Foremost, I am happy to hear that you are on the mend.

Despite the infection and incessant rain, you seem to have been out and about! @pauly should be very happy with great free steel haul.

As for putting the Astro on SORN, that is indeed a good plan, why waste £100.00 paying unnecessary tax.

I hope that you get ride if that chest infection completely very soon.

Finally, thank you for posting again. I am sure all of your friends here just like me were getting worried about you.

Thank you.

Chest infections are a pita.

Inconvenient.

PaulY paid £55.00 for the steel. But he lives 35-40 miles from me, and the steel was another 35 miles further.

So we all help each other out

He will collect or I will deliver some time that is convenient for both of us.

Part of the “inner circle “ mentality

Hi Rian, if you are actually intending to tackle painting the Olds panel by panel, how about something along the lines of the iconic VW Golf and Polo Harlequin?

Just some pics.

I believe I have posted them before.

Not sure if I will make it clear.

But these are just ideas.

Imagine a bit from all of them.

Or not.

Rian, glad you are out and moving, being ill *****.
While there we tried out some small LED indicator lights that I could use on the Oldsmobile. Ultimately, it didn’t work and I am still looking for alternatives.

While working on the baja I found a couple of leds I like some available in various colors. For the side markers I used the round and for rear turn signals I thought of using the rectangular shape. Both are quite bright. The strobe have the very annoying multi-function and can be wired to be as annoying as wanted. I particularly despise the multiflash, then blink.

I happened to be in the L.A. area when the Peterson Auto Museum had the tribute to Low Riders. The paint work and mechanical work on those cars draws me to them. I have to say that the paint jobs were second to none on any car or truck I have ever seen. They even had a '58 Chevy that was fully engraved. I appreciate most forms of automobile customization with the exception of the cars I call the Cartoon cars. Usually a Chevrolet with something like 28" wheels and tires on them.

I don’t like certain areas or styles of custom built vehicles.

But I never underestimate the work that goes into them.

Would I want a true custom Lowrider??

Absolutely not.

Do I admire the craft, paint, creativity, detail etc that goes into this style….??

ABSOLUTELY.

So I just want to try capturing even just 5% of that magic here.

If I can get that done…… Success.

Wild Pony Express request.

Good morning.

UK obviously.

I am interested in buying a set of four aluminium wheels from a seller in North West London

But after my last cockup of getting to the seller of some wheels, only to be told the wheels had been “stolen” I am loathe to do the whole ULEZ/Dartford toll/140 miles trip to collect some wheels.

So I guess the question is, whether anyone else works/travels in NW London but comes to Kent regularly, who could pay for and collect the wheels and bring them back this way.

Always worth asking.

Raining on and on.

So not a lot going on.

Yesterday I was chatting with a very frustrated friend. Her mum unfortunately is a ways down the dementia road, also a cancer survivor. To the extent of them now having to make her world safe around her. Julie is 68, so you get the idea.
She was looking for a way to get the medication safe in the house as her dad cannot control everything that happens.

She was online looking for lockable boxes or cabinets. So I told her I had quite a few boxes in the garage. From tool lockers to key cabinets.

After deciding on one, I went and cleaned, sanded and painted it for her. Added a really cheap Chinese lock (just to keep mum out) and some trim stripping and pink vinyl.

Saturday morning I am heading to Colchester, Essex to meet up with PaulY to deliver his box of steel and brass I collected last week, and then meeting Julie for some lunch and a chat with her black box.

Painting in the garage with a temperature of 5’C and rain outside, my bargain Dewalt heat gun (remember that bargain buy?) was perfect for warming the box up after sanding the surface to key it well, and wiping it clean.

So between coats I gently applied more dry heat.

Result is very satisfying.

But I need to do more careful and DIY stuff,,without the weather getting in the way.

Weekend soon.

.

This could happen anywhere.

Just been to The Range and bought some Iceland “Party Foods” and chicken at Dockside.
This is the second time I’ve had to object to the price charged.
£18.00 in food but charged £20.50
Staff not happy with me objecting and having to change prices on the till.
The person who did it said to me they work for The Range and not Iceland.

So I don’t care who works for who.

Just be aware that their systems are charging you too much.

If you just automatically swipe a card and leave without checking, you could be charged more than you should.

I hope this is helpful until the owners correct their system and pricing.

This reminds me of just about every business over here asking if you want to donate your change (or round up) or just trying to not give you your change back. No, I don't want to donate my change. I give to several charities every month. Yes, I want my change back. How do I know that they will actually donate it to charity instead of just pocketing it

Here in the US, most businesses specify where your rounding up contributions are directed so you can make an informed decision.
A reputable Childrens Hospital? Sure.
Some sketchy sounding charity feeding autistic harelipped double amputee vegan orphans from broken homes in some war-torn third world hellhole? No, thanks, I will pass on that one.
YMMV.

