Thant's great mileage! Just curious, do you know the last time the engine had a tune-up?

Previous owner but one who sold to me was a lady who just bought a much newer one to replace this one, was fastidious about looking after it.

It feels tight.

I will have front wheel alignment etc reset.

Back home.

This car is waaay better, beyond what those people who hate on it would like you to believe. I am now convinced half the haters never even sat in one.

An absolutely great ride out on motorway in in town.

Calculator says about fuel consumption

216 miles and 29.6 liters

UK Gallons - 33 MPG

US Gallons - 27.5 MPG

Metric

11.7 km/l

8.5 l/100km

****** HELL !!!!

Love these photoshopped pics.
Definitely the three spokes for my head.

I really feel quite strongly that despite it being -1’C or 30’F outside, tomorrow I will get the Olds washed of all the road grime.

Then, because it truly fits the ethos……

I will bestow upon it, a sign, to make it stand out amongst the sheep.

Happy New Year Rian, looking forward to whatever you've got planned for this one

Thank you.

I think I have dreams, much bigger than the actual value of this car.

I would love to know what the actual cash in my grubby paws, selling price would be after I put lipstick on this piggy.

It would guide my spending.

I took apart one of the wheels just to understand how the wheel nuts and hubcaps interact.

You will see the hubcap actually has plastic domed nuts holding it down. Threaded around the wheel nuts.
Also, the protrusion in the centre under it all.

I have realised that I am going to need 5x115 to 5x114.3 adapters that would also act as spacers.

I certainly still want to go with the three spoke wheels.

I would think it’s highly unlikely that someone in the UK would have a set of 4 adapters to get me to 5x114.3

My crazy non engineering head has also asked me the question whether one could widen the hub facing bores on a set of 5x114.3 spacers to fit the 5x115 hubs and then delivering the desired PCD of 5x114.3 to take those Mk1 Freelander wheels.

Feedback, input, advice and donations accepted.

Those spoke wheels look an awful lot like Pontiac mags, wonder if you would find a set over there?

Time to start spending money.

Of course the Oldsmobile has behaved impeccably till 1st January 2026

At least it had got me home 260 miles at 33mpg on old years eve.

Seller had told me is sometimes would struggle to start, clicking a couple of times before it fired up

I was not bothered by this

Also, car came with an old used starter in a new box one assumes it was replaced before I have not looked under the car

So when I couldn’t start it on Thursday, I got the multimeter out…. 11.3 volts. Jumpers got it going instantly. Problem temporarily solved

This morning, -2’C and now about 3’c bonnet still frosted over…… the reading is 11.84 volts.

AND………..

It is a Lion battery.
We discussed them before.
So would the agreement be that one needs a replacement for the car?

While we’re spending money…..

Front tyres

They look a bit (very)iffy on the edges.
So I will see about finding and fitting a pair of part worns because I will be changing the wheels outright to alloys.
Obviously alignment etc needs setting too.
We’ll get that done.

Still not washed the car.

Because COLD.

Not Alaska cold, Not Scotland cold, just Kent cold.

Soon.

This chart shows your battery is at about 10% or so capacity for a lithium unit, likely needs replacing as you suspect.

You might want to check to be sure the alternator is actually charging the battery after you install it. You should see around 13.6 to 14.7 volts at the battery when the engine is running with no lights or other accessories on.

I will actually test that before fitting the new battery.

An oversight on my part

So my shopping trip included the following.

Though I must say, I need to go check some basics tomorrow, before I even think of mounting the battery.

Does the alternator push through current?

But,? Did buy an upgraded spec battery for £111.00 or $150.00

Better Ah and CCA

Another job to do is to make that royal cockup on the battery cables where some ******* changed them from side mount to top mount using electrical tape and snot or prayer not impressed. This would have been done by a shop for an unsuspecting customer I suspect

After the battery buying I headed to a tyre/tire shop to ask about buying and fitting some part worn tyres.

First and second shops just flat refused.
But the second shop guy, after I kept chatting and explaining that I needed a shorter term solution, referred me to a guy up on the hill who runs a small garage and tyre shop from a single car lift premises.
He advertises 14” part worns for £25.00 or $34.00 fitted, 15” for £30.00 or $40.00 fitted. Etc.
So I showed him my tyres. 205/70R15 which he had none of. He said it’s not a common size. Sales talk??
After some rummaging around he returned and offered me a pair of new, unused Continental Eco Sports for £40.00 or $54.00 each, fitted, balanced and disposing of the old tyres.

