They had 5/16 hex drive in 20s, I think derived from stevens tools. These appeared around the time of the stevens merger in 26.

Correct. I had one of those 5/16" hex drive sets, but deliberately did not mention it because it's hex drive, and that set didn't contain what you and I would call a "spinner handle" - it's more like one of their driver handles, like the 3801 I posted on the previous page (ferrule and collet type set-up)

Recently got a Stevens Walden 1/4" drive set. Have not been able to identify a part number or approximate date. Originally thought I may refinish the box but luckily it grew on me. 20250912_111729.jpg20250912_112519.jpg

^ I didn't even realize how bad that thing smelled until I opened up that box, which has been sitting closed for well over a year now.
Couple guys here advise to store those separate from other bare steel components to prevent the other pieces from oxidizing.
That's why I sealed it up in a zip-lock.

Awesome set. And with the supply classification code...I would surely collapse at the flea market (with the box gripped tightly in hand)!

What size extension is the 3115? Is the crossbar a 3"?

The Walden 1/4” drive crossbars are 4-1/2” long with knurling on one end. They are about the same length as the sliding t handles. IMG_4364.jpegIMG_4362.jpeg

A partial FSN (WW2 Federal Stock Number) marked 1/4” drive set arrived from an eBay seller yesterday. The sockets were possibly plain steel and the flex handle looked like worn cad plating. I have a hard time leaving FSN marked boxes behind since I used to be constantly looking for them. At least this one wasn’t expensive. I found this classic string of late war/postwar sockets at the flea market this morning.

20251026_113920.jpg

Missing a few (3107, 3108, and 3110), but all the 8-pointers (3159, 3160, and 3161) are there, and all the others (3106, 3109, 3111, 3114) are 6-pointers. They were in an SW box but the handles and extensions were a mix of other brands. The conversation with the vendor, heavy Russian accent, was funny. "Nobody knows ziss brand." He had some "S and K" (as he insisted on calling it) he kept trying to sell me, but it was 60's era stuff plus a Wayne set. "Why you wants this?" He couldn't understand why I wanted just the sockets. I tried explaining, but he was perplexed, clearly thinking me nuts. :)

Walden Worcester box wrench. Marked "1436 WALDEN WORCESTER" on one side, "3/4 CHROME-ALLOY Made in USA 7/8" on other. According to Alloy Artifacts info, this is probably from the 1930 to 1940 time period based on the chrome-alloy marking.

Ahhh, the mysterious PM series. Considering the 1950s catalogs mention nothing about PM sets, and the 7Up ad being dated 1962, I'm gonna have to say the 7Up ad came first. My PM32 set has that mid 1960s look...

Besides, that father looking dude tried to get those two teens to fix that tractor for two years but they were too "hip" to get greasy man! He finally just mumbled "damn kids" and grabbed his PM21 and went out and got it running!

hello all. new to the walden worcester world, i found this at an estate sale, and it has sent me down the proverbial rabbit hole into the history of W.W. i know that this was introduced in 1925 with the mysterious #28 tool set, then offered separately about 1927.i love the thrill of finding something i haven't seen before and uncovering the story it has to tell. that being said, this particular 1113 backspin clutch adapter has me a little puzzled, of the 13 or so examples i have been able to find online, mine is different in a few ways, it has the "made in usa" in smaller print than the "walden worcester", all of the stampings are 180 degrees reversed from all of the other examples, the square broach for the female 1/2" has sharp square corners, as does the male part on the bottom, different from the softer corners found on almost all other examples, but the most interesting thing, is the sharp and clear stamping of a capital "i" above the "walden-worcester" stamping on the barrel. hoping some of you may be able to shed some light on these features.... thank you....

Might be the picture but is the male 1/2" centered on the rest of it? It looks offset. Could be someone took a allen and ground it down, not rounding the edges. The I may have been stamped later.

the male 1/2" is centered, and factory, it has a detent ball as well, that part is spring loaded and when pushed down, it engages matching grooves inside. when extended it is free spinning

Here are a couple of Walden 5501 drag link sockets someone elsewhere was asking for ID on. Not mentioned here by number, so thought I’d grab the photos for posterity.

And maybe to prevent this :

Others were trying to claim soldering iron tips, including an AI, who said that Weller 550, was what the requestor meant, not Walden 5501.🤮

Good Morning: I’m sorry but I don’t know what a drag link socket is… is it like a slot screwdriver?
Like a Giant slot screwdriver bit. Most popular use these days is loosening the screw under a vise pivot.

Supposedly a drag link was in certain vehicle front ends. Most makers don’t sell the tools anymore, so I suspect the technology changed. I think @Private Lugnutz posted something some time back, but I can’t find it at this time.

Here is Wikipedias version, far less entertaining

You may be thinking of a later version, but linked HERE is good one I provided to someone back in 2017, which was before your time. One interesting thing to add to that is that prior to the advent of detachable drag link sockets mechanics would use offset screwdrivers, and, like offset screwdrivers, "drag link sockets" were also used on steering boxes, shock absorbers, and many other hard to reach fasteners with slots in automotive applications.

I have been looking for one of these little Walden ratchets for a while. In operation it’s not all that smooth so I’ll take it apart and lube it. IMG_6217.jpegIMG_6216.jpeg
I received this cad early war set in a care package. It came in what was originally an FSN marked box which is now missing its stenciling. IMG_6060.jpegIMG_6061.jpeg
