I recently picked up this Gerstner tool box on Craigslist. I have searched all over the internet and even sent an e-mail to the company to find out more about it. I have came up empty. I have yet to find one with the same drawer configuration. It stands 20" high. Anyone seen one like this.

Are you certain thats a Gerstner?
X2 - photos with close-ups of the latches, pulls and the Gerstner logo would help us as well as when you go to the real source, Gerstner themselves. They have complete records and an excellent customer service department.

The lock says Gerstner and everything else points to it being a Gerstner. Like the way the drawers are made and everything else I can tell.

I've seen that model before. I'll have to check when I get home in my Gerstner info. Gerstner has made/makes a wide selection of speciality boxes. That may have been a pattern makers box or something, but I do recall seeing that drawer arrangement before. Someday I throw up the pictures of my 11 Gerstners including my cherry breifcase.

Will do, I was the forunate recipient of some great timing and good friends. McMaster Carr carried Gerstner and I worked with another Tech who's wife worked at McMaster Carr. At McMaster employees get huge, almost 50% discount on stuff. So I bought about $2K worth of Starrett and one Gerstner thru her and about a month later he came to work with a list of Gerstners that were sitting in the discontinued area that they were blowing out at 50% off to the employees. This meant the employee's could buy them for 50% off of their normal employee pricing. So I looked at the list and bought everything they had. Years later the guys I worked with at a large tool & die shop bought the cherry briefcase for me and I bought a limited edition desktop box.

There are no full width drawers. I wonder if this was a make up case? Very interesting design, is the front cover plan or raided panel?

Steve

That is the one bad thing. The guy did not have the front panel. But, for as cheap as I got it I couldn't resist.

That box looks like a box that would have been carried by a sewing machine tech in a sewing factory back years and years ago. My grandfather worked in a sewing plant as a sewing machine mechanic. He carried one very similar in drawer design. I have a photo of him at work and the tool box. I'm not sure of the brand of box it was but I remember laughing at it what I was a kid. "Look Grandpas box is built from wood" I'm not laughing now.

I would caution anybody that is looking to buy an original Gerstner box that they are the most commonly faked box in existance. I personally would guess that about half of the "Gerstners" I see at auction are fakes, regardless of having genuine badges or hardware put on them. Not sure I believe this one is real.

watch the video.

I have always had a fondness for Gerstners, especially now that cherry has become the wood of choice. Groove, thanks for the post.

What I always find interesting in factory production is the ways off-the-shelf tools are converted into special purpose. Near the end of this video when a worker is attaching brass hardware, notice how the tip of his screwdriver blade has been parallel ground and trimmed to better fit the bottom of the screw slot similar to a high-quality gunsmith tool, but maintaining the larger handle for more powerful, yet precise torquing.
