I am working on restoring my father-in-laws Craftsmen drill press 103.23120. Unfortunately I dropped and broke the pulley for the motor and I have not been able to find a replacement. It is a 4 step pulley with appear to be 5, 4, 3, and 2 inch pulleys. Can anyone point me toward where I can find a replacement?

I have searched through other threads and I have seen a couple of other drill presses but they are not the same as mine even though they indicate they are also 103.23130. Mine is the benchtop version and the model number is stamped on the base. Mine only has two pulleys - one on the motor and one in the head. I see pictures of others that have 3-4 pulleys. that is not what I have.

Also can someone tell me what size belt I need to purchase?
And also point me to where I can find an owners manual?

Thank you.

Your drill press is a 13-1/2" Craftsman 80 with feed handle rod with two red knobs. It may have a hex-key chuck.

The smallest step on an oe pulley is ~1.75" and the largest step is 5". The profile height is ~1-1/8".

An off-the-shelf four-step pulley has 2", 3", 4" and 5" steps and is ~2-1/2" tall.

Please post a photo of your broken pulley. All may not be lost.

An AX39 belt will work very well.

The manuals for the 103.23640 and 23641 are virtually identical to your 23120.

Is it a 103.23120 or 103.23130? Why don't you post a photo?
By the name plate it is definitely a 103.23130. Here are pictures.

I don't know where to measure to and from, but mine is bigger than 13 1/2. It also has three feed handles and they are/were a dark, reddish brown but mostly brown. I only have two knobs now, the other was lost long ago. I do have a chuck key. See the pic's in the other post.

Thank you.

My pulley profile height appears to be ~ 2 1/8 inches rather than 1 1/8. Did you mean 2 1/8?

Ok, that helps.

With the correct model number, that is a 15-1/2" Craftsman 100. Your original post was 103.23120. That IS a 13-1/2" drill press.

With the belt on the largest step of the motor pulley, the spindle is spinning at ~5000 rpm. That is really fast and not necessary for most drilling operations. You will likely never need that speed. I would just cut off that large step, smooth it out and use it.

I incorrectly stated 103.23120. It is 103.23130 instead.

"cut if off"... sounds simple but could you help me out a little more? Cut it with what and cut it where? Are you implying that if I don't cut it off it will vibrate?

so yes, you and I have the same machine. My motor is D4 48 so I guess 4th week of April 1948. My father in law said he thought he had bought it in 1948. Sears and Roebuck catalog! And I did the exact same stupid thing dropping the motor and mount together. So frustrating. The machine lasted this lo?ng in good condition until it met me.

You never found a motor pulley?

In the threads you attached, I saw two part numbers for the motor pulley - 10826 and 10862. Do you know which is correct?

Thank you

Aren't these readily available on eBay? The motor pulleys were never hard to come by and from recollection were the cheapest of them all when I was sourcing spares or replacement parts. If I had two I'd ship you one, but I think I'm down to my last spare. Will check though.

It depends on what resources you have. My shop is fairly basic, so I would:
  • mount the pulley on a piece of 1/2" rod
  • clamp the rod in a vise
  • cut the top half of the large step in the belt groove with a hack saw
  • start smoothing the rough cut with a file.
  • mount the pulley on the motor
  • CAREFULLY run the motor and CAREFULLY finish the cut with a file and sandpaper.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We've all been there in one form or another.

Not sure. Here's a link to all available manuals. Part numbers will be there.

Those show up occasionally on ebay. When they do, they are often pricey. In addition, sellers often don't know what they're selling and often have the wrong descriptions. There's only one correct pulley at the moment. A pulley with a 5/8" bore will work with a bushing.
