Found some walnut for my bench seat. It was pretty rough stuff, made a deal for all of it (better price) knowing I was gonna burn through most of it to get what I wanted. When searching for ideas..I came across a work bench, the top was purple heart, length wise, 1 piece full table length. I wanted the same for my bench, full length, 1 piece. So here's 27 50.5+ x1.75x.75 strips of walnut for the seat portion of my bench. I clamped them to keep them from going crazy before I glue them up tomorrow. I'll split it up into two glue ups, my planer only does 15". The goal is 1.5" thickness, so I cut them to 1.75 knowing I'll lose some after another pass or two through the planer.

Lots of lumber dressing to get to that stack.

I have lots of random walnut scraps that will turn into something else at some point..

Added a picture of the Purple Heart work bench that got me here.
That wood will look nice for your bench.

More yard cleanup. Trimmed back an overgrown bush. Last mowing of the year, need to clean up the mower, change the oil, and see how the graphite coating under the deck held up. Got the fertilizer down for winter.

Investigating why my truck brakes have started making a grindy noise. Sounded like it was in the back, but the drums and shoes looked ok. Ran it on jackstands (not my favorite thing to do) and wedged the brake pedal with a stick. Found the right front was the source. Inner pad worn down, letting the edge of the metal plate rub on the rusty edge of the rotor. New pads and rotors procured.

Need to do a bunch of cleaning and putting away of yard tools tomorrow before the warm weather breaks and it gets cold and rainy.

I have been procrastinating on starting an upcoming big project that I know will take up a huge amount of space, time, and money. So in order to create more room and to quit tripping over all these other microprojects, I started with the biggest obstruction:

This 18yo 1k mile Foreman that wouldn’t start three years ago:

We bought this pair of Hondas new but have neglected them lately while putting a roof back over our heads. I suspect the float is stuck, but have been reluctant to crouch down for hours dinking with it. The plan was to lift it up to measure for a bracket that will replace one of the hoist arms and grab the bike frame, but now that it’s hoisted with every extension, it’s high enough to reach and see everything without the crouch, so that’s one less thing to fabricate. Years past we never encountered bad gas due to the way we distill it up here, but after two different tanks of saw gas going bad this year, maybe that’s the problem? Then I have to try and remember how to reassemble it.

Do you have non-ethanol hi-test available to you? Like 91 or 93 octane. It's what I run all my small engines, bike, boat, Dingo, saws, etc, on. It makes a world of difference, and no more water eating away at the fuel systems. I can also run on last season's or even year's fuel with minimum degradation in performance.

Warmed up outside so took the time to replace the stuck carb on the beetle. When bolting on the fresh rebuild discovered the rear most stud was stripped. Fortunately a long bolt in from the bottom worked. It will get a helicoil next time out. Installed, connected a gas IV and she fired right up. Let it run for a couple minutes then reset the accelerator pedal linkage and shes running. So it's a win for me!! Stuck carb in pictures.

We don’t have ANY ethanol up here, which is what threw me. Apparently a barge or two of Outside gasoline each month makes it up here, so maybe that was the source. We have never needed Sta-bil in the past, but perhaps that is no longer true.

Bahn mi and Sheppard's Pie. I didn't realize that was Sheppard's Pie, or I wold have gotten a fork to pull a piece out to show that it isn't just a bowl of mashed potatos.

Sill need to hone my lighting some. I think I'm over-using soft lighting and need some more direct lighting. Waiting for some accessories to aid in that.

This is something I shot back in '08, and I prefer the more dramatic lighting:

I think I was using several Speedlites, mostly undiffused. I just wish I'd kept some kind of notes back then....
I'd eat that.

Came home yesterday from an early in and out to the big city and said I sure want to bump back up to way brighter headlights like I had before and was getting flashed a lot. Now my attitude is new cars have stupidly bright headlights than they did 5 years ago I am going back to super bright LEDs.

I know I got Sylvania Silverstars in there now and LEDs in the fog lights…..time to move the 6500s back up into the headlights and get 10000s for the fog lights.

while looking for the now long gone 4500s I made a dirt bike helmet shelf up over the man door to clear room off the benches. Today while fidgeting I will move the lanterns that I been given from my deceased father and the wife’s stepfather0A78FC64-2FE5-492F-BF8A-8E2F499EC9BD.jpeg

plan to move the broom rack up for more room down low.

I've noticed that not only do the newer vehicles have nuclear headlights, but many people don't dim their lights. I drove home today with my high beams on the whole way, and didn't get flashed once. Guess it's time to upgrade the lighting on the Tool Box Truck, and join the blinding brigade.

Yeah, it's turning into a lighting arms race these days. Not only are the headlights brighter and often used by idjits, but most of the vehicles out this way are huge pick-ups with the headlights four feet off the ground.

Driving home the other night an oncoming rig had his highs on. My LED driving lights are on my high beam circuit, so I flashed him. Nothing. I turned the highs on. Nothing. Lit up the LED light bar--he just kept on cruisin' by.

