Been browsing flea markets. Occasionally run into folks that have old snap on ratchets, maybe 30-40 teeth on them. I mostly see 1/2in drive. Still smooth, obviously strong, sometimes with some noticeable wear. how much are these worth paying for these days?

All the dual80 talk makes it seem like these are antiques.

It depends on the model. prices start at about 10.00 but some would go for 200+

I think there worth picking up,but many are only generally worth in the 20-40 dollar range resale value. That's what a guy on this forum was selling them for a while back if I remember correctly to guys who knew what they were buying.

I love them, they're not worth that much though, and the only one I have is so much of an antique to me that I'm afraid to use it for everyday jobs.

As laong as they have a round handle. I can't stand the flat handle ratchets. I don't mine ratchets with 30 teeth. They work well on 99% of jobs

I pick them up when I see them, never be afraid to use them. They were made to be used everyday rain or shine 24/7.

What is the worse thing that could happen? If they fail pick up a new kit, lets face it snap-on is a wonderful company and if they can not find the parts for it , they will give you a replacement so that that you can enjoy it 24/7 for many more years to come.

So yes there is still love for those old ratchets...:)

Since I've got sets of old Snap-on ratchets which have functioned reliably, some of them for more than fifty years, I guess I'll never need to buy a Dual 80.

If I were a young tech or weekend warrior starting out and had the choice of a good used older Snap-on for $10-20, versus $90-150 for one new Dual 80, I'd buy ten different older models. Should be easy to do now that those who have to own the latest and greatest are selling their old rats so cheaply.

The dual 80 has been the best thing. Everybody buys them and trade off the old 36 tooth modles. I have bought so many for dirt cheap from the SO guy. I have three dual 80s, two that were from warranting older modles. I like the older ratches better. I keep breaking the 1/2" drive dual 80.

When there's almost new F80's around for about $50, the $20ish for a well used older F720 isn't out of line (maybe even a tad high), and it's still more than other brands sometimes bring.

I picked up an older black hard handle ratchet off ebay not too long ago for $20. I love it, easily my favorite ratchet. For what its worth, I don't own any "new" or fine tooth ratchets...at least not yet!

Don't trade them in to the Snap-On guy; sell them on ebay... all Snap-On ratchets do well on there (aside from FV series stuff)! I've asked about trade ins on ratchets... was so little it was a insult, IMHO... 700-900 series ratchets are still in demand on ebay; especially special discontinued types (hard handle, speeder, radius head etc)!

I have owned most of those rare Snap-on items at one time or another in my life save for the double ratchet which strikes me as a weld job someone made up. Those really early 7/8" and 5/8" drive ratchets were not all that good as you had to change the center to change the direction so only really good for looking and not for using.

When I wanted to sell all of that old SO stuff I had in the early 90's it was all I could do to get $200.00 for the lot of them as no one wanted those old tools back then. Now apparently it would be worth a fortune.

The 24" non flex head ratchet is so cool; I wish they still sold these! I wonder why they stopped making them?

You could get an SLX80, like I have and lock the head in a fixed position, that should be the best of both worlds.

Now that look at the picture of the double female ratchet it does seem to taper down towards the middle-- Yes it could be a welding and grind/polish of a 1/2" and a 3/8" ratchet. There are some subtle telltale irregularities in the welded area, (if in fact it was not a factory model).

Another alternative would be a SO factory custom job for a particular industry or the military.

The double rat is a Ford Factory wrench, not sure who put the two rats together, the snap on factory or the Ford Factory, but it was done in a way where you cannot see the joints, very nice. The two square openings are different sizes. I would think it was Snap on that made it, why else would the model numbers be ground off.

This is an interesting old thread. I've decided I like 936 ratchets, and I love the look of 830s but I don't have any yet. It is amazing what these go for on eBay - definitely no $10 ratchets to be found there.

All of that being said, I picked ip a like-new T936 about a year ago and it has become my favorite ratchet. I use the F80s all day, but there is something cool about the previous design.

Those 936 ratchets are great. I work in industrial maintenance. I use a FLF 936 a lot! I wish I hand a soft handle for it, but I don’t know if they came with a soft handle.

I have a few old Snap-on ratchets, that I bought at estate sales for a dollar or two, but I don’t really use them.

I have so many modern ratchets that I don’t need to use them. They just keep my garage from floating into space.

I bought them, cleaned them, greased them… and never touched them again.

I do industrial electrical most of the time. Lower tooth count ratchets are fine for 99% of the time. An 36t SK ratchet, made before I was born, is adequate for almost everything I do.

For a while, I had a dual pawl Wright ratchet. One day, I added up how much the contractors insure our tools for… and changed out a lot of tools for lower dollar equivalents.

I have a FH936 that I bought NOS years ago and never used. Now I am working some days at a remote location and really like using it there.

I agree that tooth count isn’t as important to me. I was using a finer tooth Proto. After rebuilding it 4 times, I retired it and brought in the SO. It’s super smooth and extremely strong.

Most of my ratchets are the 36t, I have a few 80t but find they feel a little less balanced .
the larger head is ok for long handle but feels heavier and less balanced compared to my old ratchets.
