nose, two miniature cast iron pans, Mossberg 640 mag, Starrett no. 4 thread gauge, Lufkin and Ohio Art scales, channel scrub (?), center drill, two thread chasers, Snap-on m4 and Wizard spinner, 37/64" bit in tube, needle files, empty Simonds file box, valve cores, handle wedges, and sockets (APEX, SK, MAC, Bonney, SpeedMaster, unmarked universal), head of of t-handle, and a mill bit. Oh, and a Daisy 717. $2 for the Mossberg mag, $5 for everything else, and $25 for the 717. Daisy's of this series (7x7) are highly regarded target pistols, especially considering the cost. They regularly shoot equal to Steyer, FWB and other, high-end Euro pistols. Happy to have found this, as one was on my list to try out. Now I just need to find a box.

There was a community wide scheduled power shut down from 8 to 5 today so we got together with the neighbors for a trip to Nevada to check out sales. The first stop was an estate sale in Minden and it seemed pretty picked over by the time we arrived. I picked up some Craftsman pliers and a hose sprayer, although the neighbors found some treasures. IMG_4272.jpegThe most promising sale of the day was in Washoe City. The seller must have spent plenty of time at Harbor Freight since I spotted four identical Pittsburgh brand adjustable wrenches at various locations on the property. I did find some worthwhile tools and replenished my bungee cord supply. I’m always happy to find S-K tools and these 3/4” drive tools are going to be pretty nice after plenty of cleanup. We found a few Craftsman tools as wellIMG_4276.jpeg
IMG_4278.jpeg
The next sale in Carson City was getting ready to close (at Noon!) but we looked around and found a few pieces along with a cute little possibly homemade gold toolbox.IMG_4266.jpegIMG_4267.jpeg
One more listed sale led to some TOOs.
TOO #1IMG_4270.jpeg
TOO #2 (free) & 3 at the same location.IMG_4264.jpeg
IMG_4263.jpeg

Down the same street was TOO #4. I believe the the speeder is a prewar unmarked 1/2” drive S-K.IMG_4262.jpegAfter a gas fill up and lunch we arrived home at 4:00 and the power was back on. Quite a fun day of sales.

Is the left item an extra adjustable wrench scroll (screw, snail)? I’ve only found two loose ones, and neither fits my 15” ¿crescent or Diamond, forget which?

Rolled by a sale and took a shot asking for tools. Guy comes out of the garage with a small Rubbermaid tote and says here look through this. I saw Marco, Snap On, CMAN, Etc amongst the junk and since I was pressed for time said how much for the whole thing? He told me to make an offer which I normally don't like to do but I said how about $40. He said 50 and I quickly took out the money. I'll rifle through it later after my son's baseball game and post the hits. There's already a Snap-On tamper-proof torx set on a rail as seen in the pic. That's worth more than $50 alone.1000012202.jpg

Slow day, three planned spaced an hour apart each. (first was a 3 house "block sale" advertised as a 3 street block sale...)

4 pair new buckskin gloves, -fit perfect - a box of Crossman CO2 cartridges, pack of Crossman Pellet clips, a brass hose fitting (you can get anything but barbed anymore...) and at the second place the 1-3/4" Plvmb crows foot was free.

t-mags-Brass-hose-fitting-Y2-Plvmb-1-3-4-crow-foot.jpg

And second stop much later 3 drivers, - the Granger one is double needed, a flex Allen driver, inside calipers, and a K_D impact driver - $2 all

We went to a few local sales this morning with mixed results. Few sales had tools but we found a few items. I probably need to go back to this sale tomorrow since I wasn’t very thorough. IMG_4305.jpeg

That older looking clamp, as you put it, if for a saw vise. They often go missing. Good scores, and you made your money back on those Snap-on torx sockets.

Would you be able to elaborate a little more on the clamp? Sorry, wood working/carpentry is not my forte.

Agreed, when I saw the torx socket set I just made an offer on the whole box.
EDIT: Just checked Snap On's site...this set is $407.00 new:eek:

You can see where the part you picked up attaches to the vise, which is the long portion up top. The clamp is adjustable so it can be used on a work bench, or a saw horse, or any suitable attaching point.

Gotcha thank you. Is there a market for these/any value since they go missing? It's useless to me.

Had a good day today. Late Thursday I won two lots from an Estate Auction, pick up was today. Took the dogs for a run early, hit two waste of time sales, then packed up for the hour drive over the hill and south (Santa Clara for the locals). After picking up my stuff, it was over an hour back home after bailing off the freeway due to a stoppage. Found an estate sale on the route home, day two, so wasn’t expecting much. Straight to the garage I go, see a bunch of people clustered on one side, looking at NIB Matchbox cars and other “collectibles”. The other side had a pegboard with tools, and a craftsman carry box with two drawers. Went over, saw a few planes en route, picked up one, put a few others back. Made it to the corner, realized there was an oak drawered tool box against the main door, covered in dust and a few cheap plastic lights. Looked at the price sticker, verified it with the garage staffer, and decided it was going home with me. Took an oil can also. Checkout took all but one dollar in my wallet.

Here is the auction haul, one lot was 71# of old machine catalogs, will summarize in a list later. Saw a few which might be of use at ITCL, others are more “machine stuff”. The other lot included a Do-All bench center, a surface gauge of unknown make in a wooden box, wooden box of misc tools, including pliers, files, etc, metal box of locks, metal pouring can, and vintage electronic/ electric gadgets.

The Do-All is new to me, not sure exactly how much I can use it, but from quick reading, two projects seen possible. Not much mention of them here on GJ, I may have to go to PM for assistance. What’s interesting is the shipping Label on the box, USMC.

The box is probably a SIPCO, in pretty good shape, just missing the front flap. A few things of interest inside, include files, and a different square (see vintage toolbox thread later). The plane is a horned smoother, with a skewed blade, and a radiused edge on a Rabbet type plane (see the handplane page later). And an oil can full of red stuff, guessing ATF.

All in all a good day, cuz I also found my wife’s birthday present, and not at a gas station or 7-11.