I've gotta get one'a them Javelin missiles to mount on the rig.

I still have the "driving light" I converted to a hand held searchlight. This type was also used as aircraft landing lights "back in the day" it turns hillsides into daylight.

Been tempted to get it loaded up...

Replaced a recently installed door window blind with a new one (I dropped the first one and broke few ends off the slats) and installed a matching blind on the small window. Now I can block the sun from coming thru the door and small window when needed.

Also packed up the trailer with another load of tools and equipment for donation to the NJ Fire Museum and delivered it. Starting to see some room now in the garage and shed. If the weather holds up for next Saturday, I'll make one more delivery.1763299230136.jpeg1763299197965.jpeg

Another fifteen-minute job... done in under two hours!

I need to pull the wheels off my old Van to get new snow tires mounted next week. Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to my old 14" steel rims when I bought the 15" aluminum rims. Even the spare is missing! That ain't right....

Next problem. We have three 5AH batteries for our drivers and impact. My coworker put all the tools away with dead batts. Start charging.

I get to the cabin, loaded up with tools, just after noon. First thing is to help the landlord figure out the Byzantine plumbing of the pump house. Get that done.

I've brought a piece of 1" ply that's just big enough to allow the floor jack to roll forward enough to get the rig jacked up. Unload plywood, jack and jack stands. I had a friend drop off four pallets yesterday so I can chock the old Van up on those--two at each end will get the rig ten inches off the ground, and be much more stable than cinder blocks or cribbing. Put on my back brace and slide the ply under the rear corner of the rig. Hoist the jack out of the Toy trunk and roll it onto the ply. Start jacking. The jack raises until it hits the jack point, then... nothing. Pump away, nothing.

Load jack back into the rig and roll back to the shop. Add some hydraulic fluid, purge the pump, test. Working now. Load it back into the rig and roll back to the cabin.

Fifteen minutes later,

(Should be pictures here)

There's something so forlorn about an old friend without wheels.

(and here)

I actually got all those in the Toy in one load!

I'd been intending to fix ol' Blue up and get 'er back on the road. She needs about fifteen K$ of work. I seem to have found a slightly newer Vanagon that has almost everything I was hoping to do done for twelve K, so that's that.

I'll probably part out ol' Blue as I can't imagine getting much of anything for her. I can pull the trans and send it off for a full rebuild, as that's a serious weak point on a Vanagon--especially one with seventy-five more ponies under the deck than it was designed for. I'll have to price out getting a stronger diff, and also see about a limited-slip--they do make 'em for the Van.

Now where the hell are those old wheels? No way I tossed the SPARE. I can't imagine someone stealing 14" steel Vanagon rims with bald tires....

Wait: Suddenly, I remember selling the rims and tires to some freaks in a Vanagon with really bald tires three or four years ago so they could make it home... so that's what happened to them! But the spare... and didn't I have two sets of rims?

Beer thirty....

Glued up half and set the second half on the bench frame for a preview. Second half will get glued later this evening.

Started a T handle hex storage project, I'll post it once I get further along. I hate the metal rack they came with, anything has to be better.

Oil change & tire rotation on my '14 Outback. It takes me longer but it's still significantly cheaper to do it myself. I milked that job all afternoon. Shop heater and radio made for some pleasant garage time without interruptions. I may find some other projects to piddle with tomorrow.

Timm, try "Copy/Paste" from the source. That has been my "back door" while they work on the image stuff - again...
I do just that, between the bracketed img and /img. It's always worked for me here and elsewhere.

I also can't post a new thread right now. I tried to post one to the Questions section and I get a "You must wait ** seconds before posting". That time increases each time I try, even after waiting the designated time.

By Copy/Paste - in this case I mean right click on the image "copy image" or "<Ctrl> C" and then just hit paste in the posting window.

My oldest has gotten into 3D printing and wanted some display space. So he printed 16 pieces of 'pegboard'. Each is about 9.5 inches square and he printed 16 of them. I took a 1X4 and ripped it down to 5/8 wide strips and we made four columns. With the 5/8 width the first and last slot isn't blocked. We then attached a spacer across the bottom and a cleat on the top. Put a cleat on the wall and hung them. Since each column has it's own cleat he can move them side to side - currently there is space between them. We made the wall hang cleat large enough to add another column if he decides to later. It was a lot of fussy work but turned out well.
I had a picture of the columns but they won't upload. I'll try again later.
That's weird - I just did a copy/paste and it loaded.

Started the brakes. Got the calipers off. Passenger side looks like it shed the pad, other three still have 1/4” of pad showing. Found the piston on the driver side cracked, so bought two calipers and a bottle of fluid.

Noticed that now there is a coolent leak. Started tracking that down. Couldn’t get the pressure tester from AutoZone today, somebody else has it, so that’ll have to wait.

Washed the crud and ginkgo fruit juice off of the tools.