:+1: 💯

Around here, it is pretty much donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital which is a very wonderful organization. So the answer is always YES!

I rarely donate my change or round up. I know it's not every case but some businesses make those donations in their own name and some even claim tax credit for the donations. I prefer to make my own donation which is never claimed on my taxes. Somehow giving with one hand and taking (some) back with the other doesn't seem right to me.

I to have become cynical about the donations. I walk into Paner to be greeted by a sign, *** donated 16 bazillion dollars to charity. So my question-did you take a tax writeoff for all of those rounding up dollars or did you just overcharge customer so you could brag about your donations....

RANT Over.

First things first! This forum is now officially a tax forum and not a Garage forum :) !

Now, both of you bring up a very good intriguing and valid concern. Below are some interesting information in this regard from respectable sources.

The upshot is that if a company did keep the donations or if they claim these donations as their own donations for tax purposes, they will be committing fraud. Not to mention the damage to the reputation and brand that this can cause if they are caught. After all, supposedly the reason businesses have such a programs is to create good will for their business.

Now do some companies in general cheat and break the law, who knows but it is unlikely big and respectable brand name business will risk tangling with IRS and committing fraud for some marginal gain.

No, businesses that collect charity donations from rounding up customer charges
do not claim these donations as their own for tax purposes.
Legally, these businesses act only as a collecting agent (or middleman) for the charity. The money collected does not count as business income, nor does it count as a business expense.
Here is the breakdown of how these donations are handled:
  • Tax Treatment for the Business: Because the company never technically "owns" the donated money, they cannot include it in their income and then write it off as a donation. It is treated similarly to sales tax, which is collected and passed on, not claimed as revenue or deduction.
  • Tax Treatment for the Customer: The customer who makes the donation is the one legally entitled to claim the tax deduction, as the donation appears on their receipt. However, because most people take the standard deduction rather than itemizing, they rarely claim these small amounts.
  • Exceptions (When Businesses Do Get a Tax Break): If a business makes a promise to donate a portion of its own revenue (not just rounding up customer totals), or if the company matches customer donations, those specific amounts can be deducted by the business.
Why do they do it?
While not used for tax deductions, these programs provide businesses with significant goodwill, positive PR, and, in some cases, the ability to claim they helped raise millions for a cause.

If nothing else, it is just to show that these shops will repeatedly do the same thing.

They do NOT FIX THESE THINGS

I had exactly the same overcharging two weeks ago, same items

So if nobody complained, they will have literally sold boxes of party food at inflated prices and pocketed the change……..

I think of it this way……..

If someone pick pockets me and I catch him/her I will beat the **** out of them, within reason and threat to my own life because they operate in gangs.

If I got to find out later, I would feel violated.

These businesses are literally sticking their fingers in your wallet and helping themselves to your money.

WITH IMPUNITY.

JUST BE ALERT.

@gman007 So noted.

Moving on Rian seems like you might be feeling better, hope so.

100 times better.

But it leaves residual symptoms.

Just come in from the front driveway.

About to try edit a very short, messy Oldsmobile video.

Having a main road literally 3 meters from my front driveway and parking means a lot of road traffic noise.

Nicely done too!

Thanks

Mate Bryan did a few more pics on this ChatGPT thing of some of my previous cars.

I am not clever enough to do these things.

Being a Hotwheels fan for a long time these made me chuckle and go back to being a 7 year old again.

Fake Police Cruiser centre caps made

Glooped onto the rims.

Masking tape to keep them in place for 24 hours till hardened.
Then remove the tape, take a few pics.
Go food shopping in town, inspect to see if we lost any.
Nope.
All there.

Short Video.

Well, I just have to ask. Since you glued on those fake hubcaps, do you have to carry an air compressor and pneumatic chisel with you to remove them to change a tire when you get a flat?

Jeff……

I actually had to ask my brother the same question. He is a 41.5 year military veteran, Engineering Corps. Forward planning is his middle name 😉

How many flats do you have per week, month, year ??

Been well over four years since I had one.

I have a spare

I have tools

I can remove the cap

I have more glue.

I just don’t worry about

Make sense?

I am a long time follower and admirer of your projects. Absolutely no negativity intended. I just though the image of carrying an air compressor and chisel to change a tire might be amusing to some. Keep up the good work.

Obstacles are just challenges for solutions.

Thank you.

And my response is certainly not to alienate. I have a different vocabulary for that 😉

A very different pair of pics.

I requested a lowrider inspired blue paint scheme.

Bryan the painter and artist but together the cop car.

The police cruiser look just suits this instantly.