I agreed and he took my car straight in.
Less than 30 minutes later I was on my way.

Car certainly feels more planted on the road.

When I got home I checked online for tyre prices. See screenshot. I think we did OK today.

While I could have carried on with those tyres, I would rip your head off if you killed my cat, dog, kid due to racing slicks being fitted.

I decided to remove the ugly plastic wheel trims while I was on a roll

No, it doesn’t look any better bt I prefer the shonky Hoopty look that goes with dead and missing paint.

Tomorrow, weather permitting I will check out electricals

Temperature was at -4’C last night.

Chilly day, so I planned on spending some time with the YouTube school of custom painting, INDOORS.

11.30 my young neighbour Lucas calls me in a panic. The silencer on his Iveco truck had broken off just after the catalytic converter. Can I please help, he needs the truck for work.

So I told him I was not for hire (he offered me £200to repair it) but I would take a look and help him, like I did with John and his daughters car recently.

So I turned the telly off, moved my car over the street and fetched some ramps for him to drive up onto.

Perfectly timed.

Truck up the ramp, took a look and realised that the silencer would have to come off.

He left to go buy baby food etc and I carried on. Removed the silencer and inspected it.

****** !!!!

Broken off high tensile bolts tucked behind the folds of the flange.

Garage job then……..

My garage that is.

Tried to get to these welds with two different angle grinders to cut back the welds on the bolt heads. Lack of space to get in. Fail.

So cutting fluid, 9mm TiN drill bit, bit completely rounded and farked by 2mm depth .

Head scratching…….

Compressor on, die grinder, tungsten carbide cutter and a lot of patience, prayer and blind grinding.
Eventually unseated the three welded heads.

Found some mild steel nuts, bolts, spring washers and reassembled it all.

During the time of fighting this thing, we realised again that manufacturers don’t want to see you repair things. Buy a complete silencer to replace it.

Fortunately, idiots like me exist who will crawl around in the cold for four hours to save a bunch of money.

Lucas was pretty pleased.

Result.

Noice work 👍🏻

Thank you

:+1:

As usual, Rian’s karma point pot is so overfilled that is spilling over!

I had a comment on another forum about “being lucky” when I had two new Continental tyres fitted for under half price on the Oldsmobile.
I need to go back and highlight to him how karma really works.
There are no invoices, receipts or lists of debt in Karmas world.

Rian, you are a helluva guy! I know from your past adventures that this will pay forward to you sometime in the future.

Life is good!

Often times I don’t have a clue about things and will ask for help.

Lucas is a scaffolder. A hard, unrelenting job in my opinion. He is also a prepper and is very much tooled up for that.
However, he doesn’t have a garage full of bought and scavenged junk tools. And lacks somewhat in common sense to figure things like that out. So figuring out how to reengineer a truck part that is designed and engineered for replacement only……. By welding those three high tensile bolts into the flange in an inaccessible place, that was way out of his skill set.

Looking at it all in the clear light of day, with heating on, it seems that just the basic parts, ordered cheaply off eBay etc would have been £336.00 plus delivery at the mercy of couriers
A garage would just buy all the parts new.
Add to that whatever a mechanic, garage or dealership would charge for labour because they would not spend 4 hours reengineering this lot.

So I know it sounds a bit weird, but I do feel “honoured” that he felt that he could trust me.

Life is good ehhh ??

I don’t know where I am going to end up with the paint.

But two things:

1.) Cheap/Affordable

2.) Pretty/Bright/Noticeable

I was asked about, and advised a bit about paint elsewhere.

I will be learning as much as possible from it using YouTube and any input here.

Knowing that the whole lowrider thing is not big in the UK, I am risking somewhat, but I am building/painting/making it for myself. Spending too much on it, out the gates but if someone wants it at any point I would sell it on at cost, because that’s how it works here.

PS. Lace is a must, as is never ending lines.

Well, on my roof at least.

Super shite edit on a pic below.

Original included for any real photoshop wizards out there.
