First impression of ICON G2 ratchets

Had to drive my son to a fencing tournament last Sunday. To kill time, I went to a Harbor Freight nearby.

The new ICON G2 ratchets are very nice! I have many Snap On ratchets. ICON G2s are probably the closest to Snap On. The 80-teeth is smooth, not sure about internal design, when rotated, sounds remarkably similar to Snap On.

Somehow I like ICON G2's flex locking. The comfort grip feels better than Snap On.

The G2's are very decent ratchets, I have several...

Two negatives, from my perspective:
  1. They currently are only available in pretty long versions.
  2. At full list price, they aren't much of a bargain. At 20%+ off, they start to become more attractive.

I picked up one of the 26" locking flex head 1/2" ratches when they had the 25% off when buying 4 icon items sale. I'm a fan so far. Doesn't get used much, but was nice to have when removing the caliper brackets from my F250.

Added bonus that is also the perfect length to wedge between the brake pedal and steering wheel to keep the pedal depressed when troubleshooting trailer brakes and lights.

Not directly related, but the HF Bremen spreader clamps are *perfect* for keeping the brake pedal depressed when needed... And at a bit of a better price point than an $80+ ratchet. The cheaper Pittsburg ones work as well, but the Bremen's are nicer.

I’ll say something that will probably offend people here but I like the Icon better than the Snap On

I only have one snap on ratchet and it’s an 80 tooth and seldom use it because of the back drag. The icon, or at least the ones I have, have less back drag then the one snap on I have.

What is the verdict on adding a bit of Super Lube grease in the G2 ratchets? For some reason there was a trend of all the YouTube tools guys doing this on the Gen 1s.

My top 5 current gripes with ICON:

1. Their screwdriver handles are uncomfortable. If they made a hard-handle grip, I’d be all over them! Also, why no T10 - T30 Torx screwdrivers, or long Phillips/slotted screwdrivers?

2. No 12 point sockets. We’re running into more and more 12 point fasteners in the heavy equipment field.

3. The only color available is red. I would like to see orange, blue, green, purple, yellow, even “blackout”, etc… If you want to compete with the tool trucks, you need to beat them at their own game.

4. How about a comprehensive master service set like the Matco 122 piece set, or the Cornwell Blue Power 288 piece set?

5. Promote. Promote. Promote. ICON t-shirts, hoodies, hats, beanies, socks…

I agree with #4 the most, I think they would sell very well but their warranty scheme of bring back the whole set versus a single piece wouldn't work.

I thought they stopped the entire set required thing... Never had to test that.

If they introduced more colors, that would be that many more sets they’d have to inventory to be able to break them up for warranty work.

The few Icon things I have bought have been OK but nothing earth shattering. I hate the fact they don’t carry loose stock sockets and wrenches, but I get why they do it.

I thought of i brought in a single they would break a set then put it on the discount track on the back

That’s the way it works here. I’ve had to warranty two different Icon Torx sockets, and both times they broke open a set and replaced the one piece. It seems to be a really inefficient way of doing things, but it must pencil out on their end.

Near me the discount version is very high in my opinion

My newest Snap-on ratchet (an S80A) is buttery smooth and super low backdrag. I did some backdrag testing on 1/2" ratchets in a recent video if you are interested...

Icon G2 was good, but not great.

Agree... Don't like Icon handles or selection of drivers at all. Wera/Wiha for me when it comes to drivers. Or even the new Capri's which are Witte.
2. No 12 point sockets. We’re running into more and more 12 point fasteners in the heavy equipment field.
Yeah, Icon has what they have, and it isn't all that much. I recently picked up a Tekton 12 pt 1/2" set, 10-38mm no skips for $80 and it is very nice... Not as nice as my snap-on 12 pts, but close, and super well priced with a great warranty.
3. The only color available is red. I would like to see orange, blue, green, purple, yellow, even “blackout”, etc… If you want to compete with the tool trucks, you need to beat them at their own game.
Meh... I'm not all that into the tool matchy-matchy game or favorite tool colors. I have a bit of everything, but I do like *complete* sets of whatever tools I have.
4. How about a comprehensive master service set like the Matco 122 piece set, or the Cornwell Blue Power 288 piece set?
They have something like that in Quinn, though yeah, an Icon version would be nice.
5. Promote. Promote. Promote. ICON t-shirts, hoodies, hats, beanies, socks…
lol... I suppose I'd wear an Icon hat before a Harbor Freight hat, but I'm good....

Some ratchets will stick like hell if you use super lube grease (what they sell at HF). Some ratchets like a lighter weight lubricant, like SuperLube ISO 100-150. Some like a blend of both...

