Just for a goof, I googled, and Dorman does at least make a Subaru kit:

Dorman 030-739 Universal Body Retainer Kit, 94 Piece, Compatible with Subaru

Thanks, that also helps. I was not aware of such a Subaru specific kit.

Ha thats me when I log onto this forum!

My body shop is in Addison so we are up there weekly. What a great sector from there east into Elk Grove Village and Franklin/Schiller Park etc. You can get anything made there tomorrow if you really need it!

Love that water tower in Elk Grove says “Makers Wanted”.

Funny you mention that things fly off the Snap On truck. My driver is the same he's the busiest he has ever been (32 years on the same route) But I read here in different threads that Snap On is done etc that tool trucks are a dying breed and they are going out of business…. We see the opposite. Maybe thats just our location?
I dunno. The only drivers struggling are the Matco guys and it sounds more like a distribution (goods and drivers) problem than anything else according to the new guy I use. He has a map of all the available routes hung on his truck and it’s like half of northern Illinois is open. Snappy though is always killing it. My driver has been on his route for 20+ years.

Why those are just standard VW tools! Er, for gentlemen and VW's of a certain vintage. (cough)

I've been using a dedicated 17mm hex tool since the 80's.... it's cheap, nasty, not at all fine quality and... I got it from J.C. Whitney! But it works.
The 17 hex, yeah, but I don't recall having to buy a special socket for CV joints/boots in the past... and I'd still have it if I did. Seems like we were constantly replacing boots back in the day.

Your JC W tool sounds a lot like my two-nuts-welded-together. Works, but....

Back in the 70's they were 6-pt Allen cap screws. By the time I came along, 12-point XZN, which are clearly zuperior! (If you don't just jam the bit into a hole full of road dirt and grease.)

I bought a Hazet 2567 wrench, it has an 21mm box on one end and the other end is a 17mm hex. But I think I used the 17mm hex socket from Snap-on more.

At my local junk/antique/tool place I found a pair of 10" Knipex Cobra pliers made for Sears Craftsman for $17.99 !!! New old stock apparently this is from around 2013 from what I found out. I think I got a good bargain.

Tekton SAE and metric hex bit sockets and metric deep impact sockets plus a 9” extension. All 1/4” drive.

Lang 3 wire test leads from JB Tools.

Gotta give Tekton’s shipping credit. I ordered the sockets yesterday around 2pm and they were on my porch when I got home this afternoon. Granted they are in Michigan and I am in Illinois but still, I’m impressed.

I'm amazed Tekton runs 1/4 drive impact sockets out to 17mm.

I was too.

I bought these for my project car tool cart. It is all SAE but on occasion I need something metric at that end of the shop and it's a PIA walking to the other end of the shop to my bigger boxes.

I plan to started keeping 8, 10 & 13 mm wrenches and shallow and deep 1/4 drive metric sockets in the cart just to save me some steps when the occasion arises.

There's a set of never used reamers, and in the large wood box an unused set of "adjustable reamers" still wrapped in plastic. Adjustable? Anyone ever use an adjustable reamer?

20251215_131618_resized.jpg

I use adjustable reamers a good deal.

They’re good for cleaning out anything tubular after holes or slots have been machined or punched, and they are great for trueing up tube after welding. (So often tube is a standard OD, and a standard wall thickness, giving non standard ID).

They are essential if you need to adjust the fit of anything into a hole, as you can increase the reamed size in tiny increments.

Well worth having, but can be costly. Although not in this case it seems!

Even the Chinese ones are useable.

8-10-13mm it must be a ur-a pee-n car. Those were I think the most used sizes on my VW Beetle.

Not that I have a problem with offering more sizes in 1/4", I just can't think of the use of a 1/4 17. My gen4 or whatever the latest M12 impact driver can't break loose a 15 that's much more than hand tight, even on new, not yet crusty stuff.
I would like the availability of larger 1/4” drive sockets if I was still working.
I liked being able to run in and snug up bell housing bolts with a 1/4” fine tooth ratchet.

25 years ago my SnapOn 1/4” ratchet body with a 3/8” drive anvil was a very course tooth drive and not as convenient as a 1/4” drive tool these transmission jobs

Something else this city was famous for. Got these from a junk shop for £5 five English pounds, great condition with sharp clean edges.
As was custom around here, a set of Sheffield cutlery in a presentation case was often given to retiring employees probably supervisors and above. I would imagine these are from such a set.

Wright satin wrenches 7mm to 24mm
Nice! These are my favorite wrenches.

I recently needed to add a few larger sizes to my collection. Wanted to get the Wrights but Zoro was out of stock on one and had an extended shipping time on the other, so I ended up ordering the satin Proto ASDs instead. The Wright satin is so much nicer than Proto's.

Wow, that’s a nice gift. I love those vintage Matco boxes. Most were made at the plant in my hometown in Lakewood, NY. Love it!!

BTW, ToolBoxTour recently visited the Matco toolbox plant and made an excellent video of the design and manufacturing process.

I doubt a 1/4" anvil can take the stress of breaking off a 17 mm fastener if larger torque was applied and/or it became oxidized on.

Thanks to the strap wrench fever around here lately, I got this Gear Wrench strap wrench. Amazon is showing the same thing with different colored webbing under other, unknown-to-me brands, no notable price difference.

Made in USA!

They say it's good for filters up to 9" dia., so do a little pi, this strap is over 27" long. So it would make a good melee weapon, too, if gang rumbles ever come back in style. The metal part is quite hefty.

$23.79 before tax on Amazon.

Feels pretty sturdy but looking at Amazon reviews last night, some people have managed to break them. Stitching, mostly.

Outsiders look at that and say,"That's a lot of pliers!"

GJ enablers say, "But you don't have these!"IMG_6448.jpeg

(That's Amazon, if you want to ****** that used pair.)

(I don't have these pliers. I can live without them. For now.)

Ha ha! Yes! Skyman doesn't have these!

IMG_6608.jpg

I waited a few days and nobody here had snapped up that Amazon warehouse deal, so I got them at $35.05 before tax. Otherwise $43ish, which would have deterred me.

It takes a keen, practiced eye to appreciate the artistry of this weld:

IMG_6618.jpg

But wait, there's more!
IMG_6620.jpg

Not too surprised. Once, because I generally love Knipex and it was only $23, I ordered a pair of their version of 10" Vise Grips, and I was underwhelmed at the lack of heft, and the feel of the action. Those, and this new pair, the adjuster screw felt like a bucket of rocks. Greasing it solved that. The action improved greatly with some 3-in-1 oil on each pivot rivet. But I'd never thought of doing that before with past Vise Grips, Nebraskan Petersen or Malco or Chinese Irwin. I'm not sure Knipex knows how this game is played, but these little bent pliers won't be seeing extreme use and I'm not too worried about them. Just kind of a surprise after my years with Cobras and Pliers Wrenches.

After enjoying the new Viking wheel cleaning brush I got at Advance Auto, I looked into what other brushes they made. Ordered a lug nut brush, same soft bristles as the large wheel cleaning brush, and two detailing brushes, with even softer, ultra-soft bristles.

IMG_6621.jpg

Here at GJ, we all know that you can't have enough pliers, hammers, ratchets, pry bars, sockets, chisels, punches, or brushes.

Lug nut brush, $7.49 before tax.

Detail brushes, $9.99/pr before tax.

China.

I've just received this nice little Proto 3/8 drive Torx set. Contains T10, 15, 20, 25, 27 7 30 bits. The bit retention in the holder is super tight and requires a bit to be drifted out with a punch.

I didn't need more Torx bits but at £5.49 inc. postage, I couldn't resist. ;)
