I picked up this Gerstner chest last week at an estate sale. Not really a "you ****" price, but considering it's over 100 years old, more than fair I think. It's a model 41, made between 1919 and 1921. The key is still present and it works. I have a few Gerstners, but this is the oldest by far.
Isn't it wonderful when things are made to last a lifetime? Cherish that box, someone has taken good care of it!

Rare Thursday estate sale - in the rain...

I may go back for a left behind vise on the bench if still thrre for 1/2 off day?

Mostly ladies stuff but there were a few higher end tools/supplies like a Dayton grinder Milwaukee hole shooter, some welding rod, etc...

My $14 take was a Low flow shower head - need another for the new brass camp washstation planned - 7/8 and 3/4" rubber tips - I used these a lot, a lonely T-saw fence that with a little bit of modification should work out great for my 1935 table saw, and the 1/2 can of Acetone, which has replenished my supply to full gallon and quart cans.

Ok, it's been a while. Yard sales are over, & firewood cutting season is upon us.
But yesterday out of the blue, I got a phone call from someone I had left my phone number with at their yard sale, (two years ago) when I asked if they ever would want to sell any of the mechanics tools that might be in the 80's Snap-on box in the open garage.....
I came home with a lot of stuff, dirty, & incomplete sets, mostly Snap-on & MAC.
I'll post 1/2 of the stuff today, & try to get to the rest tomorrow.
But first just for fun, A whoozit.
Anybody recognize this thing? Reminds me of the thing a giant cuckoo bird would fly out of a clock on.

Paper sorter for racking individual copied pages. then you walk the line taking one page at a time and then staple/clip binder it. Good for 25 pages max IIR seen a couple put in a long row for more pages.

This was before copiers could copy, collate, and staple for you....

That's a small one! Only 12 pages!

Hey fellas! It's been a while since I last posted. I hope everyone is doing well!

I hit a couple of estate sales this morning. The first one close to home was overpriced for my tastes. Headed to the second one hoping the items I was interested in were still there. As luck would have it they were still there and the prices were great. IMO.

The Craftsman woodcarving set was obviously made for Sears by Miller Falls. I'm unsure if I've ever seen this vise here on GJ. Probably have and just can't recall it. I'll post on the Vises thread to get more info. I paid $20 for the vise and $20 for the two sets of woodcarving tools. At the first sale, a single tool would have cost me at least $20. It's fun when lady luck is shining on you.

The sales listed today didn’t look promising but after the rain yesterday we were happy to get out of the house. The first sale was in Richmond and it was advertised as a moving sale. We found these items. IMG_4851.jpeg
We then headed across the bridge to San Rafael. The first Marin sale was an artist’s studio that was closing. The Bosch orbital sander was a good find. IMG_4846.jpeg
Next was the second day of a garage sale that had been pretty picked over. My wife’s picks were interesting

IMG_4850.jpeg

From there it was back across the bridge for the last 10 minutes of the second day of an estate sale in Concord. The Stanley square was aluminum. The pliers were Channellocks.IMG_4847.jpeg
I had no expectations whatsoever for the last sale, a family run estate sale. Boy was I surprised. IMG_4853.jpeg
My favorite find of the day was the Barcalo looking Crescent combo set in the roll just missing the 1” wrench. Very lightly used IMG_4862.jpeg
The complete Craftsman metric combo set was a surprise as well. They need some cleanup.IMG_4871.jpeg
Blue Point extractor set.IMG_4857.jpeg
A few other items. IMG_4856.jpeg
A unique grabber. Good for road rage. You may have to use your imagination. IMG_4863.jpeg

I barely got a look at them and it was getting dark by the time I finished taking pictures. There were four bits in each package, may have been Torx? Yeah, BK. Very Barcalo like!

That is a sewer pipe support for RV parking. Keeps the flexible pipe in a full draining condition.

After yesterdays two sales near me having nothing of interest or need, today, to get out of the house, I went a little farther afield, although not much. And I did find a sale that was up my alley, so to speak. An old home in the country, built by the owner, with a decent shop.
54925066882_22c74f32e7_b.jpg
3 Gunline checkering handles, 3 Gunline checkering tools, 2 chisel handles, corner chisel, Vlcheck DBE, 3 Gunline barrel channel tools.

The were taking bids on some larger items, such as this:
54924816167_8b4f7bf4b2_b.jpg
a 30' tall trebuchet, similar to the one used on the TV show Northern Exposure.

I had a couple so-so sales to hit after that, but on my way I spied a TOO, a Shop Sale sign on the side of the road. So, why not hit it? Well, I might have found a new honey hole.
54926138643_5acb295a89_b.jpg
A Stanley No. 2, type 3 I think, and two Stanley sweet harts: No's 93 and 94. Seems they were selling off grandpa's tools, and guns, from a long time firearms training small business, and grandpa was also a woodworking and tool collector. I will keep my eyes open for the sign, as they do not advertise, just when they feel they have the time to sit around and wait for people.

Sort of a slow day with all the rain earlier this week. partly cloudy and the HS flea was canceled as they were forecast for rain down there.

2 estate sales; a dud TOO and one "Moving sale" that just didn't bother to open (or post the actual address, but none of the houses on either side of where it was supposed to be had anything going).

First ES $2 total outlay. A jar of copper/brass bolts, and a tire patch wheel in need of a handle.