I personally am of the opinion that you should leave your ratchets alone when new and not have to re-lube them if they are made properly... Until they get some serious use at least.

But yeah, some folks think Super Lube grease is magic.

It's funny but I was amazed at just how dissimilar the mechanisms were given my initial assumption that the Icon would be just a dead copy of the Snap-on.

The ratcheting mechanisms are nearly interchangeable, due to the fact that the heads are machined almost the same, but the internals are definitely different.

Use the oil, not the grease. I'd also say less is more too...

HF runs things pretty clearly by a specific business model and is trying to keep things pretty trim from an inventory perspective. Singles means a lot more SKU's to track/manage/ship/stock. Same thing for colors. I thought they did dip their toe into a master set, but not sure it made it as an ongoing offering.

As for the merch and beating the trucks at their own game, I think HF is not at all interested in competing directly with the trucks. They focus on core products and while they've expanded to a lot more shop-centric tools, they're clearly being pretty selective.

While many of us see it differently, I honestly don't think HF thinks they're competing head-to-head with SnapOn (but they do compete indirectly in certain categories) and SnapOn doesn't really worry about HF at all.

If Harbor Freight wanted to, they could easily run a company-owned truck of some kind based within a certain range from their brick-and-mortar stores, but that would have to move a lot of volume to be successful and really make them change a lot about how they do business. I had a few thoughts and did some napkin-math on the idea a while back, and while I'm probably only in the general ballpark it's not too hard to see why they're not doing it.

On the other hand, if SnapOn wanted to be more "retail" they'd have their online store structured differently and charge a lot less for shipping. Everything they do protects their current business model of trucks and corporate/gov sales (where most of their profit comes from). HF is a small potatoes to them, picking off the least-sticky business they have. The truck-owners feel differently I'm sure, but that's a whole different thing (and a losing battle anyway - if HF disappeared Lowes/HD/whoever would fill the space and provide similar "competition").

I thought they stopped the entire set required thing... Never had to test that.
That's never been the policy, but has been how some poorly trained or lazy employees have done it here and there.

I thought of i brought in a single they would break a set then put it on the discount track on the back
That's the way they are supposed to do it. If you ever bring a single and they say they need the whole set, ask to speak with the store manager or call their 800 customer assistance line.

I assume this ratchet has the same internals as the ones people rave about but just in an industrial finish.
IMG_1702.jpeg

For whatever reason it has noticeably more back drag than my favorite SK ratchets and the Icon G2 ratchet I have. The SKs are the small head ones when Facom was part of the company.

Maybe I’m just lucky and got a bum Snap On ratchet. It’s seldom used because of the back drag compared to my other ratchets.

If ICON wasn't aimed directly at competing with tool trucks they wouldn't have copied everything to be knock off Snap-On.

My biggest complaint is that you can't buy singles, If I loose a 10mm socket I don't need a new complete set..

You can buy singles you just have to order them.

Eta; ........ and they even offer free shipping which is a small miracle in today's world. You do have to call though which is a little odd and they also want to verify you did purchase the rest of the set.

I like how HF has upped the quality of their offerings...but it's funny how they're just as expensive as any good brand (think GW, Craftsman, etc) now. Not that they are the sole reason Sears isn't around, but a good story on how to undercut for years, then replace the same price point in the market.

Everyone acts like tools were the only thing keeping Sears afloat. They did a ton with Craftsman tools, but they had tons of "house-brands" in multiple areas. I don't see HF selling appliances, outdoor power equipment, or clothes ..

That’s just the icon stuff, they still have multiple ratchets under $10

I've messed around with the G2's in store; I kinda like them but have no current need or want for another ratchet. That being said, if I were to catch a good sale I might be inclined to buy the 20" 3/8 fixed head. Over the summer I did a job where the only thing I had that would work was my 15" 3/8 SK LP90 fixed head and I actually wished the handle was a little longer.

It was what really set them apart from typical mall anchor stores. I think it was brilliant, and obviously worked for a long time - there was stuff for the whole family to checkout (vs say a Kohl's or JC Penny). I'm aware the latter had tools at some point, but not in my lifetime in any capacity lol.

You are missing my point. Not that Sears didn't sell tools, but rather that HF didn't single-handedly bring down Sears. Craftsman was not the only part of Sears.

Thinking about Eric and His yachts; I wonder if He is known as the "Picky Pirate" in the world of Tool Design Looting. However, still have to give Him credit for a good taste and business operations.

This was a little disappointing. Just on a 10mm bolt head, not reafing on it, no cheater pipe, I've definitely leaned on it harder before. Oh well, I'll get a new one and keep using it.

Time to test out the warranty! 3/8", right?