1763243184216.png

Which it got as soon as that pic was taken:

1763243227826.png

And a Sheldon Turret vise, (apparently made by Wilton...) 7" wood vise jaws, 3" machine side and 6" opening; needs a shim as the backlash is a couple of turns.

Also needs the mess of white paint removed. I'll give SG a shot and hope to save the original Wilton green, as that paint is NLA in cans.

Gave $20 on half off day at the ES I hit on Thursday.

3 Gunline barrel channel tools.
I've got two of these now, one marked from a little shop north of LA. Is Gunline the normal maker, and the shop just added their mark? Trying to determine how to actually use this thing correctly.

Thanks

The ones I've used are for free-floating a barrel or putting a larger dia barrel in a stock. You already have a barrel plow to use as a guide and you're just making it a little larger.

That was my thought process, but not for guns. I figured I could use it as a scraper for either plowed or chiseled grooves, in either clean up mode, or enlarging mode. Woodworking general rather than gunsmithing specific.

Thanks

Ideally, you'd have several as one just slightly larger than the groove you're enlarging is most likely to "track" easily. Start small and work your way up. YMMV.

They're sure as hell a lot faster than using a dowel wrapped in sandpaper to do the same job.

Estate sale ($2): Moody Master Kit precision small tool kits: MMK-3A, MMK-3B (nib).

Initially thought they were two new boxes of tube fuses. Didn't realize Moody's is still is business and make some reasonable gear.

As alluded to yesterday, I was busy yesterday contributing to others garage sale finds/purchases. Peddling wares and selling memories and links to the past. Lots of folks came through my booth and I had a good day dollar wise. Didn't sell as much as I had hoped but as alluded to , I'm liquidating about 90% of my Plomb collection. Totally a choice I made on my own as I have decided to narrow my focus on collecting and put some funds back in my pockets :).

But of course, I can't be in the vicinity of a swap meet without buying some cool old stuff...

-My wife found these cool "gurley" branded candles...made by socony vacuum as a way to dispose of waste paraffin. Very fitting of the upcoming holiday. I have a collection of this brand based on its automotive tie but dont have any thanksgiving themed candles. $10
IMG_4883.jpeg

Also picked up this cool Veedol oil can as a new trash can for my garage. Bottom as a few pin holes I will need to fix but it has the "look" so it got picked up for $40
IMG_4884.jpeg
IMG_4885.jpeg

-picked up a mixture of original 50's hot rod "little book" magazines and some modern magazines for reading
- Also scored this new old stock Dodge "WC" (weapons carrier) military truck rearview mirror. No I dont have one of these trucks but my son and I like vintage military trucks and this one was too cool to pass up. Date on the box says packaged in 1951
- lastly this minty fresh mobil oil can. Paid $30 but it's absolutely as mint as it gets. I've got more than a few rough mobil cans so this one is special. It's on my shelf in my room now.
- vintage Mopar manifold gasket parts envelope. the parts are still in it but the artwork is so cool.
-Also scored a Sears/Craftsman Post war set that was offered with a Plomb ratchet and new Britain hinge handle and sockets. **bonus that it has the pin handle**. the set has nice paint on the inside but the outside has seen some use but not abuse. The set is dirty and has that amazing smell of oil and grease and age so I'm leaving it just like it is. I have been opening the lid and inhaling and just enjoying the scent of the good stuff we all chase.

Visited an estate sale on its third and last day today. It would probably have qualified as a hoarder sale that included huge amounts of unusual collections such as cookie cutters, boxes of the grabbers used to grip canning jars from boiling water and the old style hand crank meat grinders that you would clamp to a counter top. My expectations were low but $2.00 bought a nice Diamond 10" slip joint plier, a Thomas & Betts wire cutter/crimper, Williams chain wrench and a battery terminal cleaner.

Had to give a friend a ride out to beautiful downtown Puyallup, and there was a "Habitat for Humanity" store in the same parking lot!
So while she and the guy selling her the car hammered out a deal, I picked through several bins of what was mostly junk and brought these home.
Couldn't leave it behind, ya know.

So... do you suppose it was Barcalo supplying Western Auto with the "scoop" combo, or Crescent?

My wife and I just got back from Vegas last week. A good friend of ours died a little over a year ago. His wife is ready to downsize and move on. My wife and I went to Las Vegas to help her sort through the years of stuff that has been collected. I was in charge of sorting through the tools and treasures in the garages (2) and to do some minor repairs around the house, leaky faucets, toilets, rehang a gate and to check out their RV. They (mother and daughter) also wanted some tool kits for them for general household type repairs. I was told to take whatever I wanted. I don’t really need anymore tools but I didn’t want to leave the classic american tools. There was a lot of newer Harbor Freight stuff. I divided up some Craftsman, Proto and some Kobalt tools for the ladies tool kits. This is what I saved:

Plomb 215 brake spring pliers. (My first Plomb!)
Utica No.1932 fence pliers
Diamond K38 slip joint pliers
1763450514391.jpeg

Walden 3150 ¼ drive ratchet, (My first Walden)
POWR-KRAFT ¼ drive spinner w/female drive in handle
Thorsen ¼ drive breaker bar
Craftsman 6” ¼ drive extension
Mac 6” ⅜ drive extension

1763450514442.jpeg

POWR-KRAFT DBE
S-K DOE
Craftsman ignition wrenches
Proto 10” adjustable wrench
1763450514498.jpeg

Mac TR1 thread file. This will join my TR2 file that I bought new in the eighties.
